‘Scholars’ Vexed By ‘Religious School’ Report!

    A shocking ( perhaps) report from Indonesia’s National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT)…

    BNPT Logo.jpg

that there are at least 198 Islamic boarding schools suspected of being affiliated with terrorists, both local and international terrorism networks –

..has just been released by the BNPT’s Komjen, Boy Rafli Amar, but, regrettably, he chose not to name the ‘pondok pesantren‘ concerned..

However, he did give a breakdown of the sectarian vermin factions…

    The Evil Within

..to which they were linked. viz.

    – 1 affiliated with the Jamaah Anshorut Khilafah (JAK).
    – 119 with Anshorut Daulah or ISIS sympathizers
    – and 68 with Jemaah Islamiyah (JI).

But hardly had the BNPT revelations hit the headlines, than a notable from the state-sponsored MUI…

…the ‘Indonesian Scholars Council,’ Secretary General, Amirsyah Tambunan, ‘questioned the data.’

    Amirsyah Tambunan

.“On what basis is the data collection, what is the methodology, is it the result of an official study by the BNPT?”

    Those are not unreasoable questions.

But then Amirsyah went on to claim that the BNPT had the potential to cause unrest for the surrounding community.

Not only that, BNPT’s exposure will actually make the community less safe and comfortable.”

What exactly does the MUI man mean?

If he were to call for each suspect ‘religious school’ to be named, so that decent parents could remove their offspring from undesirable influences, I’d agree and applaud.

    But on the contrary!

Amirsyah wants the BNPT to make sure that…

‘...this information does not appear in public!”

Then, sad to say, he played the ”Islamophobia’ card.

He asked BNPT to explain to the public so as not to cause negative stigma, especially for Islamic boarding schools.

Let’s note at this point that this is hardly the first time..

Lukman Slams Pesantren Fanatics – Can One Brave Man Slay The Hydra?I

slamist Pesantren Leaders in Indonesia – Pluralist or Primitive?

….that these ‘religious schools’ have caused concern.

To be fair to Amirsyah, he also said MUI was all for ‘religious moderation according to the principles of justice and equality for the benefit of the people and the nation.’

    But then?

I invite all parties to stop the narrative of cornering certain groups with Islamophobia…”

    Oh dear!

As a ‘scholar,’ he ought to know that, ‘Islamophobia’ is a word quite recently invented, to suppress criticism of his creed.

“There’s No Such Thing as Islamophobia. Critique of religion is a fundamental Western right, not an illness.”

Most of you would probably agree!

Any and every creed should be up for criticism.

But Amirsyah’s comments got me thinking about a previous MUI intervention.

I can’t have been the only one who recalled what they had to say when an evil bigot, behind bars for good reason…

“A Wise And Noble Step?” Islamic ‘Scholars’ On Terrorist Unleashed In Indonesia!

…and although happily that release did not come to pass…

    Child-Marriage And Indonesia’s “Scholars!”

We have often had to comment on the words and actions of the MUI….

Death To Corruptors, MUI? Why Not Terrorists?

    …Indonesia’s Council of ‘Scholars’ – a state-subsidised body.

They are not backward about coming forward with opinions on just about anything…

“A Wise And Noble Step?” Islamic ‘Scholars’ On Terrorist Unleashed In Indonesia!

Syamsul Maarif,  General Secretary of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Jakarta

“If the act of adultery is by a married person, then stoning is the sentence, while if unmarried, then it’s whipping,” he said.

Cops – “Islamist ‘Scholars’ Can Veto Religious Liberty”

Islamist ‘Scholars’ – “Don’t Complain if You’re Attacked!”

and it’s fair to say that I have rarely agreed with their pronouncements.

This month, however, they are in the news again, after a 15-year-old child, a student from the State Junior High School (SMPN) 01 Namrole, South Buru, Maluku…

    Location of Maluku in Indonesia

    Location of Maluku in Indonesia

….was married off by her father, who is the Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in South Buru.

The Head of the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) was also present at the event.

Needless to say, this has caused much comment.

Most Indonesians, of all creeds, are civilised people…

…to whom the idea of child marriage is repugnant.

