Jakarta’s Bizarre ‘Blasphemy’ Trial – Frozen Till AFTER Votes Counted?

So there’s been a call from the police for the North Jakarta
District Court suggesting them to postpone the religious blasphemy trial involving Ahok?

Sounds like Tempo’s standard of English grammar is declining towards Jakarta Post level.

Even my former teenage students would have known to write ‘suggesting that they postpone…’

    But skip it.

Why are the police taking this extraordinary step?

Well, Metro Jaya Police Sr. Comr. Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono has told Tempo why.

Argo explained that the letter was issued in an effort to maintain security and order in Jakarta, and to allow preparation for the upcoming gubernatorial election to run smoothly.

“Considering that the trial will be held close to the voting day, there are possibilities of mass mobilization. Therefore, [the letter] was issued to minimize such possibilities…”

Police Urge Court to Postpone Ahok Trial

What’s surely most important is that Ahok gets a fair trial – to the extent that anyone going on trial for an offence as absurd as ‘blasphemy’ can get a fair trial…

     – and that he knows what fate awaits him ASAP…as soon as possible!

If the court rules that he’s innocent, then that will obviously impact on his electoral prospects.

Sectarian savages will never vote for him, but thanks be, they are a minority…

Jakarta Mosque – Yellow-Bellies Bash, Spit On, Journos!

….but a lot of everyday people, confused by ignoramus propaganda, will be much more likely to come out and cast their ballots for him if he’s acquitted.  .

If, and any system that can put a man on trial for ‘blasphemy’ can just as easily find him guilty, IF Ahok is found guilty, it will harm his chances.

No matter the logic or morality of the case, a guilty verdict would hurt him. Rational people may ignore such mediaeval stuff, but a lot of Jakartans have little education and might think that a conviction for ‘blasphemy’ in the 21st century actually means something to our good Governor’s discredit.

But EITHER way, surely the citizens of Jakarta – and Ahok himself – deserve to know the judicial score, BEFORE they vote?

If there are indeed what Pak Argo calls possibilities of mass mobilization – and I dare say he’s right – then the police officers on duty are surely entitled to use every means at their disposal…

Breaking News – Jakarta Cops Tear-Gas Islamist Louts!

….to quell the sort of Islamist hoodlum thuggery we saw at the other anti-Ahok ‘Long Marches’ (aka fanatic shufflings!)

I agree with you, Ross, and the court does too, or so says the Jakarta Post today

Prosecutors are expected to make their sentence demand next Tuesday and Ahok is scheduled to read out his defense statement on April 17, just two days before voting in the runoff to Jakarta’s gubernatorial election.

Even so, Ahok will still be kept waiting till after the election which I hope he wins.
If he doesn’t, I foresee Jakarta turning into a drab sharia city and I will be moving after even more years here than you.

Media Coverage of Islamist Louts – JG Trounces JP!

A most peculiar, patchy piece in the Jakarta Post this week, on how deputy gubernatorial candidate Djarot Saiful Hidayat faced hostile opposition from supporters of his gubernatorial election rivals while attending an anniversary prayer for late former president Soeharto….

Djarot is on the left, Ahok on the right

Djarot is the running mate of Governor Ahok – the pluralist Christian seeking re-election next month. Ahok is hated by all the vilest sectarian elements here, and is currently on trial for the mediaeval offence of’blasphemy.’

One prominent Islamist bigot has demanded the DEATH PENALTY!

But let’s continue with the JP report. I won’t simply repeat it word for word but the link will confirm I am paraphrasing it faithfully.

…an unidentified protester threw a bottle…some protesters pursued him while hurling verbal abuse…some protesters even trying to block his access to the mosque….

Atrocious antics, deserving serious, thorough investigation. Yet the JP reporters do NOT identify the hoodlums, apart from that vague reference to ‘supporters of rivals.’

    Compare and contrast.

So WHO were the loutish trouble-makers? The Jakarta Post’s rival English-language paper, the Jakarta Globe, has incurred my disapproval in the past…

…but does a far better job, with its report on the same disgraceful hoodlum display.

