      You say it very well, Ross, how mean they are with stupid rules when the only rule should be rule we make for ourselves.
      This is because fasting is CHOOSE not to eat, not order by scholar who think he knows God better then we do,
      Same like stupid curtain.to make us not see eating. If we CHOOSE not to eat then we do not need stupid curtain to make us keep our promise to us.

      Stupid curtain.and stupid scholar and stupid politician like so many in Aceh who will pretend to be holy but still corrupt and steal money from poor people.

      I will fast because I can and I will and not because they make me.
      You and everyone can fast or not, Indonesia is NOT Iran or Arab Saudi.

    Ramadhan Begins! Sectarian Reminders Issued!

    “Based on all the input we received, we decided that the first day of Ramadhan will fall on Monday, June 6,” Lukman Hakim told reporters at a press conference.  http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2016/06/05/indonesia-declares-ramadhan-beginsmonday.html

    I do wish my Muslim friends and neighbours a Happy Ramadhan.

    But off we go again, those silly little curtains erected across the front of street food stalls, like my little warteg where I usually go for a filling two-dollar lunch…

    warteg

    ….

    ...a peculiar fanatic folly, as if passing Muslims will forget their fasting if they catch sight of me tucking into perkadel, tempe, tahu pare, etc.

    In fact, it will enhance their virtuous self-denial if they see me eating, because what sort of commitment to abstinence is it, what sort of will-power do they need to muster, if alternatives are hidden from their gaze?

    The same point arises in respect of Lukman’s further words.

    The minister also called on owners of entertainment businesses, especially nightclubs, to temporarily close or adjust the running of their businesses during Ramadhan to respect the fasting month.

    Why on earth should they close?

    That’s not ‘respect’ but a kow-tow!

    Not every Muslim feels like experiencing a month of tedium. And Jakarta has large minorities of Christians, Buddhists etc. who are not fasting at all!

    As mentioned in past posts, the late President Gus Dur, a noted Islamic scholar, had a healthier perspective, viz.

    ———–

    • gus dur fasting

    ‘If we fasting Muslims want respect, let us also respect those who aren’t fasting.’

    ===

    In other words, live and let live!

    If you don’t want to eat and drink and have fun, fine, but it’s outrageous to tell others, who do want to carry on as normal, that they may not.

    ———–

    • main-lukman-hakim4

    Minister of Religion Lukman

    ————

    • Lukman is a fairly sensible minister, a huge improvement on his predecessor, the notorious Suryadharma Ali, whom we used to report on all too often.

    Ali1 Ali

    Good Indonesians Denounce ArchBigot Ali’s Latest Intolerant Outburst

    oooooooooo

    But whatever Lukman thinks himself, he has many intolerants to reckon with, not merely the IslamoNazi hoodlum gangs like the FPI…

    ……

    FPI_13

    IslamoNazi FPI louts practicing devout introspection at a previous Ramadhan

    ——–

    …but also the state-sponsored self-styled ‘scholars’ of the MUI, whose leaders talk against violence but can then engage in verbal diarrhoea like this. .

    Islamist ‘Scholars’ – “Don’t Complain if You’re Attacked!”

    So we just have to put up with the sectarian shut-downs, though not without complaint – I’ll be recording some of the antics in the weeks ahead.

    But here’s what’s most disturbing about Lukman’s statement.

    “I also remind the media to support the government’s mission to preserve harmony during the holy month,” he added.

    Well, some of the media are under year-round censorship here. Even the film ‘Noah’ was outlawed…

    Noah’ Banned – Who’s Next? State Censors or Sectarian Enforcers?

    … and in the past, the MUI have used the state censor board as a cypher to apply their prudery.

    Dimana Bokong2nya? – Where Are Our Buttocks?

    But exactly what does the Minister means about the media’s role?

    That merits further study. I’ll be back.

    A VERY Good Muslim Lady Breakfasts in Java!

    I missed this news item from a few weeks ago, but it demands attention, so people overseas get a fairer impression of Indonesia.

