Priceless! A Book That Costs EIGHTY QUID?

I spent some of yesterday out front, reading book reviews, a pleasant form of relaxation after several days of serious partying, which I fear may resume tonight.

But  at one point I came across a piece of information which reminded me of a poem I had to learn by heart in high school.

It was about Abou Ben Adhem, may his tribe increase, who awoke one night from a deep dream of peace…

Abou was surprised to see an angel, writing in a book of gold…

……………..

It’s a good poem, and here’s the link if you like poetry  http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/abou-ben-adhem/  but it was those three words,  book of gold, that came back to me today, when I noticed the price of one of the books the reviews of which I was enjoying.

british money

EIGHTY POUNDS STERLING!

0000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Good grief!!! Who on earth can afford to pay that sort of price for a book, hard-back or not, no matter how readable?

  • Blok M Square's Carrefour Blok M Square
  • ……………………………………………………..
  • I pick up second-hand paper-backs at Ning’s little store on Jalan Jaksa, usually paying between Rp.25 – 50,000.  Blok M Square mall’s basement has similar deals for hard-backs, a little bit dearer, but okay.

Five to ten bucks ain’t bad.

Periplus at PIM in South Jakarta often has very good discounts too.

I also have one of those Kindles, which can have books delivered electronically, and the prices paid seem reasonable.

But I fear it will be a very long time before I can save up enough to purchase…

militancy in shiism.

…no matter how gripping it may be!
