‘Paha Panik’ Bojonegoro – A Thigh Risk Strategy!

Pos Kupang’s latest report moves me once more to ask if there is no Indonesian equivalent to the UK offence of ‘wasting police time.’

But even if there is, I guess the cops in Bojonegoro won’t arrest each other for doing just that!

I refer of course to the annual flurry of self-righteousness which heralds the advent of Ramadan, raids on places people like to have fun, often characterised as ‘dimly-lit stalls,’ sometimes carried out by arrogant IslamoNazi gangsters, but also, and in this case, by the forces of law and order.

Such swoops reflect the double-standards embedded in so many minds here, whereby knocking back hard liquor and carousing with ‘strumpets’ – that’s the Google Translation gem I got today, quite charmingly old-fashioned, really –  are execrable activities – but only to be significantly targetted during one month of the year, purely on sectarian grounds. 

I should mention that the actual Indonesian phrase in the report was kupu kupu malam, literally ‘night butterflies,’ a much prettier term to apply to these harmless girls, surely?

The reporter breathlessly recounts how the raids created panic among the strumpets and patrons…, when karaoke rooms were entered, there was haste to cover bosoms and thighs –

Dada can be translated as bosom, breasts or even just a decent spot of cleavage.

Paha? – thighs, the bete noire of crackpot kill-joys here!

Always makes me think of that awful man, Suryadharma Ali, until recently Minister of Religious Affairs, who infamously decreed that hem-lines below the knee were a ‘universal criterion’ for morally acceptable women’s wear.

Since raids like this cause not only panic, as stated, but also stress, anxiety, fear and disruption, I remain slightly bemused how they contribute to welcoming Ramadan, which, I’m reliably informed, is supposed to be about introspection and contemplation…

What bras literally hold is not an uncommon topic of discussion, usually among beer-drinkers, as the bra-owners shimmy into bars, but their deep ideological content is something that has never occurred to me, or to anyone I know, to think about, never mind talk or write about!

However, it’s a matter of grave concern to the editorial board of a college newspaper.

That august body has declared that bras are racist because they come in colors named “nude,” since non-white people’s skin isn’t that color when they’re nude.

I declined to use Alvi Amel’s name last week when the story broke about a celebrity hooker in a posh hotel. She had denied that the lady with the initials A.A. was her glamorous self, and it seemed churlish to add to her embarrassment.

Thereafter, adds ‘T.C.,’ she detected ‘arrogance’ in Alvi!

These raids are an immense waste of police time – nobody is alleged to have forced anyone into anything, and if the going rate is $6000 bucks, more fool the punter.

I won’t make a fuss, having recently drawn attention to the seeming preference for swoops on humble hotels and lodgings, rather than the haunts of the rich and famous, which a five-star joint in Kuningan certainly is!

Bishop’s Boobs? Greer Trivialises Drug-Crim Executions!

I’ve never had much time for Germaine Greer, a sorry left-over from the bra-burning Sixties, but her performance on Oz tv this week was more pathetic than usual.

• No matter what your view on the Bali drug-crims, it was surely puerile for Greer to trivialise the situation by asking of Foreign Minister Julie Bishop if she’d bare her boobs as the price of freezing Indonesia’s firing squad plans.

It’s hardly most people’s idea of a fit subject for humour!

I’ve not got into this debate, much, partly because the Festive Season has distracted me, and partly because it was important to see how Farage handled himself.

He did okay with the breasts, but….
