Aceh’s Mad Mullah – ‘Dancing is EVIL – It Involves Body Movements!’

Right, readers, back to the most pig-ignorant province in the Indonesian archipelago, which perhaps perceptively likes to style itself The Verandah of Mecca!

Yep, it’s ACEH!

And a Dark Age dork named Muhammad Thaib, Regent of North Aceh has  banned all adult women from dancing when welcoming guests in North Aceh, adding that only children should perform the tradition.  “… cultural preservation should not damage Islamic Shariah values, such as dancing performed by adult women.”

  • thaib Muhammad Thaib
  • And of course shariah is not sexist, not discriminatory and not unfair to women. Just a reminder!

Needless to say, the fool isn’t talking about the sort of dancers you can see in Jakarta’s Blok M bars most nights of the week – he’d be off to the local quarry to collect stones if he encountered anything as much fun as them.

No, Muhammad is concerned about traditional, fully-dressed, Acehnese dancing, and he’s likely going to be on the receiving end of a storm of criticism from normal Indonesians of all creeds, including Masruchah, deputy chair of the National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) who quite rightly notes that  Thaib violated the rights of women to express themselves in an art such as dancing.

This fine lady reminds the Acehnese bigots that Indonesia’s constitution guarantees all citizens the right to express themselves, including in dancing,” Masruchah said. “Dancing is apart of Indonesian culture to show people the local tradition. It should not be linked to someone’s opinion about Islam. Islam indeed supports art and the right to express.”

But let it not be said that Muhammed is without support.

The North Aceh Ulema Consultative Assembly (MPU) supported Thaib’s ban, calling the move a positive innovation. Mustafa Ahmad, head of the MPU, said that Aceh’s traditional dances, including the Saman dance, were evil because it involved body movement, as quoted by

Ulema, believe it or not, translates as ‘scholars!’

Masruchah fires back – “The interpretation to body movements, whether done by children or adults, lies in the heads of men. Why should women be blamed if men easily get aroused?”

Needless to say the Home Affairs Ministry, run by a fanatical Islamist who in a previous local government role imposed draconian shariah oppression on women –– is not rushing to intervene against this latest lunacy.

Home Affairs Ministry spokesman Reydonnyzar Moenek told the Jakarta Globe on Saturday that he had not heard about the ban and would seek information on whether the ban was already written in a regulation before making a comment.
