Book-Hating Bigots V Peaceful Religious Dissenters – Cops As Referees?

I hope you had a pleasant weekend.

    I did.

But a congregation of decent, peaceful, inoffensive Indonesians did not.

An Islamist mob showed up to ‘reject the launch of a book called Haqiqatul Wahy on Saturday, planned to have been held in the Ahmadis’ Mubarak Mosque, in East Bandung.

Accompanied by a number of police and TNI officials, dozens of people who claimed to be a combination of 27 mass organizations in Bandung, including the organization of the Islamic Defenders Front and the Sundanese Champions broke up an Ahmadiyah gathering.

Clarification for new readers, on this latest shameful affront to Indonesia’s once proud principles of religious tolerance –

‘TNI’ means the country’s armed forces.

And the Ahmadiyah are the most persecuted, yet paradoxically the most peaceful and inoffensive, religious minority in the land.

    And the ‘Islamic Defenders’ Front?’

    That’s the FPI!

Here’s a picture to illustrate their concept of religious tolerance.

Oh, yeah, that’s about Buddhists, and then there’s women…IslamoNazi Gauleiter – “Women Already Have Limitations, Let Alone Non-Muslims!” …and as for their previous record on Ahmadis, read this –FPI in West Java – ‘Let’s Burn Out the Orphans!’

The Ahmadis’ bigot tormentors have made their lives a misery for years, oppression which intensified after the self-styled ‘scholars’ of the MUI issued a fatwa against them…

Cops – “Islamist ‘Scholars’ Can Veto Religious Liberty”

…a dogmatic diktat soon followed by the infamous Tri-Ministerial Decree promulgated ten years ago, under President SBY.

Here are a few previous posts to bring you up to speed with the evils done to them over the past decade or so.…

Victim of Islamist Murder Mob Gets Six Months in the Slammer

    ahmadis transito
Savage bigots in Lombok destroy Ahmadi homes -100 cops just watched – and that wasn’t this month, it was YEARS ago.

In Squalid Internal Exile, Lombok Ahmadis Denied Voting Rights

But back to Bandung this past weekend, where the mob was ‘overseen by police and armed forces,https://news.okezone.com/read/2019/01/05/525/2000379/acara-peluncuran-buku-ahmadiyah-haqiqatul-wahy-dibubarkan-massa and the bigots’ vehicle was seen to display ‘black and white banners which in Indonesia are identified with Hizbut Tahrir, which was banned last year.’

Not only that, but they maintained that their grotesque intolerance was justified by the local (West Java) regulation version of the afore-mentioned Tri-Ministerial Decree -‘which already clearly outlaws activities of Jemaah Ahmadiyah.

So said Muhammad Ro’in, Chair of the Indonesian Islamic Da’wah Council, a spokesman for the mob, adding a rant about the theological content of the Ahmadi book, which, he declared, meant that stopping the book-launch was ‘not a violation of the human rights of the JAI followers.’

    Mansyur Ahmad

The Chairman of Jamaah Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI)  in Bandung, Mansyur Ahmad, felt that what was happening was unjust, but simply said that he accepted their fate at the hands of the mob, quoting an Ahmadi motto, ‘Love to all, enmity to nobody.’

Para Peserta Peluncuran Buku Haqiqatul Wahy Keluar Lokasi Acara dengan Pengawalan Polisi (foto: Julia Alazka untuk BBC News Indonesia)

‘They have agreed to disperse of their own accord at 10.30am,’ said Ro’in, while one ranting Islamist yelled that if they did not disperse, ‘we will go in there!.”

At 10.30 the bigot rabble were duly loitering at the scene, with dozen of cops simultaneously on duty there.

The officer in charge, Irman Sugema, denied they were taking the side of the intolerant mob.

“No,no, actually we police are on guard. If we weren’t, they might already have gone in there…we are on guard.”

    Related image

He stressed that the police were working to prevent clashes between the two sides. According to him, the event ended one and a half hours earlier than scheduled, based on an agreement between the two parties facilitated by the Coordinating Board of Trustees of the Society of Communities (Bakorpakem) in Bandung and accompanied by police and the TNI.

Commander Sugema appears to think that the job of the police is to prevent mayhem.

Keeping the peace is of course important.

But equally, allowing bands of fanatics to threaten mayhem if decent people do not cease and desist from perfectly respectable, legitimate and plainly peaceful activities?

That’s not what many people, here in Indonesia and abroad, expect of the constabulary.

I personally can’t see any moral equivalence between people holding a harmless book launch and a pack of intolerant bullies.

The cops have batons and guns and could have dispersed the louts who came there to cause trouble.

The atmosphere had heated up when several people uttered utterances of hatred and harsh words.

