Manado Mayhem! Jakarta Post Flouts Its Own ‘Bold’ Motto?

If ever I feel in need of a wry smile, I check out the Jakarta Post website and look at its motto.

    ===

    Always Bold. Always Independent

    It is so untrue.

I could refer yet again to their ‘pluralist’ editors, who thunder away on all sorts of issues yet have never uttered a word to condemn the Nazi-style book-burning…

    • =======
    • But today I noticed their dramatic report on the scenes of massive disorder in Manado, where hundreds of righteously angry citizens turned out to protest at the visit to their province of the Deputy Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives.

    • In the face of the teargas, the protesters fought back throwing stones at police officers, several of whom were injured.

    • Facing strong resistance, the police deployed a water cannon to disperse the crowd. Protesters managed to break through the entrance gate of the governor’s office compound before hundreds of police pushed them back.

      http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/05/13/angry-mob-protests-deputy-house-speakers-visit-to-manado.html

    • Right!

    • A powerful display of strong  emotions on a subject clearly of great significance. So all readers here and overseas are curious as to exactly what the issue may be, that has provoked such an outbreak of public anger.

    • Naturally, the bold JP tells all, very clearly?

    • Uh, NOT!

    • The protesters said they rejected Fahri’s visit because of controversial remarks he is reported to have made that could heighten sectarian tensions in the country.

    WHAT ‘controversial remarks?’

HOW could Fahri’s mysterious words have provoked ‘sectarian tensions?’

Useful information, surely, which any newspaper worthy of the name might think readers ought to know, so they can understand the story that made this JP headline?

Angry mob protests deputy House speaker’s visit to Manado

Tough! The JP doesn’t divulge the Deputy Speaker’s ‘remarks.’

The JP doesn’t even mention which party he belongs to!

    WHY?

    We’ve covered Fahri before.

Noble sentiments, but his invocation of humanity as a guiding principle hardly sits well with the shameful record of his party leader, Anis Matta, whose humanitarian instincts were made manifest when he wrote that infamous ode of adulation after 9/11, singing the praises of mass-murderer Osama Bin Laden..

    ==========

Perhaps there’s a clue in that report, not to Fahri’s latest ‘remarks’ which have upset the good people of Manado, but to why almost anything Fahri says might be controversial!

Or you can try to look through those parts of the Indonesian media which really are BOLD and INDEPENDENT!

      My God,
Ross you may be pessimistic about the future here, same as I am, but you are not giving up without a fight.

All thats happened in Indonesia recently is the fault of people who never stood up to the fanatics and Gramedia is guilty as anybody after what they did, burning those books.

I may be wrong but wasnt Fahri Hamzah the one who wanted to open the doors of the parliament to the anti-Ahok mobs.
Yes, I just went to the link at the end of your post there and he was.

It used to be so nice living here but now we really have to watch the news every day and see what the bad people are planning, Although I read that Reuters exclusive and it sounds like they will go after the Chinese minority before they come for us!
      No consolation in my opinion.
      Keep fighting the rearguard action,

Oxymoronic Jakarta Post Reporting – Conservatism = Radicalism?

While it was heartening to read that lots of good Jakarta citizens have appealed to the security forces to crack down on the Islamist menace…

    ====

    http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/05/04/jakartans-call-for-help-against-radicalism.html

… it is baffling to read through the Jakarta Post’s report on the situation, replete with contradictory descriptions of the problem of Islamist intolerance as at once ‘conservatism’  – a growing wave of religious conservatism…

    =

…and ‘radicalism’ – the headquarters of the National Police, the Jakarta Police and the Indonesian Military (TNI), were adorned with dozens of flower boards bearing messages calling on the government to curb radicalism.

    Can’t have it both ways!

And if the JP journos can’t make up their minds, why not just tell it like it is – Arabisation of Indonesia, or Islamist fanaticism ( I admit that’s slightly unfair on Middle Eastern people, especially Middle Eastern women, who also suffer Islamist injustice The Glory That Was Egypt – When Women Were Unashamed To Be Women!  )

In making up their minds, Indonesian media people must be aware that Indonesia was founded on the pluralist principles embedded in the state ideology of Pancasila. It had to be, because the archipelago is home to various religions and multiple cultures.

So a genuinely conservative Indonesian will be proud of his country’s heritage of traditional tolerance and seek to preserve it.

Any movement or ideology which seeks to undermine that heritage is by definition radical.

Whether that subversion be an alien import called marxism, bent on fuelling class hatred, or the equally alien import – from the Arab World – called Islamism, it needs to be recognised and struck down.

Indonesians did a good job in 1965, excising the communist cancer called PKI (the Indonesian Communist Party) from the body politic.

Nowadays, the threat is also an ideology which proclaims its internationalism, aspiring to force people to acknowledge a global sectarian allegiance.

If the decent citizens who toted all those flowers into town seriously seek to preserve a civilised way of life from evil, they should appeal to President Jokowi to match his words –  – with deeds…

…and stick to his plan to impose a ban, similar to that on the PKI, on Hizbut Tahrir and all other like-minded fanatic gangs who would place Indonesia under an international caliphate based on iniquitous shariah.

