International Women’s Day, March 8th – Indonesia Beruntung!
————
If we are to take seriously our observation of International Women’s Day tomorrow, it’s useful to remind ourselves why Indonesia is especially lucky in that respect, so many magnificent women here to impress us on a daily basis, wherever we go in Jakarta.

- Duo Anggrek (saw them on tv last night -stunning!)
- ——————
- I’d like to include a photo of little Lia, who works in a nearby branch of Indomaret, gorgeous and friendly each time she hands me my supply of Bohem from the cigarette counter.
- But I won’t – she’d just blush and get teased by her colleagues in the minimart.

- Or the many other beautiful blossoms who flourish in this sprawling city.
- On the buses across town, re-stocking the shelves in Carrefour, smiling among the shirts on sale in Matahari, or manning (?) the small shops in Blok M Square, Permata Hijau, and every other mall in the capital.
But no need to embarrass them. Their more famous celebrity sisters can be their ambassadors today, photos I have used before and take pleasure from re-featuring this otherwise run-of-the-mill morning.

And just to show I’m not Islamophobic!
There are a few, very few, of these in Jakarta!

Of course I could include a lot of stern-faced girls in politics, the arts and science… – but there are media galore who’ll be doing that.
Best just to relax and enjoy RRA’s selection here.

And if those events do not appeal to you, I have been told that, on Tuesdays, there are Ladies’ Nights in the Mo Bar, at the Mandarin Oriental, and at Molly Malone’s, at Senayan.
Some of us guys should drop by those places this week to pay our respects to the opposite sex – ooops, gender!

I suppose you think it’s very droll to trivialize a day set aside to honor female achievement and promote the eradication of archaic gender roles.
You are quite deliberately mocking the purpose and symbolism of IWD.
Nobody concerned with equality is laughing with you but some of us are laughing at you, in particular your crude sexist imagery, which appeals only to neanderthal men like yourself..

Ten out of ten for this one, though, Ross. Indonesian women deserve all the praise you give them, and more.
Vanessa sounds jealous!
