Jakarta – Fanatic Arrested – No Tears Here!

A little whiff of irony, maybe, to read the story of Munarman…

..till recently a senior figiure in the now-outlawed sectarian vigilante gang that oddly styled itself the ‘Islam Defenders Front…’

…in The Diplomat, of all publications!

Far from diplomacy, the characteristic that springs to mind when I think of the lawyer closely associated with  Rizieq the Fanatic is tantrum-throwing.

Munarman’s deplorable behaviour, live on tv, a few years ago, when I dubbed him Munarman the Lout…

….one of various incidents which we have mentioned more than once, and which did not result in jail-time…

But he’s locked up now, and it seems possible that his latest difficulties with law enforcement this week…

Indonesia Arrests Firebrand Cleric’s Lawyer Over Attacks
Munarman, left, with Rizieq the Fanatic

…after being investigated by the admirable officers of Densus88, may be more than a minor headache.

The anti-terror specials allegedly arrested him for not only ‘inciting people to commit terrorist acts,’ but also for ‘pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group…

Of course we must await judgement as the majesty of rhe law unfolds, but the media report makes for an enjoyable read.

The arrest took place in Tangerang, just a few miles from where I live in Jakarta, after police interrogated ‘scores of suspected militants detained after an attack outside a Roman Catholic cathedral during Palm Sunday Mass last month.’

    We covered that shocking incident….

Makassar – One Less Foul Fiend In The World?

…and it’s interesting that the police also cobducted a no doubt diligent search of the vigilante gang’s former HQ and turned up ‘chemicals for use in explosives.

    Very interesting!

Jakarta Fury –Merkel Flunkey Prowling Fanatic HQ!

We wrote quite a lot about their HQ, when Mama Stasi Merkel’s agents were prowling about there a few months ago!

    Now what?

He is accused of an evil conspiracy to carry out acts of terror,” National Police spokesperson Argo Yuwono said in a statement….

    Patience is our watchword!

    But no sympathy!

it’s hard not to think about all the people harassed and hurt by cowardly FPI thugs.

I couldn’t agree with you more.
His TV One performance was just like a spoilt brat throwing its toys around.
Somebody should have given him a good hard slap that day.
I hope he stays behind bars as long as they can keep him there.
I read what you said recently about the death penalty for terrorist offences
I agreed with that and even more so now. .

Yes, JazPen. We all know what Munarman is like and hope he is made to answer in the court.
It is time many other fanatics were prosecuted also.
Almost everyone in Indonesia must want to see punishments given for all the brutal FPI has done.

Pseudonymic Soni’s Death? Jakarta Cops Unforthcoming!

We recently wrote quite a lot about Maaher, the fanatical cleric whose real name was Soni Ernata.

Ustaz Maaher At-Thuwailibi Maaher At-Thuwailibi aka Soni Ernata

    Pseudonymic Soni Jailed – 800 Thugs M.I.A.

He died in police custody on Monday but there’s no blame attached to the cops.

They are in fact showing consideration and  uncommon sensitivity as regards the malady which brought about the extremist’s death.

According to vivanews, the cops’ PR man, Inspector General Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono, speaking at National Police HQ in Jakarta…

    National Police HQ, Jakarta

….was tight-lipped about ‘the illness suffered by Ustaz Maaher At-Thuwailibi or Soni Eranata…

“The malady is sensitive, which could make the family name tarnished if we mention it here, said Argo on Tuesday.

Now there will be nothing but speculation until somebody spills the beans.

There’s already been a bit of a commotion on ‘social media,’ since somebody decided to scold the police for detaining Maaher.

One can imagine how the police would have been scolded had they NOT taken Maaher into custody, after his menacing rants aimed at a brave young lady here. .

Bravo Nikita! Sexy Star Faces Fanatic Mob Threat!

But I’m not going to get into that all over again.

    All very curious.

Top Jakarta Cop Asks Very Fair Question!

Commendable, the quote from Commissioner General Agus Andrianto…

    Agus Andrianto

….who runs Indonesia’s National Police Security Maintenance Agency!