At the moment, Jokowi is facing an uncannily similar situation to that which besets President Trump, whose good intentions are being thwarted by politically motivated people using specious court manoeuvres.

Jokowi too is being urged to spend time pushing the ban through courts, and after the Ahok verdict, God only knows what Indonesian judges might do if faced with predictably raucous fanatic demos.

All civilised countries should welcome any action against radical Islamists.

Especially Australia, where timorous Turnsteer, like his predecessor, cowers from that sensible step – Grubbing for Sectarian Votes – Labor Vies With Mufti’s Mate Malcolm!  – which would be welcomed by millions of patriots!

You know Ross that the Jakarta Post wont ever be straight about the Islamists. They are under the thumb as long as theyre owned by the book burners Gramedia.
I dont know if this radical/conservative is just bad journalism or if they want to confuse people but I will never trust anything they say.

Sumatra Crimmigrants Re-Branded As ‘Refugees?’ Why, Jakarta Post!

The Indonesian Navy has thwarted an attempt to smuggle eight Somali citizens using an Indonesian boat from Malaysia through Bagan Asahan waters in North Sumatra.   http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/04/30/indonesia-foils-smuggling-of-somali-refugees-from-malaysia.html

That’s likely true enough, but  how does the Jakarta Post headline the story?

Indonesia foils smuggling of Somali refugees from Malaysia

    ……..

Oh, really? Was the crimmigrant incursion really ‘thwarted?’ If the word has any meaning, it means the crimmigrants were prevented from entering Indonesia.

    Were they?

Bapak Agung Samporno, of the Directorate General of Immigration at the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, says the captain and crew had jumped into the mangrove forest carrying the passports of eight Somali refugees who had allegedly come from Malaysia.

So did Pak Agung say the detainees included the illegal passengers? Were all those detained promptly sent back to Malaysia?

It doesn’t sound like it! And how has he determined the crimmigrants are ‘refugees?’ Can serious vetting be completed so speedily?

If you peruse the entire JP report from top to bottom, you’ll find not a jot of evidence that the persons on the vessel were ‘refugees.

Is the JP staffed by psychics?

We should not blame the reporter. After all, they don’t dream up the headlines, as a rule. That’s up to the editorial staff.

So did some editorial fatwa get handed down, that all stray Somalis found sneaking into Indonesia MUST be presented to readers as poor, pitiful ‘refugees?’

    It’s a pattern long-established in other countries.

    ===========

At some point he asked his boss why the reporters kept labelling immigrants as refugees when it was evident that they were not.

    ….

My boss informed me that immigrants are weak and that it is therefore the obligation of TV-journalists to be on their side. Immigrants had to be presented as so pitiful that viewers would weep.”   http://www.rightsidenews.com/editorial/world-opinion-and-editorial/the-free-press-comes-to-swede

Is the author of this Jakarta Post headline Swedish, perhaps? Has the Swedish disease spread to Jakarta?

Or it just typical Jakarta Post journalism?

There are some people born in Somalia who can accurately be described as refugees.

    ====

    Hirsi

    =

Think of one Somali-born woman who in fact is downright heroic, the brave and wise Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who has been subjected to death threats by sectarian savages for her warnings to Western countries.

There are also lots of other Somalis who go abroad who can accurately be described in other ways, for example : –

An 18-year-old Somali man has been arrested for breaking into a hospital and trying to sexually assault a female patient. Man arrested after attempted hospital sex attack

Or those described here, detained in connection with terrorist offences.  Minnesota’s 5th Amendment 5th Column – History Repeats Itself?

Or this Somali trio? One of 3 men accused in Portland beating death pleads guilty

Or this?  Somalian migrant Marke Abdulah Ahmad, who was on the boat, also said the asylum seekers were subject to abuse. “We were tortured and inhumanely treated by the Australian military..”  Asylum Seekers Allege Mistreatment by Australian Navy

Or those mentioned here – UK’s ‘Asylum’ Undesirables – Back to Somalia Soon?

    ====================

We could go on and on, and the list of course wouldn’t prove that most Somali illegals are dangerous. I’d say most are economic migrants.

True, their country’s not nice to live in, given the vicious religious intolerance –

Somalia has officially banned Christmas and New Years celebrations

Government claims that such festivities will threaten Islamic culture

    Gambar terkait

Mohamed Khayrow, director general of Somalia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs, stated that Christmas celebrations could “could damage the faith of the Muslim community.”.http://www.newstalk.com/Somalia-have-officially-banned-Christmas-and-New-Years-celebrations

…but if such brutal bigotry were the litmus test for refugee status, how many Pakistanis too could register a claim, or any other nationality in the clammy grip of shariah law.

    =====

    Meanwhile, Australians should pay heed.

    =

    =

Pak Agung reminds us that “Indonesia is located between a refugee-receiving country, Malaysia, and a country that has ratified the UN convention on refugees, Australia….,”

    =

So these phoney ‘refugees’ – PHONEY because they were already in Malaysia, so moving to Indonesia shows they’re not seeking a safe refuge, just a a cushier berth – are actually aiming for Oz, more snouts nuzzling at the tax-payer trough.