    Sinta Nuriyah is a devout Muslim, the widow of President Gus Dur, who was not only Head of State here but an outstanding Islamic scholar – a real scholar, not one of those ranters we read about too often from the MUI.  http://www.asianews.it/news-en/Indonesian-Ulema-in-favour-of-female-circumcision:-a-human-right-26948.html

    ===============

    • ===================
    • And she declared her intention to break her fast one morning last month with the victims of IslamoNazi persecution, the Ahmadi religious minority “Our Prayers Disturbed His!” Pluralism in Jokowi’s Jakarta?   in a show of solidarity with the oppressed.
    • The event was inclusive of the mainstream Muslim body, the Nahdlatul Ulama, Ahmadis, Shia…also a number of religious leaders, Christian, Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Confucian. In addition to maintaining inter-religious harmony, the event was aimed at helping orphans and people facing economic hardship….

    A pity our current President Jokowi doesn’t invite some Ahmadis to join him for a similar event at his Palace downtown!

    But it’s not just Sinta’s actions, but the location that stood out in the Tempo.com report. She was making her point in Central Java’s Wonosobo Regency, right next door to Temanggung, where, in fact, she’d stopped off prior to her Wonosobo breakfast.

    ==========================================

    • Hasil gambar untuk wonosobo temanggung

    ============================

    And that proximity highlights the kulturkampf that afflicts Indonesia’ Muslims – the Javanese tradition of live and let live, on the one hand – I often have Javanese Muslims as welcome guests in my home –  and, on the other hand, the determination by very unpleasant elements to Arabise the land.

    IslamoNazi Slams Jew-Collaborating Fascists Who Say ‘Good Morning!’

    ————————————————————————–

    • devil destroyed
    • Such elements seek to drag Indonesia into the dark realm of shrouded women, subjugated minorities and heinous crimes against so-called ‘apostates’ and ‘blasphemers,’ respectively people who think for themselves how they should or should not worship, and those who acknowledge that God is Great but religion should be open to criticism. .

    Wonosobo has a deserved reputation for religious tolerance.

    But not Temanggung! A few years ago it was the scene of some of the most disgraceful sectarian mayhem Indonesia has witnessed.

    Filthy savages ran amok in blasphemous attacks on Christian churches, the spark for the primitives’ riot being a court verdict.

    A Statue of Jesus Among the Rubble in Temanggung Statue of Jesus vandalised by blasphemous swine

    In a blasphemy case!

    The poor guy in the dock had done nothing particularly serious, but the blood-thirsty bigot mob wanted him put to death!

    And when the terrified judge issued the maximum sentence allowed, five years, they boiled over, their ugly hate made manifest all over town.

    =========

    ————-

    The judge had to do a runner to escape their vicious vengeance!

    You can read about it here     .

    Security forces had to turn out in strength to restore order, but when the ring-leader was brought to justice, he only got a slap on the wrist, and is out and about again, no doubt still busily inciting hatred.

    And these sectarian gangster-groups are not above crossing provincial boundaries if there are innocent victims to be had.

    So all the more should Sinta, an old and infirm lady, ever-ready to show good will to all and let her voice be heard, deserve applause for her decency and guts. Her late husband must be proud of her.

    A cautionary tale for those who make unwarranted generalisations about Muslims.

    Islamist Bigot – “Why Should the Majority Respect the Minority?”

    “Why should the majority respect the minority?” Ali Badri Zaini, the head of the East Java chapter of the Islamic Dakwah Forum..

    …….

    • Ratusan Habaib se-Jatim Deklarasi Dukung Prabowo
    • ==================

    “The minority should respect the majority. The minister is [talking] nonsense. The Islamic faithful in East Java will never do as he instructs.”

    He said it was considered customary for all warung to at least close off their façade with a tarp so as not to tempt those who were fasting.

    Wow!

    Temptation!?!

    —————-

    main-lukman-hakim4 Lukman

    ——–

    This arrogant bigot is up in arms because Minister of Religious Affairs Lukman last week tweeted an appeal for MUTUAL tolerance. His words, on the need for mutual respect and understanding for those who were not fasting, echoed the late President Gus Dur.

    —-

    gus dur fasting

    ‘We Muslims should fast with respect for those not fasting.’ -A REAL Muslim scholar, the late President Gus Dur

    Regardless of the specific fasting issue, it’s hard to see how anyone could respect such a rabid ranter as Ali Badri Zaini.

    But he is only one of many enemies of tolerance here.

    Jazuli Jawani, a legislator from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), said Lukman’s call for those who were fasting to respect those who were not was highly regrettable.