One of the journalists present, Rio Tuasikai, nearly became the victim of mob violence for recording  one hate-freak’s outbursts.

Rio was dragged off by five of the louts and forced to delete his film.

    Were they arrested?

Were there any arrests for ‘SARA?”

That’s the Indonesian term for incitement to ethnic or sectarian hate.

Anyway, too depressing to go on about this. My Indonesian readers can use any number ofl inks to learn more.

I’ll wind up with a little more more context.

This hatred for books among Islamist fanatics is nothing new.

    We even had a book-BURNING, Nazi-style, a few years ago…

…in which Indonesia’s largest publishing company, Gramedia, gleefully participated!

And it should be noted that a mob of savages even managed a Koran-burning, again a few years ago…

Ahmadi Koran burned by Islamists in Cisalada, 2011

…although to be fair, that has to put in context – the brutes burned much of the little town where the Ahmadis lived.

PS – here’s a list of examples of oppression which we reproduced last year –In Jakarta, Persecuted Ahmadis Seek Justice!  – there have been other incidents since then.

Nothing to Do This Jakarta Sunday? Karnaval!

I am not in the habit of offering my Indonesian readers a fun day out with fanatical Islamists, but having seen this huge billboard at Slipi last week, it seemed churlish not to share with you the opportunity to savour the delights of a ‘Karnaval!’

——.Hasil gambar untuk fpi spanduk 2018 slipi

I was crossing the footbridge at the Halte Busway at Slipi Pertamburan, when I spotted the huge ad, so I paused my stately stride to study the smiling faces, several of whom I recognised, not least that of the ‘Grand Imam’ of the FPI, the ‘Islam Defender Front,’ Habib Rizieq, whom we have featured so many times in our writings…

    • ===

    •  Habib Rizieq, who famously suggested the Christian Governor Ahok be slain for unacceptably quoting some Koranic verse –.“We encourage the government to process the death penalty for Ahok as soon as possible,” said Rizieq.

…and there too, second from the left, was his longtime henchman, Sobri Lubis…

Sobri Lubis, infamous for his exhortation to a mob of rabid savages to ‘kill, kill, kill’ the peaceful Ahmadiyah minority. See him on the video!

…another figure well-known to our readers.

Who could resist a chance to see these luminaries up close?

But it’s the ‘Karnaval’ that tickled my fancy.

    Image result for carnival

Halfway down the list of attractions, you can see it…

    ‘Karnaval Laskar Pembela Islam.’

That’s the ‘Islam Defence FIGHTERS,’ who are presumably even more militant than the rest of the FPI…

….and we know how militant most of them are!

So if you have nowt better to do tomorrow, off you go and see what constitutes a ‘carnival’ for such people!

No need to be scared by their ‘militancy.’

Who’s ‘Moderate?’ Ask Jakarta Foreign Correspondents!

I had an email last week, from the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club, advertising one of their frequent meetings at which prominent Indonesians are invited to speak.

    Gambar terkait

Unfortunately, they often chop and change their times and dates, which makes one rather reluctant to attend.

This time, today, it’s Muhammad Zainul Majdi, Governor of West Nusa Tenggara Province, and I was fascinated by the JFCC’s laudatory description of His Excellency.

    • tuan-guru-bajang-kh-zainul-majdi-ma-pemimpin-ntb-baru_htm
    • The Governor
    • =======================

Also known as Tuan Guru Bajang, or TGB, he not only has a strong economic track record and reputation as a progressive governor of West Nusa Tenggara, but is also a highly respected Muslim scholar and proponent of moderate Islam.

I can’t comment on his ‘economic track record,’ but TGB’s ‘moderate Islam?’ Are the senders of that JFCC email unaware of his views on the persecuted Ahmadiyah?

Those Muslim dissenters have suffered monstrous maltreatment in recent years, in various provinces, like Banten, which is only a few miles from where I live in Jakarta…

Victim of Islamist Murder Mob Gets Six Months in the Slammer

…but also in Zainul’s own territory.

    ahmadis transito
Savage bigots in Lombok destroy Ahmadi homes -100 cops just watched – and that wasn’t this month, it was YEARS ago.
In Squalid Internal Exile, Lombok Ahmadis Denied Voting Rights

And while the scandalous bigotry pictured above was indeed years ago, only this month, moronic savages again ran amok in Lombok

Ahmadi community comes under attack in East Lombok, as homes and properties destroyed

“The attacks were based on similar reasons: hatred and intolerance,” said a spokesperson for the Ahmadiyah Indonesia Congregation.
“It’s not the first and definitely won’t be the last attack. It’s been years and the Ahmadi community continues to live under threats…”

So what do we know of TGB’s thoughts on this dire situation?  Have they become less intolerant than when he indulged in the following outburst?

