Coming to Jakarta Sea-Games? Watch Out for FBR Sharks!


It’s not every day I salute words of wisdom from the Muhammadiyah, one of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organisations, but this weekend, I must.
 
Their former chairman, Syafii Ma’arif, has urged the authorities to think again over an invite to one of the capital’s most notorious thug gangs to ‘help’ with security at an international event to be held later this year, and Pak Syafii has asked why?
They are rated as ‘preman,’ street-thugs, he sensibly stated on Friday, and nobody who knows Jakarta is likely to disagree. So how come they are going to be involved in a prestige event like the Sea Games?

Some of my fellow-rightwingers were surprised that I’d rush to the aid of Greenpeace, but whatever we think of them, they are entitled to their views and to express them. The FBR, on the other hand, have for years been up to their hypocritical necks in thuggery, and in most sensible countries would be outlawed, but not here.

And to add insult to injury, my journey to Mangga Dua was delayed for some time today because a huge crowd of said FBR were gathered for their 10th aniversary rally at Senayan. And guess who was their guest of honour?
Yup, Fauzi Bowo, Governor of Jakarta!
Not content with taking tea with the islamonazis of the FPI last year, he has now added these anti-socials to the mutual fan club .

Militants from the extreme Front Betawi Rempug (FBR) and other groups physically attacked nightspots in the name of religion, claiming that the establishments were immoral. Police did not take adequate action against such militants or against those who extorted money from shopkeepers ostensibly to celebrate religious holidays. The Government failed to hold accountable some religious extremists, including many Laskar Jihad militiamen, who had committed religion-inspired crimes in previous years.
 
Jakarta Post 30/4/06  Pluralism rally provokes ‘intimidation’  A week after a rally by cultural communities and artists to protest against the anti-pornography bill, activists and artists involved in the demonstration said they were being subjected to various forms of “intimidation”.   On Saturday, about 150 people claiming to be members of the Betawi Brotherhood Forum (FBR) arrived at the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ) in the Taman Ismail Marzuki cultural center in Cikini, and demanded playwright Ratna Sarumpaet apologize for organizing the demonstration.  

JP  June 2006  Former first lady Sinta Nuriyah Wahid reported the chairman of the Betawi Brotherhood Forum (FBR), Fadloli El Muhir, to Jakarta Police last Monday for allegedly slandering activists who took part in a rally against the pornography bill.  Fadloli said during last week’s live broadcast on Metro TV that the women who participated in the rally were “evil, wretched women who did not have good morals”. The FBR also threatened singer Inul Daratista, telling her to leave the capital, and raided her karaoke lounge in North Jakarta after she appeared in a rally against the bill.

Here’s a report from the Jakarta Post, 26 June 2006.
Bekasi Police apprehended 260 people suspected of criminal activities in a series of raids over the weekend. Among those arrested were three teenagers under the age of 17 and members of the Betawi Brotherhood Forum (FBR). Police also confiscated sharp weapons and 21 small packages of marijuana. Bekasi Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Chairul Anwar said the raids were carried out at locations prone to petty crime, including industrial estates, housing complexes, bus terminals and shopping malls. “”Those who are arrested will be questioned and if we find cases against them, we will prosecute them,”" he said.Six people, FBR members, were caught with dozens of parking tickets issued by the group. “”They illegally run a parking service and this is against the law,”" Chairul said.

Opposing gangs clash at Lebak Bulus terminal

A clash broke out on Tuesday between two gangs with conflicting interests in Lebak Bulus Bus Terminal in South Jakarta, police say.

The gangs were Kembang Latar and Front Betawi Rempug (FBR), South Jakarta Police chief detective Adj. Sr. Comr. Budi Irawan said Tuesday, adding that the clash was believed to have been a result of the groups competing interests income gained from bus passengers.“There was a misunderstanding [between the groups] but the situation is now under control,” Budi said.He added that there no injuries had been reported following the clash.
“No one was injured or arrested. The [clash] ended as soon as our officers arrived,” he said.

detik.com 4/4/11 FBR clashed with another gang at Pulo Gadung terminal  Sejumlah orang dari Front Betawi Rempug (FBR) terlibat bentrok di Terminal Pulogadung, Jakarta Timur. Tidak ada korban jiwa dalam peristiwa itu. “Iya, ini ada FBR sama preman bentrok. Kita lagi meredam di TKP,” kata Kapolsek Pulogadung Kompol Dani Hamdani ketika dikonfirmasi detikcom, Senin (4/4/2011) malam.Dani mengatakan, bentrokan terjadi sekitar pukul 20.00 WIB. Hingga kini, ratusan aparat polisi berjaga-jaga di lokasi.

“Tidak ada korban jiwa atau kerusakan,” kata Dani. Belum diketahui apa penyebab bentrokan tersebut. Hingga kini, situasi masih mencekam di sekitar lokasi tersebut.

VIVAnews – Tiga puluh dua orang ditetapkan sebagai tersangka oleh kepolisian dalam kasus bentrok massal antara anggota Forum Betawi Rempug (FBR) dan warga Rempoa, Tangerang Selatan.

“Sebanyak 23 orang ditahan, tujuh wajib lapor,” kata Komisaris, Nurdi Satriaji, kepala Satuan Reserse Kriminal Polres Jakarta Selatan, di acara Pelatihan Perubahan Mindset Melalui Implementasi Strategi Polmas Dalam Konteks Rencana Aksi Nasional HAM di Hotel Grand Kemang, Jakarta Selatan, Senin, 2 Agustus 2010.

Namun, Nurdi tidak merinci siapa saja dan dari pihak mana para tersangka itu. Yang jelas, kata dia, mereka ditangkap di lokasi bentrokan massal dan terbukti membawa senjata tajam, merusak pos organisasi masyarakat di Tanah Kusir, dan membakar kendaraan.

Bentrokan hebat antara anggota FBR dan warga Rempoa di Jalan Raya Rempoa berlangsung Sabtu, 31 Juli 2010 malam hingga Minggu, 1 Agustus 2010 dini hari.

“FBR as one of the Betawi organizations, is expected to be united to secure the implementation of the Jakarta SEA Games,” said Fauzi  Bowo, Governor of Jakarta, during the 10th anniversary FBR in Senayan, Central Jakarta, Saturday.

In an event attended by more than 10 thousand members of the FBR, Fauzi also urged the FBR to preserve Betawi culture. “Because culture is a reflection of our attitude to be enjoyed by children and grandchildren later,” he pleaded.
