If Gordon had ordred Carson to seek a fresh mandate from the voters, a special election, ‘twould still be high-handed, but at least vaguely consonant with democratic practice.

Especially, since Carson’s exclusion comes on the eve of a key vote, a move to stop Mid and East Antrim council – where there’s a narrow balance of parties – complying with the appeasement apparatus of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
