Another Sick Joke – Shariah Sudan Joins UN Rights Panel

Sometimes these Sun News links work on RRA, sometimes not.

It doesn’t really matter, because I can tell you what it’s all about.

This month, in what can only be described as a sick joke – but not that funny really, because it’s very sad – the UN’s  Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) the panel that oversees human rights and the plight of women, got a brand new member.

We learned about it in school, the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, a condominium that was kept in order by British rule, mostly, and we read Kipling’s poem, givng the Brit Tommies’ opinion,’ Here’s to you, fuzzy-wuzzy, ‘in your ‘ome in the Sudan – you’re a poor benighted ‘eathen, but a first-class fighting man.’

These days, I can’t really say a lot about their military qualities, but the benighted part still applies, for sure.

As Canada put it, “It is truly unfortunate the United Nations has chosen one of the world’s worst offenders of human rights assume a post on ECOSOC.”

“This development not only undermines the efforts of those member states that commit to uphold the United Nations’ fundamental principles but also the UN institutions themselves. Despite this development, we pledge our unwavering commitment to combat human rights abuses in countries like Sudan.”

Shariah law anywhere is of course inimical to human rights, by any normal person’s definition, but Sudan’s regime is so foul that the United Nation’s own International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an international arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in 2009 for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity and genocide, targeting blacks in the Darfur region.

The BBC had a report as long ago as 2010, reminding us why decent people should loathe shariah, with Bashir defending his barbaric police minions who had a woman flogged publicly.

“If she is lashed according to Sharia law, there is no investigation. Why are some people ashamed? This is Sharia.” President Omar al-Bashir (file photo) Mr Bashir also defended a recent public flogging of a woman by police

Quite right, Bashir, and at least you’re honest about the savagery of your chosen code.

He was speaking in an interview on the likely secession of the less primitive part of his country, which of course came to pass, with South Sudan now an independent state. Mr Bashir said the constitution would then be changed, making Islam the only religion, Sharia the only law and Arabic the only official language.

That statement in itself should have disqualified Sudan from any place on any body concerned with people’s rights.

Undoubtedly, it’s time civilised nations quit the UN.

Metternich called the Holy Alliance a loud-sounding nothing. The United Nations too is loud, but its evil infuence amounts to a lot more than nothing, and will continue to do so, as long as Western governments dignify it by their presence.