Reminding us that there’s a video of Rizieq the Fanatic…

….braying that his self-styled ‘Islam Defenders Front’, was ready to fight his enemies with all his strength, whether in the form of firearms, ammunition, or explosives.

Usually, Tempo has an English-language version of its content, but unfortunately not this time.

So as I wish to applaud Pak Agus, who responded with perfect, irrefutable logic, I have polished up Google Translate’s product, as follows!

“That means, if they have firearms, have ammunition, have explosives, then we just keep quiet? What will this country be like if we stay silent?

    Well said, sir!

No way should cops back off from confrontation with the lawless!

Nothing peaceful about murders, bashings, arson, looting and widespread property damage.
    BLM protests are not peaceful

…..what happens when police fail in their duty to maintain order.

Agus went on to explain that there were no less than 94 cases and 199 suspects involving FPI.

Not only that, but there were 35 FPI members indicated to be involved in terrorist organizations.

    Agus’ conclusion –

‘….every social organization or mass organization, whether registered or not, must base each of its activities on the applicable legal rules.

“Go ahead, as long as they don’t break the law, as long as they don’t disturb public order, as long as they don’t disturb security, yes, go ahead!”

As said in the headline, very fair comment!

If the police were only soft on leftwing mobs, like that grinning fool in Avon and Somerset, that would be bad enough.
However I have been horrified by the way British police forces have become political enforcers.

‘Nasty’ Or ‘Naughty?’ Sectarian ‘Sex-Chat’ In Indonesia

What I thought was the most telling part of the widespread media coverage of the news about the ‘Chat Mesum’ –

    • variously translated as ‘nasty chat’ or sex chat’ but since I haven’t listened to it, I leave it to you!

    – that Jakarta Police are being empowered to re-open the intriguing case against Shihab…

    ….aka Rizieq the Fanatic…

Indonesian cleric denies receiving pornographic messages from female supporter

    ….surely has to be this!

FPI has not yet provided information on this matter. The FPI General Secretary has not yet answered the instant conversation that was sent. Deputy General Secretary Aziz Yanuar has not yet answered phone calls. FPI’s Legal Team, Ichwan Tuankoota, has not yet answered phone calls…

As regular readers well know, the self-styled ‘Islam Defenders Front’ is not noted for long silences.

It’s not unfair, methinks, to say that sectarian fanatics here in Indonesia..

…very much enjoy making their voices heard.

But maybe the above sources are, on this issue, simply thinking carefully before they give voice.

We’ll have another look at this later today!

FPI Say ‘We Got No Guns!’ But Their ‘Military Training?’

‘Fitna’ means slander, and last night, the local TV channels, were at last catching up on the dramatic news of the shootings on the Jakarta toll road.

Jakarta – Six Sectarians Shot Dead, But TV News?

Rizieq the Fanatic’s close comrade, Munarman, was damn near spitting out the accusatory F-word at a televised press conference.

I do try to be fair, even to people I can’t stand, like Munarman…..

    – yes, he who infamously called for people to “hunt down ‘liberals’ in their neighborhoods, to beat on their doors and expel them.”Jakarta Globe 15/3/12

    • ——
    • …invited onto TVOne to discuss FPI’s hoodlum behaviour, Munarman lost the argument and then totally lost his infantile temper, hurling a glassful of water over the mild-mannered academic who’d bested him.

…..so I can say he gave a very different version of events, of which you can read a summary here…

use Google Translate if need be

Moreover, he claimed that Rizieq’s violent vigilante gang, the FPI – the self-styled ‘Islam Defenders Front’ – had no access to fire-arms, though the police have displayed hand-guns taken from those they shot.

We also heard that Rizieq was hiding out, and that several FPI ‘laskars’ had been kidnapped!

It’s important to note that ‘laskars’ in that context means ‘fighters.’

So however they ended up, they had chosen to serve as ‘warriors’ in an extremist cause, and wear paramilitary gear.

The FPI record is infamous, and they’re not at all (except at the moment!) shy about advertising their violent inclinations.

Today there’s been lots more coverage, and inevitably Amnesty International, fresh from demanding suppression of dissent in the Western world…

Amnesty? Shamnesty! Making War On Free Speech!

….has leapt in, prattling about fact-finding.

