Selamat Jalan, Paul P…
It would not be right to omit the sad news of the death of a weel-kent Jakarta personality, Paul Patten, of whose passing I learned on Friday.
Paul was not a big buddy of mine, but was somebody who always had time for a friendly chat. He and his two brothers, Darryl, who passed away last year, and John, all true Englishmen, distinguished themselves in the field of bar management here.

Their various interests involved such celebrated watering-holes as D’s Place, the Highway to Elle, and P’s Place, which latter became Absolut, still a popular Jalan Jaksa bar, though the name has changed.

I don’t have a photo of the man himself, but since most of our conversations took place in the Highway, here’s a picture of the staff from some time ago, which I’m sure he would have liked, as we both enjoyed chatting to the gals.
=============================
He will be missed by many, and my condolences to John, whom I know, and other family members whom I don’t.

Paul will be missed. There is apparently a wake to be held for him at D’s Place, Blok M, on Wednesday evening, Feb. 6th.

You are incredibly well-informed, vojo. And your comments come through more quickly than those from locals, which have been taking up to 24 hours to reach me,
However, I installed my new Kapersky anti-virus disc last night, so whatever’s been delaying them, it may be a problem no more.
I omly heard from Jakarta dwellers about the wake this past noontide. I wish I had more time to organise my attendance, but alas, it seems impossible.

I wish I could make it as well. That’s a nice and fitting place for his wake, and a good way to do it.

In the end, vojo, I did attend, fearsome rain having caused disruption to previous plans. A good turn-out, some nice speeches…another era ends.

I’m glad you could attend, Ross, in spite of or in this case because of the torrential rains and floods. Paul deserved a good final send-off like that. Too bad his brother John couldn’t be there.