I waited patiently for several days to see exactly what would happen in regard to this ‘marriage,’ which had not, it seems, been officially registered..

    Update! Good News!

Good kids – students from one of the junior high schools in Buru Selatan, Maluku and teachers demonstrating against the early marriage that happened to a student at the school.

The chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of South Buru Regency, Maluku, Ambo Intan Karate has officially canceled the marriage of his daughter, who is still in junior high school, with an ustaz from Tangerang, Banten, named Latif
NB ‘Ustaz’ is the word for Muslim cleric.

So has this father undergone some kind of spiritual revelation?

Ambo admitted that he canceled his daughter’s marriage due to mediation by the South Buru Regency Government and the local education office.. https://amp.kompas.com/regional/read/2021/10/13/173042478/batalkan-pernikahan-putrinya-yang-masih-smp-ketua-mui-buru-selatan-semoga

Garut Gals Will Cheer You Up – Unless You’re A Kill-Joy!

Pretty dismal news on all fronts, and, sadly predictably, when something very un-dismal happens, the kill-joys start braying.

Garut is located in Indonesia’s West Java province, a source of much unpleasant news over the years…

Ahmadi Koran burned by Islamists in Cisalada, 2011

…but here’s a sight to cheer up all normal people, guys at least!

HEBOH TARIAN EROTIS DI GARUT, Ditonton Ratusan Laki-laki, Wakil Bupati Jengkel, MUI Sebut Haram

Dancers at Garut Culture Fest, a week ago.

    Great stuff, yeah?

But we read in  Tribunnews.com that –

The dancing of those girls evoked controversy from the citizenry of Garut.

The local ‘scholars’ got all fretty.

’The girls’ activity is deemed not to reflect the vision of Garut Regency!’

    Oh dear!

The local Majelis Ulama Indonesia (MUI) chairman, Sirodjul Munir, holds that whoever staged this ‘must take responsibilty, because the show does not accord with Garut culture. Moreover, the dancing could be seen by minors!’

It’s clearly haram! It has disturbed the morality of the people.”

    Like, uh, which people?

The audience didn’t seem at all upset, and since there is no nudity evident in the video…

…though it’s hard to tell, because the video is blighted by the imposition of opaque intrusions, similar to the way state censors here blur cleavage when a bar-maid in a film bends forward!

    ….why bring minors into it?

Do West Java folks never wear shorts?

Sadly, it appears that the deputy regent joined in the whining, regrets galore!

The MUI man is no doubt a worthy successor to the gent who held the same position nine years ago…

…who objected to the lovely Miss Universe contestant pictured above, and we are all too familiar with the thinking of the ‘scholars…

Pancasila? Seven Years Post-Cikeusik, Ahmadis Still Suffer

It was on February 6th, 2011, not so very far from Jakarta, that the infamous Cikeusik Pogrom occurred, three innocent Ahmadis….

Cikeusik – cowardly scum commit sectarian murder

Watch the pigs at their bloody work on this link..   http://www.liveleak.com/view.

…savagely bludgeoned to death by a mob of cowardly Islamist fanatics.

Victim of Islamist Murder Mob Gets Six Months in the Slammer

We lament this atrocity every year and remind all prepared to listen that no justice has yet been done, no charges of murder brought against the swine responsible.

But the persecution of, the denial of religious liberty to, this peaceful and decent community continues today.

    It’s never stopped.

Just put ‘Ahmadis’ into our search box over there to the right and you can see the endless saga of vicious sectarianism that afflicts them.

Just a week or so ago, just a few miles from where I live, just across the city limits that separate Jakarta from Tangerang in the Province of Banten, Islamist bigotry reared its ugly head,

I quote from the local newspaper.

Pemuda Pancasila (PAP) Ciputat, accompanied residents and a number of community leaders to reject the construction of the Ahmadiyah Jemaah Mosque in Ciputat,  South Tangerang, on Saturday (20/01/2018)

Dampingi Warga Serua Indah, Pemuda Pancasila Tolak Pembangunan Masjid Jemaah Ahmadiyah

Their rejection of the Ahmadiyah Mosque was also demonstrated by the installation of banners at the entrance of the empty land.