    Amnesty prattles much too often.

Cur Qureshi and Amnesty – Don’t Say We Weren’t Warned!

I expect many Indonesians, like many observant Western people, will treat Amnesty with the indifference it’s earned.

Another familiar name, which we mentioned only recently, has been heard….

Jakarta Boycott Reality Check? Ask Fadli, Caught Smiling With Trump!

…and he rather subverts his main argument by his laughable initial assertion, viz.

“I strongly believe that the supporters of Habib Rizieq love peace…

    Like at the Monas Riot?

    But he carries on gamely…

“….and are not equipped with weapons.

It must be thoroughly investigated. If it is excessive, then the police have committed abuse of power. Kapolda must be responsible,” said Fadli Zon

But we know  – and Fadli knows – that an officer in the Indonesian armed forces got into a lot of trouble for including the gangster group in his military training course, about three years ago.

In fact, Fadli slammed critics who were questioning the program and FPI’s participation in it….   http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/01/09/protests-against-military-training-for-fpi-exaggerated-fadli-zon.html

    Fadli Zon

The politician from the Gerindra Party also criticized the military’s decision to strip Lebak military commander of his post for recruiting the FPI in Banten to take the training recently, calling the decision “regrettable”.

But perhaps that military training programme merely encompassed push-ups and cross-country runs!?!

I knew you would find something interesting to bring back into this story, from all the coverage you have given to the FPI over the years.

We need to go back to 2017 and see exactly what kind of military training they were getting.
I’m sure the police remembered and checked out what they might be up against.
If it turns out as I think it turned out, that military training, people need to be reminded of a very relevant fact.
I’m surprised none of the journalists at Munarman’s press conference asked about this.
Maybe there was a dangerous glass of water on the table!

Jakarta – Six Sectarians Shot Dead, But TV News?

Very odd the Indonesian tv channels’ low-key approach to dramatic news here today, after no less than six of Rizieq the Fanatic’s ‘suspected sympathisers’ were shot dead on the toll road between Jakarta and Cikampek in West Java.

Four more went on the run!

The 10 people are suspected of being sympathizers of the leader of the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) Rizieq Shihab…. https://amp.kompas.com/nasional/read/2020/12/07/14084051/bareskrim-polri-bantu-polda-metro-jaya-buru-4-simpatisan-rizieq-shihab-yang

BTW, we still await news of whether that fanatic showed up  to answer the police summons today!

Good to read that the police are getting fed up, viz.

Since one of my regular commenters alerted me not long ago, I have found info on today’s events on both local and foreign news-sites, but on the local tv channels?

According to police statements, the incident started with the Polda Metro Jaya investigation of information in the short message application regarding the mobilization of masses to guard Rizieq’s investigation.. https://amp.kompas.com/nasional/read/2020/12/07/14084051/bareskrim-polri-bantu-polda-metro-jaya-buru-4-simpatisan-rizieq-shihab-yang

Channel News Asia – based in Singapore- provided full coverage at 5pm Jakarta time, including denial of the police account! And they say Rizieq the Fanatic has gone into hiding, ‘for his own safety!’

Islamist Fanatics Threaten Peaceful Minority, Again!

As you know, I went walkabout overseas a week or so ago, so missed some local news, notably the latest intolerant outburst by the self-styled Islam Defenders Front, the notorious FPI, whose hate and violence we have oft recorded, not to mention their ‘bravery!’

I had not heard news of the outcome of the huge petition against renewal of their permit to operate as a ‘community organisation…’

    Jakarta – Anti-Fanatic Petition

…so I just checked – President Jokowi’s Minister Wiranto said this week that no decision has been reached. https://m.republika.co.id/berita/nasional/politik/19/07/19/puvqgh409-wiranto-belum-diputuskan-izin-fpi-dilanjutkan-atau-tidak

    We wait expectantly.

This time the white-shirt extremists were belly-aching about the inoffensive Ahmadiyah minority and the location was held at South Sulawesi’s Provincial Assembly…

Sulawesi ( once called Celebes) is in the middle of the map, a fairly large island with long peninsular ’arms and legs.’

    …on Friday 12th July.

