…beautiful Stratford, Ontario, with its splendid Shakespearean Gardens and its river Avon, where I caught a cat-fish as a boy.

Like most Stratford citizens and those who have ever spent time there, I welcomed JB’s rise to fame and the spin-off benefits accruing to his home town.

Stratford has long had a reputation for civility and the common decency of the people who live there and up till now, the young star has not notably marred the little city’s good name.

Until now, as I say. Suddenly, he has lowered himself to the level of that gutter grub Beto O’Rourke..

RIP Merle Haggard

Today is a big day, the birthday of somebody very important to me, and we shall be chatting/skyping later, assuming PLN, Indonesia’s power company, doesn’t do a black-out on us.

But on opening the Washington Times this morning, I was saddened to see that my all-time fave country singer, Merle Haggard, died yesterday, on his 79th birthday…

… gone to chorus in God’s Grand Old Opry with other lost legends like Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, no doubt under the benign tutelage of Hank Williams.

I first heard Okie from Muskogee, his greatest hit, in the summer of 1969, in the bar of the Empire Hotel, in Stratford, Ontario.

The Empire, built and owned a hundred years or so ago by one of my great uncles, is also gone, and no doubt the big guy in the hard hat who was singing it then is long gone too.

But I liked the lyrics so much that I went to a record shop and bought the album. So many great songs, and he sang them with the same gusto he brought to his patriotism.

We have several pictures of HM on file, but I like this one best. 

I was born in the reign of the last King Emperor, but the only monarch I can recall from my childhood days was Queen Elizabeth,  for whom we all stood to attention when her anthem was played at the end of every movie show in the Avon or the Vogue.

Yeah, Stratford, Ontario, had two theatres in those halcyon days!

And she’s still there at Buck House, or rather today in Scotland, still working hard!

Amazing lady.

But I wonder how she feels, deep down, about what’s been done to her realms, over the past half century while she has maintained silence as a constitutional monarch has to, by the politicians.

I don’t suppose we’ll ever know.
