‘Treason?’ Tantowi’s Tel Aviv Trip Ignites Islamist Anger!

I used to enjoy the Country Roads show on Metro TV a few years ago here – even went along to one live session one night, since I lived near Metro at that time!

But I was mildly surprised when I learned its compere, and excellent C n W singer, Tantowi Yahya, was active in the Golkar Party, that vehicle created by the late President Suharto to legitimise his authoritarian rule.

Only this month did I hear he’s standing for Parliament in North/West Jakarta next time round,. albeit he currently represents a distant constituency, in Sumatra, if I’m not wrong.

We always had the impression, regardless of politics, that he was a pleasant, cheerful fellow, which may have made it inevitable that he incurred the displeasure of those miserable bigot ‘scholars’ in the MUI.

But that’s what’s duly happened, as Republika.co.id reports, because…wait for it…Tantowi, with other Indonesian MPs, went to ISRAEL and actually TALKED to Israeli MPs.

And according to the fanatics of MUI, this visit to the Zionist State of Israel should be investigated and acted upon… “They have committed treason against the nation of Indonesia.”

And Tantowi’s in his prime!

So says the increasingly interesting Tengku Zulkarnain, MUI’s Deputy Secretary General. Zul keeps popping up in the news these days – perhaps they’re trying to take the public’s attention away from the embarrassing extremist Ma’aruf.

Well, no, except that Tantowi’s departure did not have the blessing of Golkar and the House of Representatives.

Hardly the stuff damning evidence is made of. But Tengku ‘s got the bit between his shiny white teeth and rattles on wildly.

Their reasons, that they wanted to find a counterweight on data from the Palestinians, are just waffle.

And there are some folk in Papua who have words to say about Papua being annexed to Indonesia without a proper referendum having been held.
