Jackboot! Woman Jailed For Complaint About Mosque Noise!


I live not that far from a mosque. It’s difficult not to be far from a mosque in Jakarta and one gets used to it. Some of them are not too noisy but I know a number of people who find the noise irksome.

They’ve been noisy tonight, because it’s cow- and goat-killing day tomorrow, the public holiday of Idul Adha.

But I guess the critics won’t dare do anything about the problem, after a lady named Meilana, in Medan, Sumatra, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after complaining that a mosque near her house was “too loud” and “hurt” her ears.

‘The 44-year-old, an ethnic Chinese Buddhist, was crying and taken out of the court in handcuffs after being found guilty of insulting Islam.’

Personally, I don’t insult Islam, though I condemn Islamists, who are a menace.

But I can see no earthly reason why people should be jailed for so-called ‘blasphemy, or saying what they think about any religion.

 If God Almighty feels affronted, He is more than capable of exacting redress all by Himself.

And since when is it insulting Islam to take exception to some ( often taped) bellowing voice?

We have touched on mosque-noise before, not only the victimisation of a Muslim man in Aceh…

…which of course is run by shariah fanatics…

…but also on the craven bureaucracy here in Jakarta that admits it won’t use noise abatement regulations against  mosques…

…even though Vice-President Kalla, himself a keen muslim, has acknowledged there’s a problem.

Meilana’s lawyer is quoted as saying that, rather than any kind of ‘blasphemy,’“this is only to fulfil the will of the people,” and he’s going to lodge an appeal.

But if such vicious sectarian persecution of a woman who has done nothing wrong really IS the will of the people, then Indonesia is finished as a free country.

It may be that some people won’t feel uncomfortable about that prospect at all. The extremist Islamic Community Forum, we read in the same report, has ranted that the sentence was too light.

But is this the Mind-Set Revolution that President Jokowi promised when he was elected?

When he runs for re-election next year, will he change his slogan to something like…

I have company coming round tomorrow and I don’t want to be taken down to the local cop-shop before my visitor arrives.