Members of several Muslim groups intercepted incumbent Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat while on his way to attend an Islamic prayer to commemorate the issuance of the controversial Supersemar, or March 11 Decree…

    • Protestors loudly yelled abuse and the word “infidel” at Djarot…
    • So it was not a manifestation of political conflict but of naked sectarian hatred.  http://eyewitness.thejakartaglobe.com/news/protestors-try-to-prevent-djarot-from-attending-supersemar-commemoration/
    • And another thing!
    • That ceremony Djarot was attending?
    • The Jakarta Post’s description – ‘ an anniversary prayer for late former president Soeharto’  – is more than a little economical with the facts of the occasion.
    • It gives the impression that it was merely a commemoration of the dictator’s life or of his death.
    • NOT SO! The Jakarta Globe spells out the truth!
    • .The mass prayer was held to commemorate the issuance of the Supersemar letter, which transferred authority from the country’s founding father, Sukarno, to Suharto, who was the chief of the Army in 1966.
    • ————–

General Suharto – the beneficiary of ‘Supersemar’

Every Indonesian knows about that episode.

Some regard it as a good day for the country, after Soekarno’s erratic regime and his constant flirtation of the evil totalitarians of the PKI – the Communist Party of Indonesia.

But many also see it as the moment when Suharto’s iron rule began, an end to democracy and the start of a dictatorship which lasted for for over thirty years.

Regardless, that’s what last Saturday’s event was all about.

As an interesting foot-note to the above, the list of those present at the Supersemar get-together includes none other than the very man we mentioned above but did not name, the blood-thirsty fanatic who reckons Djarot’s running-mate, our good Governor Ahok, deserves death for a qitty reference to the Koran.

    Now we name him.

Habib Rizieq godfather of the self-styled ‘Defenders of Islam!’

“We encourage the government to process the death penalty for Ahok as soon as possible,” said Rizieq.  http://www.suara.com/news/2016/10/14/134313/

With Huge Support From Decent Muslims, Ahok Fights On!

Looks like Ahok has got over forty percent of the votes in Jakarta’s gubernatorial election.

    • ahok
    • oooooooooooooooo
    • Facing a second round, in the absence of the 50% he needs, he will now be up against Anies, who distinguished himself this month by winning the smile of the fanatic who wants to see Ahok put to death for quoting from the Koran.

    oooooooooooooooooooooooooooView image on Twitter

    • I’m certainly not saying that all those who voted for either of the rival candidates did so because of bigotry.
    • There are numerous reasons why people mark ballot papers one way or the other.
    • But I do say that all those many, many Muslims here in Jakarta who voted for Ahok showed maturity and character by refusing to heed the vile sectarian howling that threatened to drown out debate during the campaign…
    • …..
    • .devil destroyed
    • ……..
    • ….the deranged assertion that they dare not vote for somebody  – anybody – who doesn’t follow their particular religious path.

Without the votes of so many Muslims, Ahok could not have secured more than ten percent of the Jakarta electorate, at the most!

Such support for a man under attack by every evil element in the archipelago gives hope to all of us who love Indonesia and wish her well.

Wow! Jakarta Debate – Ira Koesno Ain’t No Rotten Raddatz!

I tuned into the debate last night.

The Jakarta gubernatorial election debate that is, and purely by accident, because it was on Trans TV and I was waiting to see which one of their tiresome repeats they’d present as our weekend treat. In the end it turned out be A Man Apart.

I enjoyed that the first time I saw it, some years ago.

    Now…not so much.

    Can’t Trans TV do better?

But whilst awaiting cinematic delights, it was interesting to watch Ahok taking on his two rivals, and nice to see a cheering crowd of supporters among the studio audience.

Interesting also to learn that some 1700 police officers had been detailed to make sure all went safely, a wise precaution when so many Islamist fanatics have been heard demanding his death for no rational reason.

So Has Indonesia Come To This? Paradise Lost?

The debate wasn’t as much fun as any of those Trump-Clinton clashes!

Yet the moderator was a lot less biased than some of those individuals who filled that role in the recent US presidential election debates – one of those got all boo-hoo, when it was clear Trump was winning!

Almost needless to say, ABC’s Martha Raddatz denied it!

But you can be the judge!

As for the Indonesian debate, I won’t say which candidate was most persuasive, as I only saw part of it.

That lady doing the moderating, however, was downright impressive, telling the turbulent fans, of all sides, to pipe down or the show would not go on!

And who was this paragon of imperious impartiality?

    Ira Koesno!

English readers might like to know that she is apparently a Chelsea supporter!

Incredibly, she is also forty seven years old, which you may or may not believe, but I can assure you that the photo above is an reflection of her appearance.

    She’s drop-dead gorgeous!

And living proof of what I have often said, that Indonesian women are among the most lovely in the world..
