EUObserver relates that the elitists in Brussels are to issue yet another diktat, BANNING menthol cigarettes across the Continent, early next year.

These know-all nabobs probably want to ban alcohol too, but it’s hard not to conclude that they’re drunk with power.

BRUSSELS – All cigarette packs in the EU from 2015 onward will be plastered with images of diseased body parts, menthol, vanilla and slim cigarettes will be banned, while snus – a type of mouth tobacco – will not be sold outside Sweden, under European Commission proposals out on Wednesday.

I do like menthol cigarettes, which are less harsh, in my opinion, on the throat, but I suppose that’s why the clods are out to ban it, The idea presumably is to corral everyone into smoking harsher and harsher brands, so we all get sick of it and chuck it.

Sorry, Commissars, but some of us will not go quietly into the night of the state dictating what we like and what we don’t.

True or not, I was pleased when he made it past the Scylla and Charybdis of the whiney pink NGOs and the dorks known as MEPs. Now, alas, it seems he has ‘gone native’ or else his sound sense was a myth all along.

He added the law is aimed at preventing young people from getting into the habit.A former smoker himself, he said: “It’s not because we treat people as if they were stupid, but we want to help EU citizens come to the right decision … Smokers should not be treated like the lepers of modern times, but at the same time we should protect citizens who do not want to smoke.”

How many non-sequiturs can he cram into one sentence, or two? If people aren’t stupid, let them make their own choices. If they’re not be pariahs, stop persecuting them!

What the heck is balanced about depriving people of  choice. if they REALLY think they’re dealing with a dangerous drug like heroin, ban it. They know they’re not, and they are left-libs, so they won’t behave in either a consistent or a democratic way.

But the centre-left S&D faction said it should force cigarettes to be sold in plain packs with the brand indicated only by a line of text, as in Australia.