Zainul Majdi says that he did not see why the Ahmadiyah should be part of the island’s plans to follow in the footsteps of neighboring Bali, a noted tourist hotspot.

Ahmadis, Zainul said, would be better off moving out of the province entirely or agreeing to a proposal to relocate to a remote island in West Nusa Tenggara. The governor said the sect…did not fit into his drive to ramp up Lombok’s tourist appeal.

Instead of blaming the foul bigots harassing the peaceful and inoffensive Ahmadis, Zainul went on to claim it was the victims’ own fault –

‘It was only after they formed their own community, maintaining their exclusivity and proselytizing their faith did friction with surrounding areas occur.”

Why on earth should they not proselytise?

Do not Zainul and many other Muslims believe they have a duty to spread their faith?

Does Zainul not think others should enjoy the same right?

It’s true the man has criticised the vigilante gangs, and he does not endorse violence, but he is surely, on the evidence of his own words, no ‘moderate’ on matters of religious liberty UNLESS he has had a dramatic change of heart!

But perhaps the ‘foreign correspondents’ who sent out that email did not know of his blatant victim-blaming.

Or, who knows, they have evidence that he has repented…

    Gambar terkait

….and apologised for his erstwhile intolerance.

Nobody would be happier than me to hear their proof that he’s a reformed character!

If that’s not the case, if he still sticks by his previous appalling assertions, and the JFCC are ignorant of those assertions, then they’re doing a shockingly sloppy job and should be replaced by journalists who know what they’re talking about.

My initial remarks about how JFCC chops and changes their meeting schedule?

    YUP, they’ve done it again.

When I got home last night, another email was waiting for me, to say today’s meeting has been changed to tomorrow.

If those quotes you give us about that governor are true then the JFCC should be thinking hard about what stories their ‘foreign correspondents’ are sending out.

      Very bad.
Who are these foreigner media people ?
Better they go home and study before they talk ignorantly about our Indonesia.
Why can any person call this TGB moderate when he would force peaceful people from their homes because they worship in a different way.
Maybe JFCC like it if Ahmadiya people are forced to become refugee people?
      Very very bad.

        Yes, Pak Subiyanto. We agree.
It is so wrong what is done to the Ahmadis and this Governor should be shamed of himself.
JFCC also should be shamed for calling this Governor moderate.
So many people here know the Ahmadi people never hurt anybody but JFCC sing praise for the man who want to be mean to them.

If that kind of bigotry, not much different from ethnic cleansing, is what the ‘mainstream media’ representatives in Jakarta interpret as the views of a ‘moderate Muslim,’ I hate to think how their newspapers and tv channels must be misleading us about what is happening there and in other countries.
      Talk about fake news!
I know you always stick up for the Muslims you socialise with.

Thanks, Uncle Oz. I know you are not in Jakarta but I am replying to you, this morning, to let all readers know that this event has been postponed again. I had another email today to say it will now be held on Friday, tomorrow,at 9am in the Mandarin Oriental.
The reasons for the change is that the Governor is naturally prioritising the earthquake in Lombok over lesser matters.

It intrigues me, Ross, why they sent you this plug for the anti-Ahmadiyah governor. You have for years been banging on in defence of that religious minority. I dont mean that harshly, they are shockingly ill-treated but you are very outspoken in defending them.
Also, I am honestly asking, are these JFCC people real foreign correspondents?
Uninformed comments like they made to show off their guest as more ’moderate’ than he really is makes me wonder if its just a group of Walter Mitty types.
I can imagine some expats like to pretend they are 21st century versions of the journalist Mel Gibson played in Year of Living Dangerously. I lived in Jakarta for years and I know it has an effect on expats.

I was at a function a couple of years ago where they had a stall and I think that’s when I got on their mailing list, Sammy.
Some of their advertised speakers have sounded interesting but as said already, they too often change their dates or times and I enjoy a hectic social life which does not allow for such a carry-on.
I have no idea who or how many are their members.
So far there has been no excuse offered on why they portrayed this man as a moderate.
          We can only speculate. .

Wants To Lock ‘Blasphemers’ Up – Yet He’s A ‘Moderate?’

I remember when I used to see Abdullah Gymnastiar on TV…

    • ———————-
    • ….a man who came across as an engaging sort, a Muslim cleric quite different, very different, from the unpleasant hate-preachers like Sobri Lubis of the FPI, the self-styled ‘Islam Defenders Front…’

    Sobri Lubis

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7RLCXNdKF4  –

….infamous for his ( still on video) exhortation to a mob of rabid savages to ‘kill, kill, kill’ the peaceful Ahmadiyah minority.

A.A. Gym, as he was known, had what you might call home-spun charm, and had a huge following of adoring housewives. That rather collapsed about a dozen years ago when he went Arab, by which, I mean polygamous.

