When I was teaching here in Jakarta, I opined once on another blog that corporal punishment in schools was no bad thing. That was a clear reference to its abolition in the UK, and the rising tide of anti-social behaviour which ensued and continues to this day.

Most people here are well aware that language teachers, especially foreign ones, may not impose any such punishment – or any real punishment at all – but what happened next?

Some imbecilic parent commented that if I DARED lay a finger on his spoilt brat, he’d show up and set about me!

One can imagine how his kid will turn out, just as obnoxious as his parent. And BTW, it was not an Indonesian parent, but one of those embarrassing expats who arrive in Jakarta and proceed to bring their homelands into disrepute.

Anyway, the NY case concerns Jeff Daniels, whose wife heard noises coming from her Dad’s home next door. Jeff went to investigate and found four vile little cretins using hammers to destroy the house.

He estimates the children did $50,000 worth of damage.

“So I grab the one hammer and the other three [boys] got hammers, now I don’t know what to do here, I said you guys put that stuff down, what are you doing? Now they’re startled because now they’re caught,” Daniels said. “I was fortunate that they were in that room that had a closet, so I put them in the closet. I said listen you guys are staying here until the police come, period.”

Clyde Village Police duly arrived, but instead of removing the mini-louts, they kindly escorted them home to mummy and daddy. Charges were however filed, second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief.

But what next?

On Monday police returned to Daniels’ home to arrest him on four counts of child endangerment. Children of the parents pressured authorities to make the arrest, claiming Daniels grabbed one child by the neck and threatened others with the hammer.

Jeff would be perfectly entitled to give the little beasts a sound thrashing, you’d think, but instead he’s facing  up to a year in jail on each charge.

The cops should have arrested those parents and taken the brats into care – clearly such adults are unfit to raise chidren – the proof is there under their roofs.
