    Tolong, Transmart, Koordinasi, Ya?

About a month ago, I was in Grogol, and decided to walk down to Podomoro City mall, as I needed to replenish my supplies of coffee and figured Carrefour superstore, or Transmart Carrefour, as it has been cumbersomely renamed, would have that commodity for sale.

    It did.

It also had baked beans discounted to about Rp.16,000, so, having been from boyhood partial to beans n toast, with now and then some sausages,  as a midnight snack…

    As enjoyed in Merry England

They were the local Ayam Brand beans, just as tasty, in my opinion, as the Western beans I used to devour.

I stuck four cans in my basket.

The cashier proceeded to ring them up – no discount!

I pointed this out, and he politely asked me to take up the dispute at their information desk

I did, and my over-payment was refunded.

Mistakes happen. All staff concerned were polite, though I wasted more than 15 minutes waiting for justice.

Then, on Thursday this week, where should I find myself but Transmart Carrefour…

    • Blok M Square's Carrefour

    …this time their Blok M branch. I wanted a cuddly toy for a friend’s new-born baby.

Got one, then saw catfood at Rp.66,000 per bag.

    Cheap! Discount!

A lot of stores price identical feline provisions at  Rp.70,000 and one outrageous fancy-pants place near Bunderan HI recently demanded around Rp. 90,000!

    posh cats

Happy me, to find a bargain, to take home to a happy cat.

Till I reached the cashier. Old price uncorrected, so back to another information desk. Another 15 plus minute wait, sorted out, again with civility.

Had I been in a hurry, I would not have disputed the cashier’s price. A lot of people probably don’t. Maybe my own misreading of the price label on the shelves to blame?

No, entirely inefficiency on the part of somebody who gets paid to coordinate the discounts and the cash registers!

This sloppiness is unacceptable, unreasonable and unfair.

    Transmart Carrefour, smarten up!

This is not a good piece of news.
One time, customers can forgive the mistake but more than one time, Transmart must do some investigation.
Tomorrow I will go to Transmart at Harmoni near my house and buy some discount.
We can see what may happen.

    Cheap Little Reptiles In Jakarta!

No, I’m not talking about the slimy fanatics who want to burn Governor Ahok.

It’s actual reptiles, on sale in Jakarta’ Citraland Mall near Grogol…

…where I stopped on my way back from the persecuted Christians’ Easter Sunday Service downtown. Oppressed Christians In The Street Heat, In Pluralist Indonesia

Short of provisions, I was delighted to find both eggs and bananas offered at 50% discounts.

Although eager to get home and put my feet up, I was nevertheless distracted from my planned sharp exit by a crowd of shoppers milling around in one corner of the mall. When I neared the throng, what should I see but a large sign, advertising –

    GECKOS, Buy 1, Get 1 Free…

    Gambar terkait

    Or words to that effect.

Now, if I really wanted a gecko, I could get one free most every day, were I fast enough to grab one, There are lots, darting around the streets of the housing complex where I live.

    But I don’t.

I already enjoy reptilian guests galore, the little cecak, which often drop by, and sit still on my living-room walls or slink around my sink.

No zoologist, I’d say they’re little cousins of the gecko.

Cute and harmless, and presumably devourers of bugs, they are welcome guests, whom I do my best to protect from my cat’s predatory instincts.

But it wasn’t just geckos on sale on Sunday arvo.

A small ‘Bali python’ was on display, and I mean small, more like a large earth-worm…

…nothing at all in common with those that menace gorgeous women like J-Lo in silly movies.

Oh, she had trouble with an anaconda, not a python? Never mind, the illustration surely didn’t go amiss.

But I felt sorry for them all, those tiny snakes, newts, etc.

Do the folks that buy them on a whim genuinely take good care of them?

Good Cheap Books! In English! Kuningan City, Limited Offer!

Took a trip into town today, weather fine, meeting some nice young Indonesians to tell them some traveller’s tales!

