UK Town-Twinning Racket? Still Rotten After All These Years?

An exceedingly boring, rambling rant by that leftist loudmouth Adonis on the Europhiliac TNE site…

.

.

…but he offered town-twinning as an example of a way of promoting anti-Brexit emotionalism, which brought back my own fight with that rotten racket.

One of the oft-repeated refrains of the pro-twinning councillors where I then lived, about 50 miles from London, was that it was not an excuse for jolly councillor junkets.

.

.

So, I asked, as the only councillor who consistently voted against twinning, what about the trips to ‘our’ twin town in Germany?

.

.

’Oh, we don’t use tax-payers’ money to pay for our trips!’ was their indignant retort.

So who does pay for all your lovely meals, and your rather fancy hotel accommodation, and the outings to places of interest, was my curious response.

.

.

‘Oh, the German town picks up the tab for all that!’

And when the German dignitaries come here on a reciprocal basis?

Well, of course our town pays for that! We couldn’t expect our guests to stump up! That would be ungracious, and you’re being ungracious to suggest we shouldn’t!’

So Yours Truly was the bad guy!

I proceeded to write, in my ( self-financed ) councillor’s news-letter, which went through the letter-box of every one of the several thousand people I was elected to represent, a summary of these exchanges.

I pointed out that this was no more than morally corrupt mutual back-scratching, ‘freebies’ galore for my venal council colleagues, a rip-off perpetrated at German local tax-payers’ expense…

.

.

…and ‘freebies’ galore for a bunch of German council notables, perpetrated at MY electorate’s expense.

WOW!

NOT!

Since it was all true, they couldn’t call me a liar, but ‘mischief-maker’ was the nicest term deployed against me.

My call for a local referendum was howled down – it was not something that should be decided by those who pay the bills.

Last I heard, it was still going on…

….though there was talk of the EUSSR using MORE tax-payers’ money to fund these rackets, with local councils..
