Bizarrely, at present, ‘babies born in Germany to two non-German parents can typically become citizens if one of their parents has been living in the country for eight years.’

Why, for pity’s sakes?

If one parent is German, no worries, but when two aliens produce another alien, it’s obviously not German.

A cuckoo hatched in a nightingale’s nest remains a cuckoo all its life!

And what’s the big change?

Under the new rules, children would only be granted German citizenship if their parents prove their identity and nationality.

So if mummy and daddy prove they’re both Turkish, or Somali – or Canadian or Estonian, for that matter – then their little darling gets to be German?

That sounds so nutty that I’m hoping I have misunderstood that section of Seehofer’s proposals.

According to DW, this weak-kneed waffle law would have been much more effective had not the Socialist ‘Justice Minister,’ a woman named Katarina Barley.

She reportedly refused to accept attempts by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer to allow authorities to strip children under the age of five of their citizenship if their parents had unlawfully acquired German citizenship, for instance, by deception.

What kind of German would object to Seehofer’s sensible proposal?

It seemed unfair to exclude myself from the list of recipients, so I bought one of those bargain packs of bacon, under $AUD 8.00 – here in Jakarta, it would cost three times that, at least.

However, this had one unexpected consequence. When I inspected it more closely there was an advisory saying that, once opened, the contents should be consumed within four days!

Hence, from last Thursday night, until Chinese New Year’s Eve, my diet included bacon with every meal. Bacon sandwiches, bacon with fried potatoes, bacon with noodles!

• Why haven’t the children or their parents ended their detention simply by going back home?  How many are genuinely in fear of their lives if they return, and how many are economic refugees?

• Under what circumstances were the art works by the children produced? Are they authentic expressions of distress or were the children coached to produce them to increase pressure on the government to let in the detainees? Why did the handwriting on some of the childish pictures look adult?

• What would be the consequences of letting in the children? Would that encourage more parents to load their children onto boats to Australia, and how many would drown?

• What ages were the “children” interviewed last night? What effort was made to check the circumstances under which they came?

The bare facts or assertions presented last night are indeed troubling. But this report was so one-sided that it simply cannot be taken seriously as a contribution to a debate over a very difficult issue.

Nauru police commissioner Corey Caleb rejected the reports, claiming “refugees regularly fabricate allegations of assault and sexual assault”.

In statement released on Tuesday, Commissioner Caleb lambasted “friendly Australian journalists who have a political agenda” for publicising the “lies”.“They tell us they have been assaulted but their stories seldom add up,” he said.

He accused journalists of encouraging false reporting, adding that the refugees would be charged with making a false complaint had the allegation been made in Australia.