    ——————————————————-

    • Jazuli argued that it was only natural for those “carrying out the faith” to be granted greater respect than those who were not…

    http://thejakartaglobe.beritasatu.com/news/ministers-call-mutual-respect-ramadan-elicits-conservative-backlash/

    No it’s not. Those who are fasting only have to show a bit of self-discipline.

    ——–

    • FPI_13
    • ———–

    Those who are not fasting risk the brutal intimidation we often feature here, meted out by fanatic savages like the IslamoNazi FPI.

    And how dare any member of the PKS talk about any statement from anyone being highly regrettable – has Jazuli forgotten his party leader’s sickening ode to the mass-murder Osama Bin Laden? Written AFTER 9/11?

    =========

    anisAnis Matta

    -=———————————–

    osama_bin_satan mass-murdering beast Bin Laden

    ————————–

    That’s regrettable!

    But we can dismiss Zainal and Jazuli as outlandish extremists, singing from the same song-sheet as the IslamoNazis…...non-Muslim citizens who aren’t fasting, Zainal added, should take care not to disturb the sanctity of Ramadan. Especially eating and drinking in front of others at places open to public view…      http://nasional.news.viva.co.id/news/read/638009/fpi-janji-tak-lakukan-sweeping-saat-ramadhan That’s another Zainal,  Zainal Abidin Petir, FPI Gauleiter in Central Java.

    Nevertheless, the same triumphalist tripe has just emerged from the Deputy Governor of Jakarta echoes this intolerance –  Djarot Saiful Hidayat also urged restaurants to install curtains on their windows during Ramadhan in order to respect those who are fasting. –http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2015/06/15/jakarta-administration-and-residents-prepare-ramadhan.html

    Respect again. Beause they’re fasting, everyone else has to hide behind a curtain? And bars have to be closed? Because fasters might be tempted?

    What’s self-denial worth in moral merit, if there’s not a scent or sight of anything one’s supposed to be denying oneself?

    And how contemptuous these Islamist extremists are, of those they purport to represent!

    Not all Muslims fast, by any means – it’s up to them, after all – but of those who do, it bespeaks a commitment that they choose to make.

    Not eating during daylight hours is no serious hardship, but going thirsty, in this climate, is no fun. Yet they undertake to do so, and a lot of them stick to it. I can admire such tenacity.

    But it’s a personal choice. Their personal choice. It should not impinge on anyone else.

    Do bleating blow-hards like the Zainals really think that fasters will be subverted by the sight of me or anyone else sitting in my fave warteg having a plate of perkadel?

    00

    warteg

    00

    Sure, if I held out my plate enticingly, like one of Odysseus’ sirens, urging some poor faster to share my delight.

    Tempting then like that would be mean, but nobody does that.

    If some fasters walk by a bar and – inexplicably! – choose to peer nosily into its dimly-lit interior, and catch sight of me with a cold Bintang? Is either Zainal seriously saying the devout will at once cast off their self-control and rush in to join me in a binge?

    • bintang
    • Sure, if I sent out some lightly-clad bar-girl, extolling the joys of a cool quaff on a torrid arvo.

    Tempting them like that would be mean, but nobody’s going to do that.

    The killjoys’ case is codswallop.

    And they know it!

    000000

    Jackboot

    0000

    Their only aim is to make minorities bow down. As Ali Badri Zainal, more honestly than the rest, indeed, puts it!

    “Why Should the Majority Respect the Minority?”

    But there’s always a silver lining in these stories, and in this one it’s an off-the-cuff remakr by one of Lukman’s critics, a legislator from ex-President SBY’s party.

    —-

    Khatibul Umam Wiranu, a member of the Democratic Party, accused Lukman of trying to curry popular support through the media through statements like his call for mutual respect. .

    Which means that Khatibul, at least, perceives that’ popular support’ accrues to leaders who publicly espouse decency, and not to intolerant undesirables.

    As Ramadan Looms -‘Scholars’ Claim “Only We Can Call Other People Infidels!”

    fatwa mui sholeh Self-righteously fatwa-ing since 1975!

    ————

    As Ramadan approaches, a month meant to be devoted to introspection and self-discipline but often marred by fanatic hoodlums who fan out to intimidate innocent people…Convicted IslamoNazi Thug Defies Cops, Promises Routine Ramadan Mayhem .and ‘Respect for Ramadhan?’ Sectarian Louts Spit On Girl, Beat Up Her Brother! ...the MUI, that august body of Indonesian ‘scholars,’ has just arrogated to itself the right to insult others on religious grounds.