I say ‘went Arab’ because most Indonesians really do abhor the practice.

They think it’s backward and sexist – and who can disagree, since what could be more sexist than allowing men to have multiple spouses, while women are limited to one?.

So we didn’t get to see so much of Gym’s smiling face, until nearly two years ago, when who should pop up as ‘a proponent of the 212 rally.’

The Jakarta Post this week gives us a fairly neutral, arguably timid, description of ‘212’ –a religiously-driven mass protest staged in December 2016 demanding the prosecution of then-Jakarta governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama’

I would have defined it rather more harshly as a gang of Islamist fanatics.

The outlandish anti-Ahok campaign held numerous ‘marches’ – actually shuffles – which brought out all manner of backward bigots onto the streets of Jakarta

The protesters, most of whom were men dressed in white Muslim attire, were heard yelling, “We want a Muslim governor,” “Burn Ahok!” and “Kafir!”   http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2016/10/14/thousands-hard-liners-march-against-ahok.htm

Their goal, the jailing of Ahok for ‘blasphemy’ – and some wanted a lot worse for Ahok than mere jail-time..like Habib Rizieq, ‘grand imam’ of the FPI.

“We encourage the government to process the death penalty for Ahok as soon as possible,” said Rizieq.  http://www.suara.com/news/2016/10/14/134313/

…yes, their goal, when achieved, did horrific damage to Indonesia’s reputation as a pluralist democracy. Decent people of all creeds all over the world were shocked.

One can only view those who instigated ‘212’ as intolerant sectarian extremists who should be excluded from any role in respectable public life, held at arms-length by responsible public figures.

    But today?

Gymnastiar was preaching, not in any back-street zealot hang-out but in Jakarta’s grandest mosque, the Istiqlal, the splendid edifice to which visiting foreign leaders are taken by government high-ups..

…and where on this highest of Islamic holy days the congregants included both Jakarta’s Governor and Indonesia’s Vice-President Jusuf Kalla.

How do preachers at the Istiqlal get selected?

No idea. I imagine there’s a management committee, with some degree of autonomy, which is nevertheless sensitive to what and whom is acceptable in today’s Indonesia.

You’d think anyone associated with ‘212’ would be a definite ‘no-no.’ You’d hope that anyone advocating prison for the bizarre ‘offence’ of ‘blasphemy’ would be kept well away from the pulpit.

    But you’d be SO WRONG!

And here’s the sting in the tail!

    That same Gymnastiar’s name-

was included on the Religious Affairs Ministry’s list of 200 Islamic preachers that are deemed moderate, which was issued last month.”

And that, to those of us who love Indonesia and think religious liberty needs to be defended against Islamist intolerance, is a very depressing statement to ponder as the Idul Fitri festivities go on across the archipelago.

It sounds that Indonesia has changed greatly from the years when I lived in Jakarta and other cities.
It sounds also that the changes are not so great for people who like freedom of religion and of expression.
That is sad news. It was my experience that religion was not a cause of friction, in general.
I hope it will not get to be a more hostile environment for freedom. However all that I read, and not only written by you, makes me pessimistic.

Indonesia Shows Oz and UK How To Handle Hizbut!

Exceedingly good news from Indonesia’s highest court, which just this week affirmed that the government had acted according to procedure and Hizb ut-Tahrir runs counter to Indonesia’s state ideology.

The sectarian fanatic gang was outlawed in accordance with a presidential decree that gives the government powers to disband groups deemed a threat to national unity..

Jakarta court rejects attempt by Hizb ut-Tahrir to reverse its ban

It would be hard to dispute the threat, given that HTI has as its goal the subjection of sovereign nations to a global caliphate with no pretence of democracy.

‘Charlie Hebdo proves how rotten democracy is!’

    HTI hate democracy!

Just like the Communist Party, which has been banned for over fifty years.

PKI Ban – A Good Precedent For HTI?

Also, like similar Islamist outfits, HTI believes that the backward shariah code must trump Indonesian laws.

This latest ruling puts both Australia and Britain in an odd position, because in the past there has been clear recognition in both countries that their local HT califofascists ought to be prohibited.

We’ve reported on the crassly idiotic aspects of HT leaders in both countries…

Demented HT bints tell it like it isn’t – evil Hizbut Tahrir ignoramus, Sydney primary school teacher Reem Allouche telling the women’s arm of hardline political group Hizb ut-Tahrir that men are permitted to hit women with sticks.

…but also on plainly subversive and disloyal declarations by their spokespersons, some of whom were at least honest about their beliefs. Hizbut Tahrir UK – “When ‘Moderates’ Talk of Peace, They’re Lying!”

