Elections today in Austria, with the FPO patriot party polling well enough to merit re-inclusion in a government led, as is likely, by the ‘centre-right’ Sebastian Kurz, of whom we once had high hopes.

But media rumour ( aka hope!) is that he may instead join forces with the leftist Greens…

We shall see.

When the green and grizzled Austrian jackanapes narrowly defeated Hofer in presidential elections two years ago, Bellen‘s authoritarian leanings were already obvious.

And since then, he has revealed an excessive level of animosity towards one FPO notable in particular.

The Interior Minister, Herbert Kickl, showed real grit and patriotism throughout his term of office.

  Since the FPO left government, after its leader foolishly let himself be gulled by a conspiracy involving media lefts and a fake-Russian slapper, the uppity leftist president has declared that ‘he would not swear Kickl in as a minister again.’

Bellen is an enemy of democracy!

‘In response, Kickl said it is possible that he may receive a considerable number of preferential votes in the election. This would mean the president would have no choice but to swear him in, arguing that he must act in accordance with constitution, and “cannot act arbitrarily.”

But in fact Hofer has not said he’ll try to lead Austria out of the European Union. 

All he’s said is that he might seek to put that issue to a referendum. So these old-guard ogres are growling grimly at the mere prospect of democratic consultation!

Conservative can mean many things, but in most political contexts, we expect those who call themselves conservative to be committed to –

A patriotism and

B traditional values.

Van Bellen is almost oblivious to both A and B, so what kind of ‘conservatives’ rally to his red/green banner?

Unfortunately, we have seen this before.

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the ancien regime, uniting to obstruct the advance of ‘populists’  – aka national liberation.

In France, the reds and greens and all sorts are busily organising to get a collaborationist ‘conservative’ chosen as the ‘centre-right’s’ presidential candidate, in hopes of fending off Marine Le Pen’s rising challenge.