    Anyway, the point remains.

Media misrepresentation of migrants, as in the Jakarta Post, does not do real refugees any sort of service. Indeed, it wasn’t THAT long ago that the JP provided a platform for a far-left female Indonesian to attack Hirsi Ali.

An Unspeakable Woman – And An Unspeakable Newspaper!

There must be a measure of animosity towards victims of Islamist evil in its corridors

I doubt we’ll see a change in style any time soon, any more than the JP will ever apologise for its gutless editors’ failure to condemn the Nazi-style book-burning in which its Gramedia parent company collaborated with the most extreme Islamist factions in Indonesia.

    . Does what does Yo-Ho!

Good work, Indonesian Navy, who have presented the crimmigrants’ passports to the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, and a photo of said passports tops the Jakarta Post report today.

But the Directorate spokesman told the media that the captain and crew had jumped into the mangrove forest carrying the passports of eight Somali refugees who had allegedly come from Malaysia.

But where are the Somali crimmigrants?

If the villains who were transporting them were rounded up, okay, but what about the illegal immigrants who constituted their cargo?

The logical inference is that they too were taken, but if they are now being detained in Sumatra, then their illicit incursion was not actually foiled, as the headline says. They are not back in Malaysia.

Or are they? Or are they just being held pending deportation?

    They musts their ere  ,Did

Media Coverage of Islamist Louts – JG Trounces JP!

A most peculiar, patchy piece in the Jakarta Post this week, on how deputy gubernatorial candidate Djarot Saiful Hidayat faced hostile opposition from supporters of his gubernatorial election rivals while attending an anniversary prayer for late former president Soeharto….

Djarot is on the left, Ahok on the right

Djarot is the running mate of Governor Ahok – the pluralist Christian seeking re-election next month. Ahok is hated by all the vilest sectarian elements here, and is currently on trial for the mediaeval offence of’blasphemy.’

One prominent Islamist bigot has demanded the DEATH PENALTY!

But let’s continue with the JP report. I won’t simply repeat it word for word but the link will confirm I am paraphrasing it faithfully.

…an unidentified protester threw a bottle…some protesters pursued him while hurling verbal abuse…some protesters even trying to block his access to the mosque….

    http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/03/12/djarot-faces-hostile-protesters-at-east-jakarta-mosque.html

Atrocious antics, deserving serious, thorough investigation. Yet the JP reporters do NOT identify the hoodlums, apart from that vague reference to ‘supporters of rivals.’

    Compare and contrast.

So WHO were the loutish trouble-makers? The Jakarta Post’s rival English-language paper, the Jakarta Globe, has incurred my disapproval in the past…

…but does a far better job, with its report on the same disgraceful hoodlum display.

Members of several Muslim groups intercepted incumbent Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat while on his way to attend an Islamic prayer to commemorate the issuance of the controversial Supersemar, or March 11 Decree…

    =======================

    • Protestors loudly yelled abuse and the word “infidel” at Djarot…
    • So it was not a manifestation of political conflict but of naked sectarian hatred.  http://eyewitness.thejakartaglobe.com/news/protestors-try-to-prevent-djarot-from-attending-supersemar-commemoration/
    • And another thing!
    • That ceremony Djarot was attending?
    • The Jakarta Post’s description – ‘ an anniversary prayer for late former president Soeharto’  – is more than a little economical with the facts of the occasion.
    • It gives the impression that it was merely a commemoration of the dictator’s life or of his death.
    • NOT SO! The Jakarta Globe spells out the truth!
    • .The mass prayer was held to commemorate the issuance of the Supersemar letter, which transferred authority from the country’s founding father, Sukarno, to Suharto, who was the chief of the Army in 1966.
    • ————–

General Suharto – the beneficiary of ‘Supersemar’

    ———————-

Every Indonesian knows about that episode.

Some regard it as a good day for the country, after Soekarno’s erratic regime and his constant flirtation of the evil totalitarians of the PKI – the Communist Party of Indonesia.

    =====

But many also see it as the moment when Suharto’s iron rule began, an end to democracy and the start of a dictatorship which lasted for for over thirty years.

Regardless, that’s what last Saturday’s event was all about.

    ============

    PS

As an interesting foot-note to the above, the list of those present at the Supersemar get-together includes none other than the very man we mentioned above but did not name, the blood-thirsty fanatic who reckons Djarot’s running-mate, our good Governor Ahok, deserves death for a qitty reference to the Koran.

    Now we name him.

Habib Rizieq godfather of the self-styled ‘Defenders of Islam!’

“We encourage the government to process the death penalty for Ahok as soon as possible,” said Rizieq.  http://www.suara.com/news/2016/10/14/134313/

Cruel Jakarta Post, Thus To Raise Then Dash Our Hopes!

Busily watching the Inauguration, today’s visitor long since left, so for the time being I’m stuck with a newly-empty bottle of Jim Beam for company.

    Jim-Beam-White-Label-Posters

Don’t be alarmed – there were only a few inches in it when I started this arvo, the remains of my Festive Season allocation, just enough to toast the new President in Washington!

