‘Jeddah’s Hot, Let’s Start Late Today,’ As TKIs Faint Outside!

So the Indonesian Government Minister, Djoko Suyanto, has been denying claims that poor service was behind Sunday’s riot. http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/news/indonesia-blames-rumors-for-saudi-arabia-migrant-worker-riot/?

Yet what do we read in the very same sentence of the Jakarta Globe’s report on the huge riot in Saudi, when thousands of Indonesian migrant workers hurled rocks at their own diplomatic outpost?

The heat on Sunday threatened to break 45 degrees Celsius, he said, prompting the consulate office to wait two hours for cooler weather before opening its doors.

If it’s anything like the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore, it will be furnished splendidly and equipped with air-conditioning, neither of which would likely have been available on the street outside. God forbid anyone suggest that poor service was to blame!

I mean to say, is it reasonable to expect consular staff to work their proper hours if the temperature rises?

Obviously, they would not expect to be paid for the time they sat on their uniformed butts indoors while mere workers were collapsing on the road visible from their finely curtained windows.

By the time the office opened, hundreds had fainted in the afternoon heat. An ensuing stampede left 57-year-old Marwah Binti Hasan dead and a security guard injured. The crowd then broke out into a riot, setting fires and hurling stones at the consulate. The chaos was recorded and posted to YouTube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TgvWiowLbY

Oh, and President SBY’s take on his overseas representatives?

Presidential spokesman for foreign affairs, Teuku Faizasyah, blamed the workers, whom he said had refused to queue in an orderly manner and instead made provocative gestures to consulate staff. http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2013/06/11/indonesian-image-sinks-jeddah-riot.html

BAD workers!
