The only consolation is that the military commander who brought these white-shirt sectarians into a military training programme has been stripped of his duties – although it’s not clear, and, sadly, unlikely, that he’s been kicked out of the army.

It is not, perhaps, irrelevant that this disgraceful activity occurred in Banten Province, which is only a few miles outside Jakarta – in fact if you have ever flown into Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, you’ll have landed in Banten yourself.

Banten Province was the scene of the vile Cikeusik Pogrom, five years ago, when a mob of ululating Islamist savages martyred three innocent members of the Ahmadi religious minority.

Today I took the trouble to check on the map and lo, Cikeusik is situated within the very same kebaputen, administrative area, Lebak, where the training reportedly took place.

I wonder if any of the vile beasts involved in the pogrom were among the trainees? 

Okay, that training has been stopped, although the Jakarta Post reports that a similar outrage occurred in another province, on the island of Madura.

However, one can see why Lieutenant Colonel Czi Ubaidillah, the officer responsible for including the gangster group in his training course, might have felt it permissible to do so.

After all, his Commander-in-Chief, President Jokowi, saw nothing wrong with sharing a platform with the FPI godfather, Habib Rizieq, barely a month ago, during a huge fanatic demo right here in Jakarta.

And Fadli Zon too was unashamed to appear with the FPI fanatics last year, so no surprise that he dismissed the concerns of many honourable Indonesians of all creeds about this shocking news.

…The politician from the Gerindra Party also criticized the military’s decision to strip Lebak military commander of his post for recruiting the FPI in Banten to take the training recently, calling the decision “regrettable”.

I have to wonder what all those Jakarta police officers will think about this, the cops who were injured in the FPI riot last year.

Will they welcome the prospect of such Islamist louts being trained to fight?

In the end, I don’t suppose any amount of training will transform the FPI into worthwhile warriors. They tend to avoid any fighting unless they’re mob-handed.

Food vendors, bar-staff and shop-keepers are their targets of choice – any defenceless folk, really, who are out-numbered.