But now that The Donald is safely installed – good, short speech, BTW! – a look at local news here.

    the-jakarta-post

In my opinion, the Jakarta Post is rarely a source of hope for many people.

In fact sometimes it’s a real source of despair!

I have long hoped its editorial clique might grow a set and condemn their parent company, Gramedia, for complicity in Nazi–style book-burning.

    ——————-

    • But so far, on that shameful episode, at least, back-bones remain underdeveloped.
    • However, today, recovering slowly from the third party attended this week, I flicked through their current output of local news, and my heart skipped a beat at this exciting headline.

    Noose tightens around FPI leader

The FPI, as most readers know from its constant appearance on our pages, is a nasty sectarian thug-gang, and the leader referred to is Habib Rizieq.

If you have missed recent stories on these phenomena, here’s a couple of links.

Nightmare – Indonesian IslamoNazis Get Armed Forces Training!

So Has Indonesia Come To This? Paradise Lost?

So you can imagine my disappointment when I opened up the ‘Noose’ story and learned that the JP writers were not being literal…

    …….

    gallows

    .

    ….but had resorted to metaphor!

Never mind.  I’m a resilient fellow, and never stay downcast for long.

Besides, there’s another party to go to tomorrow – actually, today, for it’s after midnight here!

In fact, of course, the report in the JP is quite fun to read, with the fanatic facing possible prosecution in West Java, of all places, after loads of decent Indonesians were outraged by IslamoNazi antics.

Rizieq now faces public scrutiny as the police investigate five separate cases. These cases relate to Rizieq’s alleged blasphemy toward Christianity, insults to the State ideology Pancasila, comments over supposed communist symbols on Rupiah bank notes and hate speech.

    http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/01/20/noose-tightens-around-fpi-leader.html

Read and savour, the biter belatedly bit.

Pagi, Evi! You Hate Hypocrisy? Why Work For Jakarta Post?

It’s a glorious hot, sunny morning in Jakarta, so I am drinking coffee and browsing media output – no visitors today, as my usual guests will be back at work after enjoying their weekend.

Lucky me – a day of agreeable indolence looms.

    ——————————————

    • Hasil gambar untuk sunny coffee morning
    • ——————–
    • And here’s what’s caught my eye!
    • No, not the coffee-cup!
    • The following peculiar accusation of hypocrisy aimed at Jakarta’s Governor Ahok!

    ——-

many of my friends cheered when Ahok said the FPI should be disbanded without realizing that it was actually a violation of the Constitution, Article 28I paragraph 1 on freedom of assembly and expressing opinion to be exact.

    http://www.thejakartapost.com/academia/2016/10/29/your-liberal-human-rights-make-a-glaring-omission-of-universal-principles.html

That’s an extract from a JP article by some lady I’ve never heard of, called Evi Mariani. No surprise I don’t know her – she’s a ‘staff writer for the Jakarta Post.’

I do wonder if the Jakarta Post is planning to endorse one of Ahok’s opponents. There have been straws in the wind before this –The Jakarta Post’s Horrible Hate Headline!

However, it’s unlikely to sway many votes – it’s a contemptible, hypocritical newspaper, whose advice decent people should ignore.

    ……..

    6e6cb-hypocrisyofoursociety

    …….

It purports to be ‘liberal’ while maintaining total editorial silence about one of the worst examples of sectarian censorship Jakarta has seen in recent years.

We take every opportunity to remind everyone around the world of the JP’s failure to condemn the Hitlerian book-burning committed a couple of years ago by the newspaper’s parent company, grovelling Gramedia, at the behest of Islamist fanatics.

Ms. Evi’s words above are part of a diatribe against Governor Ahok, whom thousands of ignoramuses currently want to murder because he allegedly used a verse from the Koran in a way that fanatics don’t like.

But at this time it might be wiser to focus on the gangster group that seeks to use shariah law to justify having him put to death him…the very FPI that Evi reckons has ‘rights.’

The IslamoNazi record speaks for itself.

There are individuals and groups here in Indonesia who believe in shariah law with all its iniquitous cruelties…

     http://www.suarapembaruan.com/home/mui-dukung-pelaku-kumpul-kebo-dipidanakan/32705

    ———

Evi may be right in her interpretation of the constitution – maybe these people do have the right to demand law-codes that seek to institutionalise oppression.

    It’s debatable.

Since WW2, Nazi parties, even verbal expressions of support for Nazism, have been banned in Germany and other European countries.

    ———-

    Hammer_sickle_svastika

    Birds of a feather

    ————

Yet Nazism’s evil twin, Communism, is permitted!

Something very wrong about those Western bans – a total double-standard.

Communism, in fact, killed more innocents than Hitler. One reason why the vicious totalitarians of the PKI, Indonesian Communist Party, are outlawed here.

Nazis and Communists are both monstrous – if one monster is banned, both should be.

    ———

However, let’s concentrate on the present-day danger, the FPI, whose record of malevolent violence and incitement to murder is hardly news…

    ——

    fpi kill busddhist

    –——

    alubis

    FPI’s Sobri Lubis

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7RLCXNdKF4  –KILL, KILL, KILL‘ innocent members of the Ahmadiyah minority.