Cameron capitulated on craven ‘human rights’ grounds, and Theresa May thinks shariah is a blessing.

    She is a hopeless case!

Another T-May Betrayal – Welcome Home, ISIS Terror Pigs!

In Canberra, with Turnsteer big buddies with that ignorant extremist ass the Grand Mufti, a defender of HT…

    Australia, Deport This Sex-Obsessed Sectarian!

Petition · Hizb ut-Tahrir: Call to ban group in Australia · Change.orgPrime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is being urged to ban Islamist extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir from Australia…‘Ex-Muslims should be free from death threats’

But now that the deplorable mufti has gone, thanks be, maybe Turnsteer can be made to notice that HT in Oz continues to behave badly, its imbecilic shrilling an affront to all decent people.

Hizb ut-Tahrir’s Australian leader recently called on the country to become an Islamic state ruled by Islamic law and for a boycott of Anzac Day.    http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/national/australias-generation-jihad-is-homegrown/story-fnii5s41-1226653324521

So about time the two governments,in Canberra and in London, shaped up and slapped down the jihad jerks, or better still, kicked them out.

Having applauded Indonesia, however, let’s not forget that other gangs as bad as, if not worse than Hizbut Tahrir, are still un-banned.

Nightmare – Indonesian IslamoNazis Get Armed Forces Training!

It would be good to see President Jokowi make use of his powers to cut all sectarian gangsters down to size.

Lefty Hackette Echoes Islamists- Don’t Dare Enjoy Beauty!

    • The Leftal, sorry, The Local, is run by a Europhiliac pro-crimmigrant clique, and it looks like their ‘Pet of the Week’ is some English hackette named Evie Taylor-Burrows.

    • =========

    • Evie Burrows-Taylor
    • Hackette Evie – is she just another frothing feminist fanatic or is she jealous of these beautiful young mamselles?

    • =====

    • =

    • She certainly doesn’t like this magnificent photograph!

    • Okay, she’s a pinko kill-joy, and is entitled to her misery-guts ‘opinion,’ which gets oodles of column inches, and knowing The Leftal…

    • =======
    • ========
    • …no similarly verbose rant-space will be afforded to anyone, male or female, who disagrees with her eccentric attitudes.

    • I say ‘eccentric’ advisedly, because she herself admits she’s an oddball, out of step with normal folks, EIGHT MILLION of whom last week tuned into Miss France, or, as Eccentric Evie calls it, the annual degrading beauty pageant.

    • =====
    • ==
    • For any of you who became regular readers of our blog more recently than 2013, it’s relevant to point out that we have a consistent record of defending fun events vilified by bigots as ‘degrading beauty pageants.’

    • Have a look.

    • —-

    • Here in Indonesia, the worst elements in the archipelago went nuts (well, nuttier) when the lovely ladies competing for the Miss World arrived.

    • —–

    • Sectarians here regard women as inferior…

…and deplore any occasion that might honour the God-given beauty of the female form.

    • ============
    • IslamoNazi distaste for beauty pageants may be based on a different ideology from that of Eccentric Evie, but it’s just as deeply steeped in intolerance.

    • E.E. admits that eight million keen viewers is an ‘astounding’ number, but she reckons her narrow-minded outlook trumps their enthusiasm for beauty. How dare they appreciate beauty – the contest millions of French people enjoy must be…

    • …’confined to history!’

    • -But her hysterical animosity towards the pageant, (which is apparently now a real French tradition, in its 88th edition ) actually reveals something deeper, and deeply disturbing –  her concept of what the media should be.

    • One of the most bizarre aspects of the Miss France phenomenon is how much coverage it gets in the mainstream press.

This is the point you start to wonder – is she nuts?

    • An immensely popular pageant, watched with delight by 8,000,000 nice normal French folk…

    • ‘Twould be damned weird if it didn’t!

Some of France’s most respected publications and news sites…dedicate article after article to the contest.

    • All this coverage, only to be expected unless these media were totally out of touch with the public, has a dreadful effect on E.E.- you feel like you have travelled back to the 1950s!

    • If only one could!

    • Back to a France inhabited by French people with shared values, no banlieue alien colonies where decent people – and police officers! – fear to tread alone…

    • …a France where men married women and not each other, a France where foreign courts could not arrogantly forbid the deportation of illegal immigrants…

    • Poor Little Evie. God forbid La Belle France might return to civilised values.

    • But it’s not just the old France that E.E. finds abhorrent.

    • It’s today’s French people!

    • it isn’t just the competition that’s the problem, after all the people behind it aren’t forcing millions of people to tune in…

    • Aha!

    • The mask slips, as the Left’s repugnance towards democracy unveiled once more.

