I’ve generally had nothing but praise for the Guv, but he does have a Victorian streak!
But much more seriously, I didn’t like the way he deployed the military to help destroy the small Kali Jodo community in North Jakarta and his Satpol PP civic militia have, both before and since that episode, stomped the livelihoods of more poor people in at least one part of West Jakarta.

One of my readers reported this to me in the comments column and on inspection of the scene, I saw for myself how dozens of food-stalls have been forcibly closed down. They were not obstructing the jalan buntu (cul-de sac) they did business in and were enjoyed every lunchtime by hundreds of employees from the adjacent office-complex.
But while I disapprove of some of his actions, he’s still a better person than anyone who serves the fanatic media outfit called Al Jazeera.

…so I had to laugh at the Jakarta Globe report this week, about some Dutch hackette who’s gone into shrilling mode because Ahok got exasperated at a press conference about a tobacco expo due to be held in our fine city and told her off in no uncertain terms.
Al-Jazeera journalist Step Vaessen, a Dutch national, asked why he allowed the exhibition to be staged in the Indonesian capital when other countries had refused.
“You foreigners shouldn’t threaten our sovereignty with your silly thoughts. You [foreigners] are trying to introduce synthetic cigarettes [to replace Indonesia’s clove cigarettes]. Ahok is perfectly entitled to make those points. He’d probably say the same to me if he bothered to read my comments above on Kali Jodo etc.
He’d CERTAINLY say the same to me if I complained at the way smokers are ever more harshly persecuted in Jakarta…
…ridiculous bans on smoking OUTDOORS, as in Plaza Semanggi, where I lit up in the open area on the north side of the mall and was quickly ordered not to by a security man.

It’s ridiculous.
However, Ahok is keen to get business to come to Jakarta and sees no reason to have to justifiy himself, even to some pretty little Dutch girl. (She is pretty – I checked Google for pix!).
…Vaessen said Basuki is well aware that she is a journalist and not an anti-tobacco activist. “Why was I yelled at because of my question?” she wrote in one post in Bahasa Indonesia.
(NB -Basuki is the formal form of Ahok’s name)
Most of us are fully aware that many journalists are indistinguishable from activists, given the biased hogwash they dish up on issues like illegal immigration.

A lot of them refuse even to identify illegals as illegals, instead resorting to dishonest words like ‘undocumented.’
In Sweden, they cover up crimmigrant crime.
Maybe little Step isn’t one of those, but I’d be wary of anybody who works for an unwholesome organisation like Al Jazeera.

Not upset? She SOUNDS upset.
If she’d been treated the way Jakarta Islamists treat women, she’d be more entitled to her indignation.
Al Jazeera is a vile thing. We’ve covered its poisonous mind-set more than once and a lot of good citizens in the West have done good work trying to stop unsuspecting companies advertising on it.
And in the USA, the Al Jazeera ratbags got what was coming to them!
No bloody wonder!

In an email obtained by National Review Online, van Meek warned the network’s journalists against the use of terms including “terrorist,” “militant,” “Islamist” and “jihad.”
“One person’s terrorist is another person’s freedom fighter,” the Al Jazeera executive wrote.
The word “extremist” was labeled off-limits. “Avoid characterizing people,” van Meek said. “Often their actions do the work for the viewer.”
“Do not use,” van Meek’s said of the term “Islamist.” He described it as “a simplistic label.”
BTW, I’ll be making a point of publicising the expo at least a few times every week – it’s on 27/28th April, at Jakarta International Expo Centre.
