Post-Sarinah – Jokowi Faces Fanatic Challenge in Bangka

The post-Sarinah assertions that Indonesia is a beacon of tolerance unbowed by Islamist evil is about to be put to the test.

  • The bigots who run Bangka Regency, in Bangka Belitung province, are echoing ISIS’s eagerness to drive out a peaceful religious minority, the Ahmadis, simply because of how they worship God Almighty.
  • No official backing for violence, of course, but the intensity of the in-crowd’s intolerance is shocking.
  • And, as the innocent Ahmadis are apparently to be given a choice, turn apostate or face eviction, what happens to those who take a principled stand?

Now the ball is in President Jokowi’s court.

He can sit back and let it happen, or he can uphold the Ahmadis’ constitutional right to religious liberty. The Ahmadiyah population is tiny up there, and in any case they are a completely inoffensive group.

But still the haters want them gone.

  • “The government should protect the rights of citizens and promote dialogue among people, instead of getting involved in the conflict and making it worse,” Indonesian Ahmadiyah Congregation (JAI) spokesman Yendra Budiana said on Sunday.

The Ahmadi spokesman was referring to a letter urging Ahmadiyah followers in Srimenanti subdistrict, Sungailiat district, to convert to the mainstream Sunni teachings of the Indonesian Muslim majority or face expulsion from the regency.

Pemerintah Kabupaten melayangkan surat agar Jemaah Ahmadiyah di Bangka bertobat dan membubarkan diri, istimewa

The Bangka bigots’ letter

Underlining the malevolent fanaticism behind the message was its aggressive assertion that the JAI was forbidden from spreading its teachings in the regency. One expects this kind of backward bigotry from Hizbut Tahrir or the IslamoNazi FPI thug-gang.

But the Jakarta Post report reveals that those attending the Religious Community Harmony Forum (what an incongruous name!) whence the diktat emerged included not  only the infamously intolerant self-styled ‘scholars’of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI)…

….but also local representatives of two major organisations that like to parade themselves as ‘moderate.’

  • Will Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah disown their district minions if they’re behind such jihadist nonsense? But then Muhammadiyah’s leading light, Din Syamsuddin, is also an MUI king-pin.

But what’s arguably even worse is that the Bangka Police chief was also involved, not to protect and serve the latest targets of jihadist bullies, but to facilitate the persecution.

In the meeting, the Bangka police chief and the district chief all called for the expulsion of Ahmadiyah followers.

What is the National Police Chief going to do about his subordinate up there? Instant dismissal would be a good start, if the JP report is true.

These disgusting antics are just another aspect of former President SBY’s legacy.

And he it was, also, who rubber-stamped the iniquitous Tri-Ministerial Decree.

I could refer you to many previous posts on that vile edict, but the JP gives a brief summary of its content. It ordered the Ahmadiyah community to “stop spreading interpretations and activities that deviate from the principal teachings of Islam.”.

And who gets to say what’s deviant and what’s not?

The MUI, of course! They are rather odd ‘scholars,’ in that they tend to skulk behind collaborationist cops rather than risk being bested in theological argument.

The MUI – Belligerence Is Bad News!

Those who violate the decree can face up to five years in prison.

Islamist pig revels in the martyrdom of 3 Ahmadis at Cikeusik

———–

Following the decree, militant Islamists launched several violent attacks on Ahmadiyah followers including an attack in Cikeusik in February 2011 in which three Ahmadis were killed.

So.

Will Jokowi act?

Will the police replace their minion in Bangka?
