Signora Pasta – Jakarta Enaaaak-issima!

Every now and then one’s plans for a weekend go awry, not necessarily in the wrong direction, but unpredictably.

Thus yesterday, I ended up playing Scrabble at the home of a former colleague whilst listening to a medley of Merle Haggard, Edith Piaf and sundry other songsters, all the while consuming various types of liquids that the local IslamoNazi prohibitionists would pour down the drain at the drop of a hat – or re-sell on the sly!

Our collective capacity might not have matched that of Jakarta’s drainage sytem, but even so…it seemed prudent to stop over rather than try to make it home – he dwells in the deepest south of the city, quite possibly over the border in Banten Province.

Having surfaced, with some reluctance, the host suggested lunch – nobody was fit for breakfast – at an Italian place he knew and liked.

So off we went, and were most delighted at the resto where we were taken.

Here’s the place!

  •  Signora Pasta is run by real Italians, one of whom soon came over to our table for a chat, an immensely friendly man who gave us free samples of his latest cake, which, coming after we’d eaten, I could only manage a bite of, enak (yummy) though it was!

A huge tuna salad and a sprawling (though thin) pizza, reminiscent of those I’ve devoured in trattoria from Tuscany to Otranto, were plenty to satisfy our noon-day appetites, and the bill, including a small Bintang and iced tea, came to around Rp.170,00.

The Indonesian head-waitress, like her Italian boss, is fluent in English, so we had several tri-lingual conversations.

It’s located in Cirendeu – the food is excellent,  and here’s the address, and other contact info. It’s not exactly spacious, so for evenings, booking ahead might be advisable.

  • As for the remainder of this weekend, I got dropped off mid-arvo in Blok M and was responsibly headng for the bus to come home, when I bumped into a bubbly personage named Rani, whom I’d not seen for months, so she persuaded me to the Pasaraya for a cool drink, and so the day wore on…
  • Pasaraya, Blok M, Jakarta
  • But I’m home now!