They liked best the one about my trip to Frankfurt for the World Cup!

    The one in 1974!

Since traffic was extraordinarily uncongested, I detoured into Kuningan City mall, my plan being to scour Lotte Mart for discounts.

Apples 70% off, eggs 50% off.

…a little ‘book-fair” shop, only there till the end of November, so the nice girl said, selling good quality imported paperbacks for prices as low as Rp. 30,000!

It’s downstairs, just to the right of the entrance to Lotte Mart, near Century apotek.

    I bought two.

And will go back next week when I have more time to browse.

This is a public service announcement!

Pondok Indah Mall, Books on Sale! Till 26th June?

Got back from an outing to PIM not long ago, and have to report that Periplus book store has some bargains this week and next.

    PIM -Pondok Indah Mall

In fact the shop assistant who served me said the discounts would last till 26th June!

I got two paperbacks, one being Stephen King’s ‘Dome’ which was originally priced at over Rp.100,000, and another, by a lesser known author, again marked above Rp.100k.

There were stickers attached telling would-be buyers they were now Rp.41,000 and Rp.38,000 respectively.

    • ================================
    • A good buy, by anyone’s standards!
    • But when I took them over to the cashier, I was delighted to learn that the sale meant ANOTHER 50% reduction, so I only had to pay the princely sum of Rp.40,000 for the two of them!

So get yourselves on down there to Periplus, while it lasts.

Bir! Diskon! Cheap Beer, Jakarta, till 14th February!

Just another public service announcement, nice discounts on beer at Lotte Mart. After last night’s party, it’s only now, mid-evening, that my thoughts feel like straying towards the amber nectar! But on the way to the party, I did a quick bit of shopping and saw the deal at Ratu Plaza, but I assume other branches too have the same discounts.

WARNING – it expires this Sunday, 14th.

Lotte Mart, Ratu Plaza Ratu Plaza

    • Of course you need to buy 48 cans to get the 25% discount, so hauling that home on public transport might be a challenging chore. Best buy 480 and find a friendly kopaja driver!

But there are smaller discounts on a minimum purchase of four bottles – of most brands – and that can’t be bad!

Regular price for a big bottle of Bintang is under Rp.28K – cheaper than most, including Prost, which had good inaugural prices, but has now become dearer than Bintang!

Plaza Semanggi Gives New Meaning to The Word ‘Soon!’

I’ going out now, but not to Plaza Semanggi!

I did go there recently, and thought to inspect the new food market in the basement, which was promised as a replacement for the quite good Giant Supermart, where useful discounts were often to be had.

    • ========

    Looking back on previous posts…

Misteri Gunung Semanggi – Kemana Raksasanya? A Giant Vanishes!

…I see that particular promise was dangled back last year, about FOUR MONTHS AGO.

Hence, imagine my chagrin when I travelled down the escalator only to see the same boring sign, announcing it would open ‘soon!’

I went there to seek a new battery for my wrist-watch.

Once upon a time, PS had lots of little shops where bargains were available, if you persevered.

No more, not if a watch-battery’s what you’re after. I went to the only watch-shop I could find downstairs – there was one at ground-level, but its exterior was so glitzy, I took one look and concluded it wouldn’t be within my price-range – and after deep discussion, the proprietor offered me a battery for Rp.85, 000 – which I naturally spurned.

I knew that the honest orologists at Permata Hijau would do better, but since yesterday I was at Citraland, I tried there…

Yesterday’s visitor had confirmed my belief that Rp.50K was the most I should pay, so I wandered hopefully into the first promising store and asked.

    I wandered back out, disgusted.

Only three or four doors down, heading towards the Hero supermarket, there’s another little shop. In I went, and emerged five minutes later with a working watch, the battery having cost me exactly what Wonder-Visitor had predicted.

AND I got eggs in Hero on 50% discount!

Today’s traditional Sunday breakfast is a sure thing!
