Syria Unfit to Serve on Human Rights Bodies? Yes, and WHO ELSE?

Canada pushing to have Syria removed from UN human rights committee .

PostMedia News is now reporting that Canada, the U.S., the U.K, Qatar and other countries, have penned a letter to UNESCO’s executive board asking them to reverse their decision. “Syria participates in the examination of cases involving alleged human-rights violations,” the letter notes. “In view of the current situation in Syria, the Executive Board must review the participation of Syria.”

Well, it’s understandable that Canada, and many another observer, might think Syria is hardly qualified to sit on any body purporting to be in favour of human rights.

But we thought we’d check on which other countries are in that position at the UN. Here’s a list of their current champions on the  UN Human Rights Council – not UNESCO, but even more relevant to the point Canada’s making..

Let’s see, find countries beginning with C….and I don’t want to hear about Cameroon. Only this week, reports coming in of more Chinese misrule in poor colonised Tibet. And Beijing has never given its subjects, Tibetan or even the Chinese people themselves, a sniff at basic political liberties.

Nor has Cuba, with its vile record of oppression.

C’mon, Canada, Castro has murdered far more innocents than Assad. And Red China’s story is written in blood-red.