The bigoted gang arrived in pick-up trucks to protest the local legislature’s allegedly inadequate position on peaceful dissenters, who do not share their theological interpretations.

One ranter was reportedly screaming that he did not want the nation to be “cursed by Allah because of the sect!”

According to Timur News, the Islamists had numerous demands, including the Ahmadis’ “immediate repentance” and a police investigation into alleged “blasphemy” – which presumably refers to those theological differences between the Ahmadis and the vigilante gang.

As I have already said, the Ahmadis are utterly inoffensive, and peaceful, despite the frightful brutality visited upon them for years here in Indonesia.

Ahmadi kids in ‘shelter’ after their families were driven out of their homes by vicious Islamists

But what is truly offensive is the creepy call by the FPI, ‘inviting all Muslims to always supervise every activity of religious blasphemy specifically in the city of Makassar.’

In other words, not content with being fanatic foes of religious liberty themselves, the FPI want to turn the province, and indeed the country, into a sticky-beak cauldron…

…nasty nosey-parkers ‘supervising’ how fellow-citizens worship Almighty God.

And even more offensive, is Point Five of their diktat list – viz.

If Ahmadiyah is not disbanded in 3 × 24 hours, all of its activities in disseminating its heretical ideas, we will forcibly dissolve every Ahmadiyah activity in our own way…’  https://www.timurnews.com/10259-2/10259/

Now THAT merits a serious police investigation!

We have seen how these bigots ‘forcibly’ handle anyone who does anything they don’t like, as our photo of thugs attacking little food-stalls in Sulawesi some years ago..

    ..the ‘offending’ victims’ being who?

Workers enjoying a simple lunchtime snack during Ramadan.

Nor should we forget the bloodthirsty call, by a leading FPI notable to a savage mob.

Just watch the video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7RLCXNdKF4  –which shows him issuing his monstrous call for his rabble audience to ‘Bunuh, Bunuh, Bunuh’ (KILL KILL KILL!) innocent Ahmadis.

Anyone Up For ‘A Refreshing Jihad Tour?’

Many Indonesians ( especially my former students!) are good English-speakers, but there are a handful of words that are commonly misused.

    ’Refreshing’ is one.

‘I’m going to the Botanical Gardens this weekend for refreshing,’ they’ll say.

A nice day out in the open air, is a fair approximation. Easy to get the meaning.

But I had to grimace at a report in detik.com, as this unpredictable Indonesian weekend began.

Coordinator Of Jakarta Jihad Tour Says Only Going For Refreshing.’

Not many people, of either the sectarian jihadist persuasion or in European countries which have been on the receiving end of jihadist terror…

…..will find this credible, given what’s planned for Jakarta tomorrow.

As we related recently, thousands of Jakartans may opt for not going into work on the 22nd….

My bus passed the venue of tomorrow’s announcement, more stalwart men in uniform and rolls and rolls of sharp-looking anti-savage wire out front.

Not to my way of thinking.

Edarkan Paket Tour Jihad ke Jakarta 22 Mei, Pria Ini Diamankan Polisi

    Repentant Roni, on the left

However, the Jihad Tour coordinator, Mr. Muhammad Roni, has said it’s all a big misunderstanding.

His apology came along with a written statement made at East Java Regional Police HQ on Sunday.

It’s just a trip for ‘refreshing’ to see Jakarta!!

Jakarta is a city not without allure!

Who wouldn’t want a fun walk-about in a capital city awash with rumours of mob mayhem  – arriving on demo day?

“When asked the reason for using the word jihad, Roni claimed that the word jihad does not always mean war...

    Image result for jihad

‘…it is not meant as war, it’s about our struggle to get by, making a living, to support our wives and children, so the word jihad is about being ready to die…”

    Well of course!

Why not take Roni’s word for it, that it’s just a lovely little outing planned for tomorrow, to ease the stesses and strains of daily life?

EXCEPT…detik.com, like many other Indonesians, had previously learned from another part of the media here, that –

…Roni had said that the jihad he was doing was a jihad in defending the nation.