Needless to say, the notorious thug-gang, the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) was reportedly present. But that’s par for the course whenever intolerance is in the air.

FPI in West Java – ‘Let’s Burn Out the Orphans!’

    Eager to kill!

IslamoNazi Gauleiter – “Women Already Have Limitations, Let Alone Non-Muslims!”

Again, search ‘FPI’ and you’ll see what we mean.

It was the presence of the Pemuda Pancasila that caught my attention more than anything else.

Pemuda simply means Youth, but Pancasila is Indonesia’s national ideology, a key tenet of which is pluralism, respect for all Indonesians’ right to worship Almighty God.

Except it seems, if they upset the so-called ‘scholars’ of the MUI, the Indonesian Scholars Council, whose fatwas are sometimes just laughable…

    …but not always.

The bigoted fatwa they unleashed some years ago against the Ahmadis has been invoked by fanatics over and over to stomp their right to worship, often by wicked, violent means.

So an outfit using the word Pancasila ought to be defending religious liberty, you’d think. Instead, astonishingly, the PP spokesman at the scene declared that –

” Then the basis of our rejection was quite clear, that there is no last Prophet other than the Prophet Muhammad SAW, “said Abdul Aziz.

Another protester told the media –

“So in addition to the rejection of the construction of the mosque, we also reject the Ahmadiyah congregation…”.

So the objection to the proposed Ahmadi mosque is NOT based on anything that you or I would deem planning grounds, no access problems, no infrastructure problems, no…

It’s purely because the peaceful minority holds views at variance with Islamist dogma. Very sad, that seven years after the Cikeusik Pogrom, there’s no sign of any mind-set revolution in Tangerang, nor in many other places…

“Mohon Ma’af?” Blasphemous Brutes Vandalise Depok Mosque!

In Squalid Internal Exile, Lombok Ahmadis Denied Voting Rights

…nor of any moves by the Government to quash the grotesque discriminatory Tri-Ministerial Decree which has made the Ahmadis second class citizens, and in some cases refugees, in their own country, of which they are loyal and law-abiding citizens.

PS – here’s a list of examples of oppression which we reproduced last year –In Jakarta, Persecuted Ahmadis Seek Justice!  – there have been other incidents since then.

    Indonesia’s Morning After – What’s MinahExit Mean?

A sudden flurry of reports about something we have frankly never heard of before, the Gerakan Referendum Minahasa.

    That’s the Minahasa Referendum  Movement.

And Minahasa refers to the ethnic group, largely Christian by faith, and good soldiers by tradition, who live in North Sulawesi.

That’s also where the admirable protest took place against the arrival of an Islamist fanatic not long ago.

Manado Mayhem! Jakarta Post Flouts Its Own ‘Bold’ Motto?

But it wasn’t till very recently that this GMR movement hit the headlines.

Again, it’s important to note the coincidence of its appearance with the shocking imprisonment of the Christian Governor of Jakarta on bizarre ‘blasphemy’ charges.

No coincidence at all, really, because the driving force behind bringing Ahok to trial was an Islamist fanatic cabal, IslamoNazi FPI leaders in cahoots with the self-styled ‘scholars’ of the MUI.

Indonesian Press Day,’ 9th Feb – Fake News? If Only!

Ahok behind bars symbolises the growing power of intolerance – if you can’t utter a quote from the Koran in public without risking draconian punishment, how many Christians, or Hindus, or Buddhists, can be expected to feel at ease in a society which thus degrades pluralism.

The thing people overseas need to remember is that while Indonesia may be the largest Muslim majority country in the world, it’s also home to significant minorities of non-Muslims.

Bali, for example, is a Hindu island, while large Christian communities flourish in Ambon, North Sulawesi,Kalimatan (Borneo) and Sumatra ,where there are tough Bataks and a large Chinese ethnic minority in Medan. There’s also the Catholic island of Flores.

And even in Jakarta, up to 10% of the capital’s population may be Christian, Buddhist or other religions.

Sensible Indonesian leaders have always understood this and so religious tolerance was always not simply a moral focus but a recognition of how to keep the country together. That common-sense approach existed from the start, through Sukarno’s personality cult regime and Suharto’s dictatorship.