    • =
    • Hasil gambar untuk marxist re-education camp
    • =
    • It’s those millions who need re-education, or so she seems to think!

    • =======

    • You can read the whole horrible rant – https://www.thelocal.fr/20171215/opinion-why-its-time-to-ditch-miss-france – in which she expounds her peculiar belief that there’s a link between all us guys who like looking at gorgeous gals, inside or outside swim-suits, and molestation.

    • As if we switch off the tv once a beauty contest is over, then rush onto the nearest bus and start playing grab-ass with unwilling ladies.

    • Of course we don’t.

    • Modern-minded men all carry a ream of printed ‘grab-ass-consent’ forms, which we ensure all objects of our base admiration first sign before any moves are made.

    • Sorry, that is being facetious about a serious subject – the risks women and girls face on the streets of Europe.

    • =
    • They were all asylum seekers!” Told You So!

    • If Eccentric Evie were not so awfully odd, she might seek to persuade The Leftal’s editorial cabal to campaign against a REAL cause of so much sexual mayhem.

    Religious Liberty – Indonesia Exposed!

These boys converted to Islam just a few months ago.
    “I will protect Islam till I die…”

I felt very sorry for these children, and all the people in their community who have been pushed into apostasy, abandoning their age-old faith, when I watched the BBC programme a couple of days ago.

I had been planning to write something, but now I have found the report on the BBC website, hardly a ‘phobic’ source, and can refer you to the link below the headline.

Indonesia’s Orang Rimba: Forced to renounce their faith

The incidentals in the report are off-putting enough, especially this –

The Islamic Defenders Front – a vigilante group whose leader is facing charges of inciting religious violence – helped facilitate the conversion.

But what is so tragic is this is happening only a week or so after I applauded Indonesia’s Constitutional Court for ruling that the principle of religious liberty applies not only to the major faiths…

Good News – Wow! – For Indonesian Religious Freedom!

….but also to the traditional belief systems that have existed in the archipelago before foreign missionaries introduced the currently dominant creeds.

It would be nice to rail against this theological blitz-krieg, but I prefer to let you peruse what the BBC has uncovered…

…as I look out the front door onto my sunny Jakarta yard and wonder why, every time I run across some hopeful news, something comes along soon after to dash those hopes.

Next Indonesian V-P – Another General ‘Close To’ Fanatics?

So Metrotvnews.com tells us that the National Democrat Party has begun to eye TNI Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo as a running-mate for President Jokowi in the next presidential election? The news item adds that Gatot is believed to be able to attract votes from Muslims, especially the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI).

It’s not unusual for high-ranking soldiers in many countries to look at politics as a suitable change of career.

Think back to Eisenhower and De Gaulle.

But after the shock many people got when Jokowi decided to share a platform with the FPI’s leader, Habib Rizieq, who openly asserted that Jakarta’s ex-governor Ahok should be put to death for ‘blasphemy…

“We encourage the government to process the death penalty for Ahok as soon as possible,” said Rizieq.  http://www.suara.com/news/2016/10/14/134313/

Rizieq, far-left, listens contentedly to Jokowi’s speech

So Has Indonesia Come To This? Paradise Lost?

…when instead the President could have confronted that sectarian fanatic, it’s alarming that General Gatot’s alleged ability to win the approval of Rizieq’s thug-gang is seen as a big plus.

Hasil gambar untuk gatot nurmantyo jokowi

“Close to the Islamic community, close to FPI, etc. It is good to fill the space…”  So says a political analyst with  Indonesia Political Review (IPR) who added that Gatot ”is also  close to the scholars!”

When that word ‘scholars‘ is used here, it doesn’t just mean people who study a lot, or even a little!

It refers to the MUI, the Indonesian Council of Scholars, a frequent source of outlandish intolerance, whose outbursts we’ve covered aplenty.

Bali Hindu King – Don’t Kill Our Cows! Muslim ‘Scholars’ – Get Lost!!

Islamist ‘Scholars’ – “Don’t Complain if You’re Attacked!”

Syamsul Maarif,  General Secretary of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Jakarta

“If the act of adultery is by a married person, then stoning is the sentence, while if unmarried, then it’s whipping,” he said.

    • …...

Who knows if this predicted pairing will come to pass?

But what’s worrying is the alleged closeness of the country’s top officer with violent, lawless bigots.

One hopes the assertion is unfounded.  General Gatot Nurmantyo has yet to issue any denial, so far as I know.

Whatever, it is a matter of public interest, not least in the light of that exculpation of the white-shirt gang reported some months ago, from Indonesia’s top cop, General Tito Karnavian, who praised Rizieq!

“He was very tolerant actually… FPI is an Islamic organization so very tolerant of other religions,” he added.