    ———

…but they must be news to Evi, since she doesn’t want the FPI banned. The above examples are not ‘rogue’ members of the white-shirt hoodlum outfit, but typical. They seriously think shariah outweighs the law of the land.

So, Evi, why NOT outlaw them, as the PKI reds are banned?

    ——–

But as to Ahok – his outspokenness is one of the most attractive features of his character…

Fanatic Islamist Wails At Christian Governor – “He Calls People Names!”

…a refreshing contrast to the mealy-mouthed euphemisms we hear too often, and not just from other politicians!

Many journo hacks are notable for their pathetic use of the term ‘a certain religion‘ instead of naming which creed they mean – we here in Indonesia can usually figure it out, but overseas readers are left to try to discern whether Jehovah’s Witnesses or Zen Buddhists are involved…big hint – they’re not!

    It’s deliberate, craven media dishonesty.

    ========

    Evi’s final words are puzzling.

I used to be proud of calling myself a liberal.

Why anyone would say such a thing is beyond me. Liberalism is naught to be proud of.

    However, there’s hope.

Now, I am not so sure anymore.

She should make up her mind, and, if she hates hypocrisy so much, resign from the Jakarta Post.

Jakarta Post Equates Islam With Islamist Fanaticism!

A prominent headline in the Jakarta Post this week briefly gladdened my heart…

    Apology from Jakarta Post

    oooooooooo

    sorry

    ————

    But only briefly.

I had hoped their Editor, Endy, had finally decided to say sorry for the JP’s failure to condemn the Hitlerian book-burning committed a couple of years ago by his newspaper’s parent company, Gramedia, at the behest of Islamist fanatics.

Now I wake up this sunny Saturday and wonder if we’ll see another apology soon for THIS indefensible headline.

    ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

More celebrities, rock stars turn to Islam

    000000000000000000000000000

This alarming news had me worried.

    …………….

    • TURNER JAGGER
    • ………..
    • Was Mick Jagger about to undertake a pilgrimage to Mecca – I’d much prefer him to bring the Stones to Jakarta so I could enjoy their brilliant music once again.

Was, perhaps, k d lang, the Canadian lesbian, about to cover her glorious beauty (!) with a burka?

    ———

    Not so!

In fact the JP report is not, as far as I can see, about apostasy at all.

    ……..

    Apostasy_myspace

    ……………..

None of the celeb singers etc. mentioned ( I may be wrong but am open to correction) are Christian or Hindu or Buddhist. It seems that the people concerned are by no means ‘converts.’

    On the contrary.

Up till recently, they have, apparently, been like the Indonesian Muslims I mingle with every day, nice, normal people who say their prayers but don’t shove their religion down other folks’ throats.

What the JP means by ‘turning to Islam’ is that they have endorsed the most extreme and fanatical outlooks, most notably (for stars of the music industry)

Kang Ucay, the former lead singer of Bandung-based pop-punk band Rockcalled et Rockers, who now goes by the name of Noor Al Kautsar, serves as the coordinator for the Bandung chapter of Indonesia Tanpa JIL (Indonesia Without JIL). Indonesia Tanpa JIL is a conservative Islamist movement opposed to the liberal Islam, promoted in Indonesia by Jaringan Islam Liberal (Liberal Islam Network)  http://www.thejakartapost.com/life/2016/05/27/more-celebrities-rock-stars-turn-to-islam.html

For ‘conservative,’ please read radical. Conservatism means attachment to traditional values, which in Indonesia are distinguished by an easy-going tolerance among creeds.

In fact, there’s much misuse of the term Islamisation here, when what’s meant is Arabisation. Though to be fair to Arabs, many of them enjoy music, unlike another gaggle of celebs cited by the JP, viz.

Some other musicians who have decided to lay down their instruments recently set up a movement and identified themselves as Al Ghuroba, or The Strangers. These former musicians’ primary campaign theme is the prohibition of music.

    ———–

Of course, we have often covered kill-joy nonsense, most often from Aceh, the only Indonesian province with sharia law…

‘Immoral Activities – Sitting in Coffee Shops Laughing and Talking…’

    =

    Mustafa-Ahmad-Ketua-MPU-Kabupaten-Aceh-Utara.

Aceh’s Mad Mullah – ‘Dancing is EVIL – It Involves Body Movements!’

    —————

…but also from other parts of the archipelago…

Islamist Kill-Joys, Buoyed by Gaga Ban, Now Turn On Indonesian Stars

However, outwith the ranks of frothing fanatics like that mullah, Indonesians, Muslim or not, DELIGHT in music, especially dangdut, this country’s most beloved genre.

I append one example of the many popular practitioners. She’s named Cynthiara Alona. And she’s Aceh-born!

    ..

    ===============

She’s a great dangdut singer – since foreign readers know little or nothing of that music, I’ve searched around and got you a link to one of her performances.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsHfGZPh624

Dangdut tv shows command audiences of millions, and, in a 90% Muslim country, most of them are likely to be Muslims.