    General Suharto

Now, however, fanatics have become a major influence in Indonesian politics. We have seen examples aplenty in recent years, outrageous intolerance against Buddhists…

Tanjung Balai’s Burning Temples – A History of Bigotry!

…Hindus… Bali Hindu King – Don’t Kill Our Cows! Muslim ‘Scholars’ – Get Lost!!  …

….and of course Christians. Oppressed Christians In The Street Heat, In Pluralist Indonesia

Under President SBY a ferocious discriminatory diktat was issued, the anti-Ahmadiyah Tri-Ministerial Decree, and despite President Jokowi’s talk of pluralism, persecuted Christians in Bogor, Bekasi, etc have had no justice.

X-Rated Xmas – Foul-Mouths Bully Christians, As ‘Moderate’Mayor Denies They Exist!’

The imprisonment of Ahok for ‘blasphemy’ has confirmed for many people, not just religious minorities but decent Muslims, true Indonesian conservatives who cling to the traditional tolerance referred to above, that one day, in the not too distant future, they could rise from their beds to the waking nightmare of an Islamic Republic.

If that were to happen, then separatism could, would, be a serious threat.

Again, please note, Indonesia does not, like the UK, afford separatists all normal rights and privileges.

    SNP separatist leader Nicola Sturgeon

If some local equivalent of that ghastly Scots shrew Sturgeon started shrilling for ‘independence’ for any province or island, she’d be charged with treason, and if convicted, she’d have some real problems to whine about.

In June 2007 in Ambon, these RMS political prisoners danced the Cakalele and raised the RMS flag in front of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono…

RMS Political Prisoners Reunite With Families After 7-Year Wait

Hardly surprising therefore that the local cops in Sulawesi were vigorously denying any sign of separatism, despite news photos clearly depicting referendum banners.

Hasil gambar untuk spanduk gerakan referendum minahasa

But this ‘separatism,’ if separatism it is, is the inevitable consequence of Islamist intolerance. When decent folk of any religion see blood-thirsty fanatics treated as respectable notables by leading politicians, they recoil in disgust.

But when that disgust is compounded by the realisation that their fundamnetal right to worship as they please is therefore under  threat, and when their form of worship corresponds to their local cultural heritage…?

What else can the Government expect?

I am no supporter of separatism. How the people of Indonesia arrange their affairs is up to them, and from 1945 they have generally been quite gifted in working out ways to live together.

But I do hope, as somebody who has lived here happily for the best part of twenty years and has watched ever more sadly the rise of Islamist intolerance, that somebody in the corridors of power in Jakarta can, even at this eleventh hour, reverse the process of jihadist Arabisation.

    Viva Pancasila!

Ain’t Just Ahok – More Indonesian Dissenters Behind Bars!

While the strange spectacle of a 21st Century ‘blasphemy trial’ rumbles on in Jakarta, with the city’s Christian Governor Ahok facing a possible five year sentence for a humorous quip about a Koranic verse – yes, seriously!..

    Governor Ahok

“We encourage the government to process the death penalty for Ahok as soon as possible,” said Rizieq

Good Muslims Speak Up For Threatened Christian Governor

…there’s more bleak news for those of us who love Indonesia.

In another Jakarta court, three men arrested for their involvement in the Gafatar movement, whose activities we have covered over recent years, most recently when we wrote the following…

    GAFATAR_GERAKAN_FAJAR_NUSANTARA_33‘Movement of the Indonesian Dawn’

We posted on them last year, when some other cops collaborated with a mob of FPI thugs in another Indonesian province. https://rossrightangle.wordpress.com/2012/10/23/islamonazis-arrest-alleged-defamers-cops-collaborate/

Gafatar is abundantly law-abiding and has made every effort to comply with local laws.

“They have sought a permit to be able to conduct their group activities but I have not given it to them,” Johannis said.

    Why not?

Johannis said their initial surveillance showed that the group was aimed at unifying differences in the country while mixing up several religious teachings.

Oh, well, we can’t have that sort of nonsense, can we?