    Gambar terkait

Video Viral, Tito Karnavian: FPI Ormas Islam yang Sangat Toleran

That assessment of the gang and its leader parked a storm of protest.

Many good Indonesians, including millions of Muslims, were and are dismayed at the very thought of the FPI or any sectarian cliques having friends in high places.

Just about to tuck into bacon and eggs so am catching up on your blog. I didnt look in much last week because I was very busy.
      This is a worry.
I hope the general does make a speech or says something to show everybody he is not close to the FPI. There is a lot of unrest about at the moment.

Kasihan, Jakarta, Sayangku – What A Pity, Beloved City!

Given how the words ‘hate-speech’ have been devalued in the Western world, by imbeciles like Britain’s Surrey Police, whose ‘Hate Crime Procedure…’

...says ‘apparent lack of motivation as the cause of an incident is not relevant as it is the perception of the victim or any other person that counts’. No clear hateful motivation? Doesn’t matter. Record it as a hate crime anyway.

    Britain’s real hate crime scandal

…it’s interesting to note the widespread outrage over the newly installed Governor of Jakarta’s astounding outburst this week.

Being a lazy fellow, I have decided to build my comments around what ‘The Australian’ newspaper reported, that Anies Baswedan used his first speech in office to urge “native” Jakartans to take back the Indonesian capital.

Not at all surprisingly, this sparked concern among the city’s ethnic Chinese community…

The word Baswedan chose, pribumi, is common here and has a very specific meaning – indigenous.

It is always used to differentiate between Chinese ethnic people and the majority, who are mostly of Melayu   (Malay) ethnicity.

Hasil gambar untuk milik pribumi 1998

One of many Jakarta shops marked by their owners as ‘pribumi property’ in an effort to preserve them from looting during the 1998 anti-Chinese race riots

There has always been some anti-Chinese racism around Jakarta, which we have noted from time to time.

Jakarta Jew-Haters Boo Chinese Christian Candidate

We whites, who are mostly not citizens anyway, are bule, literally albino! Nobody I know gives a damn about being called a bule, We often use it to refer to ourselves!

Admittedly I was a bit miffed when house-hunting a few years ago, to be told that one owner would under no circumstances have a bule tenant…

…but, unlike the ‘discrimination’ whiners in The Old Country, my attitude was that he owned the property and if he wished to behave stupidly, he had every right to be stupid.

If I had to hire a secretary, I’d certainly discriminate, offering the job to somebody, anybody…

…who looks like the Indonesian songstress Dewi Perssik, before anyone else, no matter how secretarially qualified!

    But that’s just me.

Anies Baswedan now runs all Jakarta!

“In Jakarta, colonialism is right in front of our eyes, felt in everyday lives.”

“In the old days, all of us pribumi (natives) were oppressed and defeated. Now after independence, it is time for us to be the masters of our land,” he said, as people in the crowd punched the air and shouted –

    “Allah is Great.” .http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/new-jakarta-chief-stirs-ethnic-tensions-on-first-day-in-office/news-story/

Of course they didn’t shout ‘Allah is Great.’ They wouldn’t be shouting in English. The sort who love to shout prefer Arabic! What the reporters, and everyone else, heard was ‘ALLAHU AKBAR,’ words which cause an emotional response in Western lands and now, it seems, here too.

    View image on Twitter

Anies Baswedan wins a smile from FPI ‘grand imam,’ Habib Rizieq

If Anies had been ranting thus at a meeting of his fanatic fans in the FPI, a violent Islamist gang which he courted eagerly during his election campaign, one might expect much such hollering.

But at his first speech as Governor?

At least people now know what to expect, if they hadn”t already! Even that Australian reporter knows Anies’ record well enough to describe him as –

    the former moderate Muslim!’

The report mentions that Baswedan was once Rector of Paramadina University, which I passed on my bus last month. It’s long had a good reputation as a place where REAL moderate Muslims are abundant,

There’s a quote from a lecturer there, saying the use of the word was “inappropriate.”

That’s not a word I like to hear in such discussions. Right or Wrong, okay, or neither, but ‘inappropriate?’   Something of a cop-out term.

But the lecturer is correct when he added  that –

“The atmosphere in Jakarta is very different now compared to before the election and the term ‘pribumi’ could spark tension. We cannot blame those who took offence at this speech..”

And a former minister and human rights advocate described the speech as a “disaster” guaranteed to “open old wounds.”

I prefer the more robust observations from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies researcher, Tobias Basuki…

    Hasil gambar untuk tobias basuki

…who defined the new governor’s words as “alienating, especially coming from him and his track record in the election. It’s quite obvious that he’s excluding Chinese Indonesians because that’s the narrative that propelled him into office.”

Inevitably, Baswedan – who’s no fool – is now claiming he was looking back at those wicked imperialists, the Dutch!

