There are ways to frame discussion on this.

We would say it’s a cleansing process, which shows our sympathies with the reformists.

An impartial reporter might talk about ‘change’ or ‘reform.’

But not Gulliver Cragg, who chose to prattle about the government’s plan to –

Switzerland has slammed shut its open-door policy toward Eritreans which had automatically granted them refugee status.

In announcing its decision on Thursday, the Swiss federal administrative court in St Gallen said the lax policy was unjustified. It had also been criticized by several Swiss politicians who claimed it was being abused.

If a foreigner needs to renew his visa here in Indonesia, the most wearisome aspect is that he can’t! It needs to be renewed overseas, as a rule in Singapore, because it’s the nearest foreign country. Most kinds of work visas have to be issued abroad (except of course tourists)

It’s annoying and costly but it’s the law, so we obey it.

Suppose, back in the day,  I had flouted the law and sneaked back in on a little fishing boat from the city-state to Batam or some northern port in Sumatra. I’d have saved bureaucratic hassle UNLESS I got caught, then I’d be in big trouble.

Congrats, Court! Oz Judges Rule Bludgers’ Boat Detention OK!

Detention of 157 Tamil asylum seekers on board ship ruled lawful

Good news from Australia in the Guardian yesterday –  The high court has ruled that the detention of 157 Tamil asylumseekers at sea for a month was lawful.

The plan was to have them returned to India, which of course is not only a democratic country and a fellow-Commonwealth member-nation but also has a Tamil state (Tamil Nadu) wherein these crimmigrants would have felt perfectly at home.

Perfect?

EXCEPT for the absence of the fabulous Australian tax-payers, into whose bottomless benefit trough their snouts could not have reached from India’s sunny shores!

Thanks, alas, to the shrills of Un-Australian agit-prop groups, they were not despatched back there, where they belong.

So, although they ended up offshore, they have managed to sink their fangs into other people’s hard-earned tax-cash.

However, a court win for common-sense is not to be sniffed at.
