But although there was a change ( non-contentiou) to Silent Night, all went well, secure as we sang because the police were at the gates aplenty to watch for any troublesome sorts.
Today, in a few hours, I’ll be up and at ‘em.
Time then for Christmas Dinner, as good as I can rustle up with the help of my ever-welcome guest.
We intend to enjoy ourselves.

Having got home VERY early this Christmas Morning after belting out carols in the English Church in Menteng ( which was heavily guarded by Jakarta’s Finest!) I have only now risen and figured I should send off my greetings to everyone.
It’s been a good year in many ways….

Just got back from the Carol Service, and am very tired.
Can’t complain about the sermon, or the cake afterwards, but MUST complain about the silly PC mangling of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen!
- Nowadays that grand old favourite has been purged of sexism, the offensive line replaced by ‘God Rest You Merry People All!’
I of course sang the proper words.
“Enough, you lot!”
- Next it’ll be prayers to ‘God, the Parent, the Child and…?’

As for the carol, I agree with you. God and Jesus were and are for everyone, male and female – ‘people’ – but the whole appeal of going to a carol service is because it’s an old traditional way to celebrate Christmas, and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is a great carol that dates back at least a century.
Why change it just because some feminists don’t like it? Many churches are not very democratic, so no real ballot of parishioners was ever held, not among Anglicans or Presbyterians, at least.
I don’t know about other denominations, maybe they still sing the original words.