The Jakarta Post headline is surely a slur on all those who adore their music and see no inconsistency with adherence to their faith.

Why should a handful of fanaticised ‘celebrities’ opting for outlandish extremes be said to be ‘turning to Islam?’

The JP should issue another of its rare apologies!

I’m of course NOT Muslim – as regular readers will have long since guessed! – but my final quote comes from a prominent Muslim who ought to know what he’s talking about.

Syafiq Hasyim of the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarief Hidayatullah said that celebrities’ newfound piety, especially those who chose to become preachers, may be motivated by pragmatism.

“There are two types of piety, exclusive and inclusive and the latter is always better. But I suspect that for some of those preachers, they have financial motivations,” Syafiq said.

I thought you’d get onto this one, Ross.
I take strong exception to that Jakarta Post headline but since Gramedia is famous for supporting those fanatics in book-burning, I cant be very surprised if they think growing those awful long beards and hating music is ‘turning to Islam.’ Pity whoever wrote that article didnt put his name to it.

I dont know a single Indonesian Muslim who hates music the way these former musicians do.

Keep reminding us about the book-burning episode please.
Its important more and more people overseas understand what kind of people run that media empire.

It is very truly an insult from the Jakarta Post to million of Indonesia people

Mister Ross, you write many things that are good here but sometime I think you are not so clever if you beleive that oneday the Jakarta Post will say that what Gramedia did to burn the books is bad.
I sometime think my boss is stupid and even bad but i do not say this because he pays my salary each month and I must look after my family
Jakarta Post do not have bravery to tell what they think about Gramedia because Gramedia is Jakarta Post big boss. Do not hope for that editor to do what he should do. He too has family to look after.

I hate the Jakarta Post, they always make me angry to read and now I tell my other Muslim friends what they say about this turning to Islam, like Islam is all things same like Arab Saudi.
All of us we are children of Indonesia not Arab Saudi and we like dangdut and jazz and some like reggae. That is not to be less Muslim than the selebriti that hates music and fun.
You also some days writing things make me not so happy but you today do good job in this.

Ross, I read your blog a lot and I know your heart is in the right place but –

you have lived there so long you have let your judgment get clouded.

It doesn’t matter how much ‘ordinary Muslims’ don’t care for this fanatic music-hating crowd, they aren’t going to do much of anything to put a stop to what you call ‘arabisation.’

I have seen you time after time give us news of violent intolerant Islamists and some of the people will raise their voices against it but the government and the police hardly ever make any moves to get rid of the problem.
I think if you stay in Indonesia much longer, you will see it become an Islamic republic, shariah everywhere.

What will you do then, Ross?

This is Wahabism not Indonesian Islam. We do not like this and do not like Jakarta Post saying this is all about these singers turning to Islam. They to me are turning away from the ways of Indonesia, Muslim or all religion here..
Jakarta Post is most like American newspaper, not Indonesian newspaper and always not thinking like usual Indonesian people who like music and do not like to burn books.
My friends show me this your blog so I send you my agreement.
I wish you can blog in bahasa Indonesia because I can say many more things about all this but thank you and I am in support yours sincerely.Farida .

      Interesting but sad reading.
Why do these poor souls get into this dark mindset?
In the West, we see so many musicians turning to drugs, now here we see so many musicians turning to this, which as you show us, isn’t Islam as understood by most Indonesian Muslims.
Music must be a bad way of life if it drives people into these kinds of behavior.

The Muslims will do what we must do to make Indonesia a cleaner and holier country.
If you do not like what you hear and see, go to a heathen country to see naked women and hear your music.
No real Muslim will want to have these things in Indonesia.

Bravo, Jokowi – No Crawling To Unrepentant Red Rats!

Great to see the Jakarta Post has failed in its tireless campaigning…

Jakarta Post’s ‘Red Apology’ Clique Getting Desperate?

. … on behalf of the unrepentant red vermin of the PKI (Indonesian Communist Party)

    ————

    pkiposter Vicious PKI thugs

    ———–

President Jokowi has now made it unequivocally clear that the government would not apologize to the now defunct Indonesian Communist Party

Jokowi said his government will focus on the future by developing the nation to gain competitiveness with other countries, not looking back on the country’s past…

    ——

    jokowi-twitter

Jokowi –  “…nobody will apologize to PKI,” he said.

    000000000000000000000

Personally I’ve always been able to see the case for some kind of statement of regret aimed at the innocent people who suffered because of the PKI.

I mean poor folk victimised for just being related to reds, or falsely accused of being reds.

One must also have sympathy for the hundreds of thousands killed because the PKI duped them into their labour and peasant collaborationist fronts.

That no such conclusion has come about is surely the fault of the Jakarta Post ( and some other media) which failed totally to draw a distinction between those hapless folk and the actual villains of the piece…

    communism tyranny

…the Communists, many of whom, aged but still evil, have STILL not repudiated the totalitarian hypocrisy which was (and of course still is) the essence of marxism everywhere. .

If the comsymp scribblers had drawn that distinction, some sort of apology might well have been forthcoming.

Jakarta Post Demophobes’ Europhiliac Links Exposed!

