…here’s a dashed fine lady who lives and works somewhere in what has become my adopted home-town.

Some friends and I were out on the town last weekend, a merry foursome, each from a different country, alarming more sedate gallivanters with outbreaks of classic rock songs in a nice Jakarta resto, and, as happens, the talk turned to politics, and on that evening to Mr.Trump.

I made the point I’ve made here before, that his proposed blanket ban on Muslims entering the USA would prevent me taking some of those frequent visitors to my home along with me, if I ever decided to go see my American friends.

It would also, though her name didn’t come up on Saturday night, prevent Yenny Wahid from going there.

She’s director of theWahid Institute and exactly the sort of Muslim whose voice needs to be heard around the world.

This week she tried again to make it heard here, where it’s a badly needed antidote to the shrilling sectarianism which President Jokowi’s government says it deplores but which appears to be dictating an increasingly intolerant agenda.

Well, it would be hard to disagree with her on those ulema, ‘scholars,’ as they like to call themselves – their ‘scholarly’ outbursts are often remarkable. Islamist ‘Scholars’ – “Don’t Complain if You’re Attacked!” 

She allocated responsibility to each as follows, 21 cases to the MUI and 13 to the FPI.

Yenny accused the state-funded ‘scholars’ of often using their religious authority (they’re the agency that issues local fatwas) in ways that are ill-judged and without consideration of the impact on the community.

But what is really appalling about them is their frequent habit of calling on law enforcement to serve as a goon-squad against dissenters they are evidently reluctant to face in debate when their dogmas are challenged.

Again, nobody with an ounce of sense can gainsay her on that.

Yet Yenny makes an appeal which will almost certainly fall on deaf ears.