Who faced the Dutch up close? Jakartans,” he said.

“If we look at people in the countryside, they know about the Dutch. But do they face them up close? No. The bottom line is I was talking about the Dutch colonial rule.”

Best not to think what non-Jakarta pribumi, from Aceh to Bali, who put up spirited resistance to Holland, might want to say to that!

But Dutch colonial rule ended nearly seventy years ago! What tense, past or present, was Baswedan using to make Islamist bigots holler ‘Allahu Akbar?

What was that word he used?

Some Chinese Indonesians may say that we bule are fortunate, because, when the current Creeping Shariah escalates into a nightmare stampede, we can leave, easily, whereas this is their country, in which they’ve lived for centuries.

But despite the horrified responses from decent Indonesians, including many pribumi, there’s no way I can feel fortunate.

It won’t be that long till I have been here twenty years, and I love Jakarta, never imagined how far and fast the fanatics would become major players in the political game.

When Islamist zealotry intertwines with paeans of ethnic triumphalism, it’s hard to find reasons not to be gloomy.

Final quote, from one of the banners on show along the governor’s convoy route to City Hall on Monday night, hailing Mr Anies’s election as a “symbol of the awakening of the indigenous Muslims…”

    Time to read something else…

    Gambar terkait

…a bit of Western literature, perhaps, before my pleasant (and pribumi!) guest arrives!

I was wondering when you would get round to Anies Baswedan, Ross.

From the top down there is nobody up for the fight that’s needed to stop the FPI and the other hate groups.
I won’t stick around to watch the end.

Jokowi To Ban Islamist Hizbut Tahrir – Why Stop There?

While the Government ponders banning the caliphascist Hizbut Tahrir movement, because it is openly hostile to democracy, its aspiration to subjugate Indonesia to supranational sectarian rule…

Hizbut Tahrir – ‘Charlie Hebdo, Proof  of How Rotten Democracy Is…’

…we now read that the notorious FPI ( self-styled ‘Defenders of Islam Front’) has also asserted its belief in the restoration of the Islamic Caliphate, which, to the delight of civilised people around the world, was overthrown at the end of the First World War.

Kemal Ataturk ended the Turkish Sultanate – the sultans were the ipso facto caliphs, claiming command over every Muslim in the world.

I refer readers to the report from last month, in Jakarta, where the infamously mysogynist FPI gauleiter….

IslamoNazi Gauleiter – “Women Already Have Limitations, Let Alone Non-Muslims!”

…Habib Novel Chaidir Bamukmin, told the media that, although the caliphate was not the top priority, it was nevertheless something they wanted.

This fanatic has several fancy titles, Netralnews.com tells us, including ‘Vice Chairman of the Team of Defenders of Ulama and Activists (TPUA)’ but let’s skip that for today.

Let’s focus on how HNCB compared the long-banned (and rightly so) Communist Party of Indonesia  – PKI – with his much admired ‘khilafah‘ sectarians.

“What was the PKI solution? Just slaughter, coup, divide the nation.”

Very true. Communists are totalitarian evil-doers. But he continues.

What has the Khilafah harmed? Never did anything anarchistic, let alone rebel, let alone slaughter, ” he explained.

Is this Habib qualified to define ‘anarchistic?’

    Maybe he is?

Habib Novel, one of the leaders of FPI’s Jakarta chapter, is finally facing trial at the Central Jakarta District Court for organizing and leading the violent protest. And the police are ready should another violent protest take place today.

FPI leader Habib Novel on trial for violent protest,

Exactly what was the verdict and/or sentence in that trial?

Does organizing and leading a violent protest count as anarchistic?

I leave it to readers to check out those questions.

His remarks arose from the recent demo at the House of Representatives, called ‘Action 299,’ which illogically wanted the PKI kept banned but the HTI remain unbanned, although both are quintessentially hostile to democracy.

And while the prospect of an Islamist global tyranny may not be a priority for him, it seems to have been for many of the other ranters that day, as the reporter tells us …interestingly, each of their speeches always ended with shouting “Khilafah! Khilafah! Khilafah!”

Bizarrely, the fanatics at the demo were also heard to sing the song Garuda Pancasila.

Pancasila, for overseas readers, is the state ideology of Indonesia, which is basically a set of democratic pluralist ideas. Nothing could be further from the horrid despotism that a Hizbut Tahrir regime would inflict on Indonesia.

Again, Islamist ranters invoking Pancasila remind us of Communist ranters yelling about the rights of the downtrodden.

Both dangerous cliques, both deploying deceitful slogans, sectarian fanatics mouthing off as if they cared about tolerance, marxist fanatics pretending to care about workers and peasants.

    Banning both is best.
