A SYDNEY man allegedly took his nine-month-old daughter overseas and had her “circumcised,” refuelling debate about the underground practice.

Police from the NSW Child Abuse Squad were told the man organised for his daughter to undergo the procedure while on holidays in February 2012 and a doctor in Australia noticed the genital mutilation during a routine visit six months later.

Now the alleged perpetrator of this atrocity has been arrested. If found guilty, he should be deported. Child abuse is a serious offence, and he should never be allowed access to this poor kid again..,

But then the report gets interesting.

A senior Muslim community leader, who has tried to privately discourage genital mutilation, told The Australian under condition of anonymity that it was barbaric. “This is not a practice strictly related to Islam at all, but something that emerges in small sections of the community all around the world,” he said.

Good for him!

There are many decent Muslims who share our disgust at FGM. Unfortunately, there are also backward, bigoted high-ups in Muslim communities who endorse it, not least here in Indonesia.

So, as I already said, good on that Muslim in Oz, and the countless number of similarly responsible Muslim parents here in Indonesia who would not have their daughters’ private parts slashed in any sectarian ritual.

And I think that Aussie Muslim understands that – why else is he unwilling to give his name, if not for fear of savages who might come heresy hunting?
