Jakarta Fanatic Rally – Traffic Havoc – Top Cop Speaks Up!

Good to hear Indonesia’s top cop has pledged to prevent the Islamist fanatics implementing their nasty anti-social scheme to create traffic havoc.

General Tito Karnavian denounced the notorious sectarian extremist Habib Rizieq’s statement, which said the Dec. 2 protesters would carry out Friday prayers across the capital’s two main roads, namely Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman.

Curiously, the Jakarta Post reporter didn’t explain to JP readers about Rizieq, whom they described merely as a ‘spokesman’ for the GNPF-MUI  – that’s the recently organised ‘National Movement to Save the Indonesian Ulema Council’s Edicts…‘

In the days when I had time to spare, my choice was always the ocean wave rather than way up high.

But one resigns oneself to it, pretending one is on a bus and avoiding the sight of clouds outside your window. Now, however, taking an actual bus here in Indonesia, at least in one major city, is going to be a bit of an ordeal as well.

Bandung, West Java’s top city, has many buses going to and fro on its streets, and the Jakarta Post last weekend reported there’s to be a program for Islamic preachers to board city buses and give sermons.

Apart from the fact that no similar opportunity to hector helpless passengers appears to have been offered to Christian, Buddhist or Hindu preachers, who needs sermons when you’re on the way to work?

Anyone Muslim in Bandung, or anywhere in West Java, who wants to enjoy spiritual uplift, has a choice of multitudinous mosques to drop by. Most people who board a bus like to doze off, read a paper, or chat to whomsoever’s sitting next to them.

What gives Bandung City the right to disturb their preferred peaceful pastimes?

But it gets even weirder – the Mayor claims not to know anything about this sectarian propaganda scheme.

According to Latief, the sermons will only happen on state-owned DAMRI buses. In Jakarta, they only run to the airport, but in Bandung, I don’t know.

I trust this would be a serious examination measuring the troopers’ understanding of comparative religion?

Or would it be to ensure the candidates’ grasp of Indonesia’s constitutional commitment to pluralism, that key right to worship freely, practising whatever faith you have personally chosen as your own?

Or would it be some sort of catechism, Q and A on the tenets of only one creed? That would deny equal rights to those many faiths which the government declines to recognise when inscribing religious affiliation on the ID cards which every citizen has to carry.

It would also be absolutely meaningless in terms of evaluating the moral worth of those tested. The TNI (armed forces) say the two-finger tests are all about “the dignity and the honor of the nation!” Yet even the most ardent unbeliever can swot up on the tenets of any and every faith and presumably pass with flying colours.

In fairness to the MUI, their proposed test is no more ridiculous than the existing one, and arguably less grossly offensive to the dignity of every woman in the world.

It will be fascinating to see if the  International Committee on Military Medicine (ICMM), whose 41st world conference is due to open tomorrow, right here in Indonesia, at Nusa Dua Convention Center, in Bali, has the cojones (will they be tested!) to take up the issue.
