Can’t Bekasi ‘Scholar’ Grasp That Respect Goes Two Ways!

Sad to see that Bekasi, where I used to live ( it’s adjacent to Jakarta, though in the Province of West Java) and where I didn’t much like living….

The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI ) Bekasi Regency, West Java (West Java), asked culinary business actors to respect Muslims who fast during the month of Ramadan by closing their businesses during the day.
.This request is addressed to culinary business owners, such as restaurants, cafes, restaurants, coffee shops, and the like.
In other words, the “scholars…”
Yes, them again, whose distinctive contribution to Indonesian society we have noticed time and again, from years ago….

“I appeal to culinary business owners to respect the holy month of Ramadan by closing their business premises during the day during Ramadan,” said Secretary General of MUI Bekasi Regency KH Muhiddin Kamal in Cikarang as reported by Antara . , Saturday (26/3/2022).
…
Why should anyone, not obliged by his or her creed to go without, be denied access to ‘culinary premises?’
Nobody’s trying to lure passing Muslims into self-indulgence!
And from a serious Muslim’s point of view?

Where’s the merit, the spiritual discipline, in denying oneself foodstuffs if there’s no food available anyway?
..
But who cares what I think?
My Indonesian readers might appreciate a report on a local voice raised in protest against the shut-down demand.
But I can do no better than quote the late President of Indonesia, Gus Dur, a revered Muslim scholar, who exalted religious liberty and tolerance.
He urged fasters to respect non-fasters!
.
‘If we feel we are Muslims enjoying respect, let us fast with respect for those who are not fasting.’

It is so. I respect friends who fast, I do not offer them tasty cakes. I can be respected if I do not fast, they do not say you must not enjoy cakes in the cafe.