As one would expect, the leftist editorial clique who run the Jakarta Post has chosen to provide a platform for a pair of un-elected demophobes to rail against the Brexit victory in the UK.

    the-jakarta-post

That clique in Palmerah runs the JP as if it’s an integral part of the U.S. East Coast left-lib media cabal, churning out the New York Times’ and the Washington Post’s sort of pinko pap.

They’re entitled to pursue their running-dog role but the perennial biases would surely be less unpalatable if they offered equal space to some Brit from Vote Leave or Leave EU as an antidote to Ririn Sefsani and Patrick Ziegenhain’s ranting.

And who are these people anyway?

The JP tells us a little…

    ==========

     Ririn

    =================

Ririn Sefsani is program manager for Kemitraan (Partnership for Governance Reform) in Jakarta.

That’s an NGO – and it might have been more upfront if Ririn had mentioned that under Kemitraan’s list of DONORS we see this unpleasant but very telling sight.

    ====================================================================================

    DONORS to Kemitraan.

    ==========

Well, Ririn’s contribution to that JP anti-Brexit bleat must be appreciated in Brussels, though they no doubt expect no less from those employed in outfits they fund!

    And the other co-author?

Patrick Ziegenhain is visiting professor at the Asia-Europe Institute, the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur.

    ———–

     The Pinko Prof

    ——-

If you check out HIS background – WOW!

He’s been a busy boy, with many teaching posts to his credit.

But here’s the interesting part, filed under –

    Memberships in Professional Organizations.

Jean Monnet Association for EU Studies

    Oh, THAT LOT!

    Remember?

EU guidelines on applying for the chairs do not appear to explicitly dictate what political slant applicants must have, although a handbook describes one of the aims of the Jean Monnet programme as to create “increased interest in understanding and participating in the European Union…”

an essay written in 2014 by Joseph Weiler, a Jean Monnet chaired professor at New York University law school… stated that “part of our mission as [a] Jean Monnet Professor is to disseminate the values of European integration.”

    ========

    Professor J.H.H. Weiler
    ———

The EU Commission “think of us openly as intellectual ambassadors of the Union and its values”, he wrote in The Future of EU Studies, a report of the 2014 Jean Monnet conference.

“Most of us become Jean Monnet professors because, in complicated ways, we believe in European integration,” he wrote. “It is not only a professional commitment to many of us, but also a kind of credo; for example, when the European Union is criticised, our instinct is to defend it.”

    https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/european-union-eu-funded-professors-deny-claims-of-bias-from-brexit-campaigners

Maybe the Prof in KL should have opened up on his ideological baggage. It’s certainly something readers of his Jakarta Post joint diatribe ought to be aware of, as they ponder the duo’s blast against patriot movements in Britain and Europe.

In times of globalization, the British voted for a self-imposed isolation.

The British referendum may serve as proof that campaigns of fear and scaremongering can be successful if a majority of voters follow the statements of nationalist and populist groups.

    hogwashmeterred

Brits did NOT vote for anything like a ‘self-imposed isolation.’

Few if any Brits want to quit NATO or the Commonwealth. And they haven’t.

Moreover, last night I watched UKIP’s Nigel Farage in Brussels, re-iterating that Brits were more than willing to trade with any other country…

    ….

    Jackboot

    ……………….

… but most unwilling to be ruled by anyone other than the government they elect for themselves!

Contrary to that fatuous assertion by Ririn and her professorial comrade, Brits took their very clear majority decision…

    ========

    =======

…DESPITE the REMAIN campaign of fear and scar-mongering.

Who wouldn’t rather follow the statements of nationalist and populist groups?

Such groups give priority to their own fellow-citizens, not to a supranational elite.

    Juncker no democratic choice

    • The European Union was and is an ANTI-Democratic construct, which hates and fears being subjected to referenda.
    • That’s the evil Monnet’s legacy.

We most of us are well aware that Jean Monnet is regarded as one of the founding fathers of the Brussels supranational grand design.

He was a contemptible man, who hated and feared the common people. He was desperate to keep them in the dark about what he and his ilk were up to.

    oooooooooo

    nazi-eu-hitler

    ——–

No sooner had Hitler’s Third Reich version of European Union crashed and burned than the oily French Founder of the European Movement was hard at work on a Fourth Reich, as dismissive of democracy as the Third.

    • ————
    • Jean Monnet
    • ———–
    • We quote his words again.
“Europe’s nations should be guided towards the super-state without their people understanding what is happening.

This can be accomplished by successive steps each disguised as having an economic purpose, but which will eventually and irreversibly lead to federation.”

      Jean Monnet

…The EU is built on liberal values and pooled sovereignty…This achievement is increasingly threatened..

    Achievement?

A monstrosity, more like, built on denial of democracy, as per the French and Dutch referenda in 2005. They rejected the EuroCon, only to have it thrust back upon them via the Lisbon Treaty.

    • elite arrogance-s

And both peoples have subsequently been refused any further referenda on the issue!

    ……………

    393a3-yorkregioonalpoliceprotest

    …liberal values…?

