The ruling party, curiously, did not call itself the Communist Party – it was the SED, the Socialist Unity Party, named when the KPD forced the SPD socialists into a ‘merger,’ in which the latter had no power at all.

Why the brief history lesson?

Because the word ‘Blockparteien’ has come back into common usage again, used by the common people to refer to the establishment parties which have re-imposed authoritarianism.
