  • Of course, it’s actually not the imaginary Hagrid we should cheer, but the actor, Robbie Coltrane, who displayed a huge amount of Scots common-sense last week, when he spoke up in defence of JK Rowling.

  • “I don’t think what she said was offensive really,” Coltrane said during an interview with the Radio Times. “I don’t know why, but there’s a whole Twitter generation of people who hang around waiting to be offended. They wouldn’t have won the war, would they?”

  • As Coltrane recognised when he told his interviewer that ‘he did not want to speak on the issue any further “because of all the hate mail and all that s— which I don’t need at my time of life.”
