So this very overcast day, more traffic chaos likely in Jakarta, as the most extreme fanatics in Indonesia plan to ‘visit’ the French Embassy, which is on a normally very busy main road downtown…

….the ‘visit’ not, of course, to express sympathy at the beheading of a brave Parisian teacher by an evil barbarian….

As of tomorrow, Jakarta is on holiday, an Islamic holiday affording everyone a very long weekend, Wednesday through Friday, so traffic will be light.  A demo tomorrow would thus not much impact traffic.

Greater disruption will be imposed on honest working citizens as the fanatics turn out to do their thing today, but tough on honest working citizens!

But they’re the crowd that prides itself on having overseen marches (shuffles, actually) distinguished by hollering about ex-Governor Ahok, of whom they disapproved.

Ahok, now, thankfully out of prison, after being convicted ( in the 21st century, incredibly!) of ‘blasphemy!’

But a march/shuffle, or a ‘visit’ or a demo, or whatever, is one thing.

The cops here are used to such antics and can handle such situations.

What is much more sinister is the assertion by their ubiquitous spokesman, Novel Bakmunin…

That weasel word ‘sweeping’ is not Indonesian, of course, but I include the sentence from the local media to illustrate how it has become embedded in the vocabulary here……

It’s not even as if all French citizens are white!

Will the self-righteous  bullies accost any foreign-looking folks going about legitimate business in the city, arrogantly demanding to see their passports?

If so, one hopes all honest expats will give such insolent importunates the brush-off, perhaps with this admonition….
