Enjoy Your Ascension Day – But Never Forget Bekasi!
It’s Ascension Day and here in Indonesia it’s a public holiday – with lots of religions, we get lots of holidays!

But it’s important not to forget that, while Christians, Buddhists and Hindus are recognised religions here, and the decent Muslims among the majority creed respect their rights, there is also a viciously intolerant element, which showed its snarling ugly face a few years ago…

…and Islamist intolerance is not merely a past phenomenon, as the Hindus of Bekasi found out this month once again.
So no matter your religion, or even if you have none, pray that President Jokowi, now re-elected, to the fury of fanatics…
….will slap down the forces of darkness that prowl not only in Bekasi but throughout the archipelago.

I am Muslim who think same like you do. It is wrong to stop people worship.
The violent gang in Tambun Bekasi was wrong then against the Christians same like the gang against the Hindus this time.
I am happy when you say that many good Muslim Indonesian people respect other religions and are not same like violent gangs.

It is important not to forget what happened in Tambun. Very few of the bad people were punished for their violence.