He considered that action demanding justice for the administration of elections also included jihad, especially in saving the country from depravity…

    Image result for depravity

Well, given my own die-hard depravity, it’s probably just as well that the Indonesian friends I had arranged to meet for lunch tomorrow have cancelled, because of the risk of turmoil or at least traffic chaos…

…always bad in Jakarta but infinitely worse if the streets are clogged by protesters.

Thus my own meanderings will probably take me no further than my local Superindo supermarket.

    So relax, Roni.

Not much chance your refreshing bus run will bump into at least this particular depraved foreigner.

I too will be at home tomorrow watching tv and hope Jakarta is not put in much trouble by People Power demo. I hope to write again tomorrow at home.
      Keep up your good work.

Is it true the Jihad Tur man has been arrested.
I hope so. If he is true to belief, he should not change what he tell media.
      Who will trust him?

Another ‘Blasphemy’ Victim! Indonesia Embarrassed Again?

After sending a good man to prison for ‘offences’ that would be laughed out of court in most democratic countries…

Slouching Towards Shariah, Indonesia Jails Ahok

…Indonesia now faces further embarrassment over its archaic ‘blasphemy’ legislation.

The interestingly named ‘Democratic Party’ has expelled a local official in East Java, because he dared question some tenets of the Muslim creed.

That’s the same party that ran SBY’s successful campaign for the presidency a few years ago, and since he, during his years in office, not only did nothing to scrap the bizarre ‘blasphemy’ law…

….but actually proposed that sectarian censorship be made a global diktat, no surprises, I guess, that the ‘Democrats’ are so eager to stomp poor Mr. Rendra Hadikurniawan.

Detained for saying what he thinks – Rendra taken by cops

And indeed, any party has the right to expel any member it doesn’t want.

But the next chapter in this sorry saga is horrific, at least to those of us who care about Indonesia’s image overseas.

Sidoarjo Ansor Youth Movement (GP Ansor), the youth wing of Nahdlatul Ulama, said the statement from Rendra, who was a member of the Democratic Party prior to the allegations, had hurt a lot of Muslims.

Unlikely that anybody was admitted to hospital from watching a video, so we must assume G P Ansor means those pathetic ‘hurt feelings,’ which normal grown-ups handle without running crying to the cops.

    Times are a’changing here.

I had always – but now no longer – considered GP Ansor a ‘moderate’ outfit, because they had real cred in standing up to Islamist louts….

But not any more, if this report is accurate – and I have no reason to think it’s inaccurate.

“We reported him to the police to avoid further public unrest,” said the organization’s deputy chairman, Rachmad Muzayin, on Friday

East Java Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Frans Barung Mangera said that the police officers had arrested Rendra in Trawas in Mojokerto.

    For pity’s sakes!

Is it now a criminal offence to question dogma?

    Well, yes, obviously!

Thank you Ross. I was hoping you may write about this new attack on free speech by a new enemy, the Ansor. I also believed they were on our side for freedom, but I am very disappointed.

President Jokowi made a promise to us for a Mental Revolution but that is impossible when we still have not got free from this olden times blasphemy censorship.

Very happy always when you come back to writing about Indonesia again and I am in agreement about this man Rendra .
Why can he not say what he wants about any religion?
Ansor and the NU let us down. They want oppose extremists but now they do extremists job and tells us we cannot speak about religion as we wish to.
They are same like the intolerant MUI who will never debate but always ban. .
      What are they afraid of?

I was just talking about this and then saw what you have written. Words of wisdom, and I dont always say that about your blog, Ross.
Its pitiful how thin-skinned these ‘religious’ people can be.
What the hell will be next?
Ramadan starts in a couple of weeks.
Will the FPI be out again picking on people who want to eat lunch?
Or is it now so bad that the police will enforce the fast on everyone, whether we are fasting or not?
Are we the last generation of happy expats here?

So there is some talk of mental health issues?
That sounds like the good old USSR to me, if you criticize the ruling ideology, you are unbalanced!
Or is it that this detainee is getting ready to use it as a defense strategy against this unbelievable charge?

It is easy for you expats.
You may leave Indonesia anytime you want to leave.
      Have a pity on us.
We must live here in our country eventhough it is not like our country anymore.
Once we were freed from the Dutch. Who will free us from those who think like Arabs?