People have had enough of liberal crap, soft sentences, no capital punishment, parole for rapists, illegals caught in the act then put up in hotels….

    Liberalism is a disease!

But it’s just what the doctor ordered, to Europhiliacs like Ririn and The Prof.

SO much more fun than nationalist right-wing populism that denies the equality of humans and demands privileges for members of the ethnic and religious majority group.

They note, however, the nostalgia among those dreadful older voters, who can actually recall when Brits last ran their own country.

The DD deplores this, and adores how decades of vicious indoctrination has led to so many brain-washed young voters feeling much less national pride.

The Jakarta Post’s Horrible Hate Headline!

    ahok Governor Ahok

By the way … Ahok deserves both hate and adoration

    ————–
I have to say, the Jakarta Post must be one of the most irksome newspapers in Indonesia
My conclusion arises from the latest opinion piece, last Saturday, by its veteran big-shot Kornelius Purba…
    —-
    kornelius-purba Kornelius Purba
….a disturbing outburst, based on his  recent chat with an intolerant Islamist crony, whose bitter hostility to Jakarta’s popular Governor Ahok is variously attributed to his race, his religion and his ‘big mouth.’ These short-comings, it seems, mean that Ahok ‘deserves hate.’
Taking the last excuse first, it’s fair to say that Ahok, unlike so many mealy-mouthed notables here, doesn’t mince his words.
Fanatic Islamist Wails At Christian Governor – “He Calls People Names!”
How often do we read police chiefs saying they want to prevent ‘unwanted things,’ when they mean mayhem by sectarian thug gangs?
How often do we read journalists talk about ‘certain groups’ or even ‘a certain religion,’ rather than name the likely source of likely whining or worse?
    ———–
Too often, my own conversations with local people on this topic get responses like ‘it’s the Javanese non-confrontational habit.’
     ——————
But it seems Pak Kornelius’ fanatic friend ( a fan of the extremist PKS pro-shariah party, whose erstwhile leader penned an infamous paean of adoration to jihadist mass-murderer Osama Bin Laden)…
        https://rossrightangle.wordpress.com/2011/07/06/brits-banned-michael-savage-but-let-in-top-jakarta-islamist-author-of-odious-ode-to-911-mass-murderer/
…doesn’t mince words about the man he loathes for being a Chinese ethnic ‘infidel’  (that means Christian, BTW – Kornelius is one of those but maybe he’s an exception to his friend’s hate-rule)
    ———-
Okay, it’s more than fair to hate some people.
    adams_128183a_1
Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein/IRA terrorist leader, should be hated by all decent people. Terror Gang Leader Adams, Complicit in Child Molesting – ‘A Man Sent by God?’
But for our JP king-pin’s pal, mereIy the colour of Ahok’s skin and the way he worships God are sufficient grounds.
Of course Ahok makes mistakes, and I haven’t hesitated to say so…

”Outrageous” Activity in Jakarta Pools? OMG – BIKINIS!

…so I can hardly say I ‘love’ him. But only neanderthal nitwits could possibly ‘hate’ him.

Jakarta Jew-Haters Boo Chinese Christian Candidate

How can the JP’s KP seriously assert that his racist and bigoted  companion’s ‘stance is valid..?’
    Unbelievable!
Here’s a quote from the Dark Ager whom Kornelius likes to hang out with.
“To be honest with you, my faith forbids me from tolerating such a person…”
    ———–
    islamophobia-21
    …………………

That’s the kind of crap that encourages people to support Trump’s ban-all-Muslims call – which I personally don’t, you may recall.

It’s loyalty and principles that matter, not ethnicity or creed. For example, I detest the white and allegedly Christian Justin Turdo….

    ————

    JustinTrudeau

Canada’s Enemy Within – Will Turdeau “Have To Look at The Root Causes?”

….and if the ( improbable) chance ever arose, I’d see him replaced overnight with the patriot Canadian Muslim Tarek Fateh, who admirably declared, on the question of talking to Killer Khadr.

    – First of all, he must renounce jihad and the application of jihad and sharia law.”  .

    ——-

    TarekTarek Fateh

A Muslim Voice of Reason – Khadr May Return, IF………!!!!

    ————

The thing is, even KP’s buddy admits Ahok offers clean government (and clean rivers!) yet he would likely continue to dislike Ahok… – just because he looks different, worships differently and says what he really thinks when he witnesses sloth, corruption or religious persecution.

Kornelius Purba ought to be ashamed of himself. He should be condemning his pal’s vicious and venomous views.

But then I have yet to see him publish a word of condemnation of his Jakarta Post’s parent company, Gramedia, notorious collaborators with the worst Islamist intolerants in Indonesia.

    PS

The last time Pak Kornelius merited mention here on RRA, it was, by curious coincidence, when he threw the H word around a couple of years ago…

Jakarta Post ‘s “Thousand Reasons to Hate Australia!”

…and he was gracious enough to comment and say that he actually didn’t ‘hate’ Australia, quite the contrary. He also invited me to drop in to his HQ for a chat, which didn’t happen due to no fault on his part or mine.

However, this time he’s described in detail a real hater, so I’ll be interested to see if he comments again.
