Petition – True-Blue UK Passports, Made In UK, Please!

Wow, not every Monday morning I begin blogging with a warm welcome to an article in a site which boasts ‘Everything Labour’ as it’s motto. But who’s to disagree with me, after the government reportedly awarded the new £490m passports contract to Franco-Dutch firm Gemalto – not UK supplier De La Rue.

Supporters claim the move – which would see passports being made outside of the UK – puts hundreds of British jobs at risk, and also poses a security risk.

Sign the petition: We demand the new blue UK passport is made in Britain to support UK jobs.

The petition says such a decision would not be taken in France, “where they produce their own passports in the interests of national security”.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Today programme, De La Rue chief executive Martin Sutherland said: “I’d like to ask Theresa May or Amber Rudd to come to my factory and explain to our dedicated workforce why this is a sensible decision to offshore the manufacture of a British icon.”

The ‘LabourList’ petition is fine by me – my primary concern is to see proud Brits at last free to cast those grotty pink ( yeah, they say it’s ‘burgundy’ but it looks pink) EUSSR passports into a handy dustbin…

Being always fair, even to governments which rarely deserve it, I must acknowledge the announcement by May’s Immigration Minister, Brandon Lewis, that he is to act on my call last year…

My pleasure is naturally enhanced by the sure and certain knowledge that the news will give Enemy Within hacks, like those in the Guardian, serious indigestion – long before they sit down to their Christmas dinners.

Unfortunately, these nice new patriot passports will not be issued until after October 2019.

One has to assume that the hated EUSSR banner will also still affront our gaze as we walk by the embassy here in Jakarta…

(which, since it transferred from the busy junction in the heart of the city to a leafy back-street, where nobody really walks except vendors of cheap local foods, is basically invisible to ordinary Jakartans)

…will also continue to flutter offensively beside the only flag to which true Brits owe allegiance.

Since the decision was taken by those who matter ( the British people, not posturing creeps like Anna Soubry and the other collaborators at Westminster) I have consistently maintained that these significant steps should have been taken last summer.

All Jakarta is on holiday today, except for all those down-trodden people who have to work in the malls, one of which I have just returned from with much needed supplies both for myself and an exceedingly disgruntled feline.

She unusually didn’t go walkabout last night because of the fire-works, which were still audible when I rose this morning!

Now I just want to put my feet up, but first, being in a mildly whimsical frame of mind…

….I’m going to post on an issue that may not be anyone’s top priority in The Old Country, and even less so here.

Yet it strikes me as another of those agreeable examples of ‘gesture politics’ which could be announced instantly and implemented gradually, as people’s old documents expire and have to be replaced.

Look at that!

I purposely omit the Brussels burgundy-coloured cover, which anyone who recalls the good old true-blue British passports  – they looked so impressive – would surely be glad to see the back of. Nor will I waste time on the waste of space within, with all those languages, Greek, Erse, etc.

It’s the other inside part that rankles, that defines the second-class status handed to sovereign countries by the Euro-Commissars.

Right there at the top, ‘European Union,’ as if to hammer home the ‘who rules’ message to every poor Brit obliged to carry the damned thing.

The sooner the better, those traumatised apparatchiks in the UK Foreign Office should be ordered to telephone their regular provider of printing services… 

 

And bring this BRITISH passport back into use!