Cops – “Islamist ‘Scholars’ Can Veto Religious Liberty”

…have been sent to prison because – wait for it  – they had “contradicted and offended Islamic values held by most Indonesian citizens.”   http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/03/07/gafatar-leaders-sentenced-to-years-in-prison-for-blasphemy.html

One is tempted to say, so what?

Indonesia’s current head of state, President Jokowi, often tells us how his country, ‘the largest Muslim democracy in the world,’ is ‘pluralist and tolerant.’

“Our constitutional system honors and guarantees diversity and pluralism and it is our task to preserve these..”

Pluralism Guaranteed by Constitution, says Jokowi

Many people had hoped that his campaign slogan ‘A Mind-Set Revolution,’ would herald a break from the oppressive attitudes that prevailed under his predecessor President SBY…

…who had actually suggested that Indonesia’s ‘blasphemy law’ be replicated WORLDWIDE!

Among other considerations, the court noted that prayers were not obligatory in the belief of the Gafatar movement, while the religion’s holy book said prayers were obligatory.

No dissent from Islamic dogma allowed?

And the court’s other excuse for jailing these harmless men?

The judges also pointed to local rejection of the Gafatar movement’s activities in a settlement they had established in Mempawah, Central Kalimantan, as evidence that their belief was disturbing to other people.  http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2017/03/07/gafatar-leaders-sentenced-to-years-in-prison-for-blasphemy.html

    So what, again?

If some people get ‘disturbed’ because they hear opinions different from their own, those ‘disturbed’ would be well advised to grow up – sit down with Gafatar to debate these issues, or better still –

But minding one’s own business, in matters of religious liberty, is a concept foreign to the outfit which needs to be recognised as the driving force behind the slither into a Dark Age.

Yup, you guessed it. Not a government department at all!

The power to veto religious liberty lies, in this ‘tolerant pluralist’ land, with the Islamist self-styled ‘scholars’ of the MUI, the Indonesian Council of Ulemas!.

“If the East Nusa Tenggara MUI does not recognize this group, this Gafatar group, then the government will ask law enforcers to disband the organization and take their leaders to justice,” he said.

I see that the Islamic Central Council of Switzerland has demanded the authorities ‘take Islamophobia seriously’http://www.thelocal.ch/20161221/islamic-council-switzerland-must-take-islamophobia-seriously  – after a young man opened fire at a mosque.

Turns out he was a total nutter, an occult-addict who had just killed an old friend for no reason to do with religion. He had no connection with any political organisation and committed suicide after the mosque incident.

More to the point, it’s important for the Islamic Central Council – and every Islamic body in every country – to do so.

They could make a useful start by telling obnoxious bigot brats to shake their teachers’ hands, as normal Swiss school-children do every day.

Some sensible Muslims condemned the brat in that story – did the Central Council?

They could, moreover, and should, disown  – condemn – the sort of thing we here in Indonesia hear from the state-funded Council of Indonesian ‘Scholars’ (MUI)….

It was MUI’s Deputy Chair, Ma’aruf, who kindly advised everyone that FGM is a ‘human right!’

And here’s another of their ‘scholars’ talking.

Syamsul Maarif,  General Secretary of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Jakarta

“If the act of adultery is by a married person, then stoning is the sentence, while if unmarried, then it’s whipping,” he said.

…and the Central Council would win wide approval, for sure, if they went on to request the authorities to round up and deport any and every cleric who refuses to denounce dangerous drivel about harming ‘apostates’ and killing cartoonists and other so-called ‘blasphemers.’

‘Islamophobia’ as a concept is a fairly recent invention coined by fanatics to intimidate critics of jihadist hate.

What decent Muslims should be doing is to take the steps I’ve outlined above, and brand as HERETICS those responsible for provoking anti-Muslim feelings by offensive sermons which incite violence.

Oh yeah – last but not least.

The ICC should repudiate any suggestion that solidarity with co-religionists in foreign parts should take precedence over allegiance to Switzerland.

    • That kind of sectarian supranationalism, so reminiscent of communist internationalism, affronts EVERY patriotic citizen – and not just in Switzerland!