    …only government-recognized Islamic organizations, such as itself, should be able to call any people or groups kafir, or infidels...: http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2015/06/12/scholars-and-activists-slam-mui-kafir-edict.html

     This priceless privilege has been proclaimed after what the Jakarta Post daintily describes as the MUI’s ‘Edict Commission‘ held a get-together in Tegal, a city in Central Java more usually noted as being the origin of the word ‘warteg‘ (warung Tegal) which simply means a Tegal eatery.

    • ——-
    • warteg
    • ===========
    • These admirable little places are ubiquitous here, and as regular readers of RRA know, I am an afficionado of their simple but cheap and tasty cuisine.
    • But let’s just savour food for thought this fine sunny morning!

    So these ‘scholars’ alone may confer ‘infidel’ status upon me? Who gives a monkey’s?

    I get called lots of names, usually by yellow-belly pinkos, like the poofter who (pseudonymously, of course! ) urged me to die last year. It probably added ten years to my life, the amount of healthy laughter I enjoyed from sharing that little tantrum-tale with friends over beers!

    However, according to the JP,  the edict aka fatwa is meant to prevent individuals from easily calling others kafir, a word that is usually considered highly offensive by the people or groups so labeled.

    That’s the trouble, of course, the way uptights here (and elsewhere) get so easily upset about religion, their tiresome whining about ‘hurt feelings’ that often serve as a pretext for disgraceful hooliganism or worse.

    fpi kill busddhist

    Grown-ups, of course, don’t suffer from the ‘hurt-feelings’ syndrome, or if they do, they just get on with their daily routines, having been brought up on the ‘sticks and stones’ philosophy which characterises a civilised society.

    Unfortunately, not all adults in Indonesia can handle normal life, and instead shrill and bleat when others talk without forked tongues.

    • ======
    • ahok
    • Ahok

    Our rather good Governor Ahok, here in Jakarta, is given to telling it like it is, and thus has had quite a few immature individuals waxing incandescent at his audacity in so doing.–

    habib salimx   Salim Alatas, Jakarta FPI Gauleiter –

    “He is not a Muslim and he is too arrogant, his words are rude and he calls people names!”

    —————–

    But to be fair to the MUI, they claim this fatwa is meant to maintain harmony.   “The edict was issued because there are tendencies in our society to underestimate the word kafir and to easily call a person or a group of people kafir.”

    zaitunrasmin

    MUI’s Zaitun

    So says Muhammad Zaitun, the MUI spokesman, explaining that “labeling of a kafir is a religious law that individuals or illegitimate organizations cannot do,”  adding that Islamic society should refrain from easily labeling others and should take moderate stances instead.”

    Fair enough, ‘moderate stances‘ sound very nice, but then labelling alternative sources of opinion as ‘illegitimate‘ sounds a tad ‘immoderate,’ if not downright insulting, does it not?

    A bit like ‘Papal Infallibility,’  a doctrine which equally offends my Ulster-Scots Protestant soul.

    The FPI or the MUI or the FUI or ISIS can stick as many kafir labels on me as they wish. It’s none of their business what I or anyone else believes…but hey, label away, just so long as they don’t try to prevent me worshipping or thinking or saying or doing anything else I feel like, within the law.

    Those choices, after all, are what God gave us a brain for, to decide for ourselves…

    —-

    …oh, and speaking of which, ‘moderate stances,‘ that is – maybe Zaitun could have a discreet word, prior to the start of Ramadan next week, with another senior MUI figure, namely Amidhan.

    —————

    • Amidhan-MUI-2011
    • ——————-
    • His idea of a ‘moderate stance’ was amply exemplified not that long ago, when he infamously warned people to bow to his intolerant expectations during Ramadan –

    Islamist ‘Scholars’ – “Don’t Complain if You’re Attacked!”

    – or else not complain if sectarian ignoramuses beat them up!

    If the MUI is seriously interested in taking a ‘moderate stance,’ let them issue a fatwa telling their fans NOT to shut down other people’s entertainments during Ramadan…

    If a faster can’t walk past somebody having lunch without succumbing, their claim to be devout is threadbare!
