As of this evening, Jakarta’s Gubernatorial election looks like a slam-dunk for the challengers, the Jokowi/Ahok ticket. The quick count on Metro TV…

Jokowi and Ahok’s win is common knowledge now, but still deserves a mention, as it’s surely a strong signal that Jakartans, 90% of whom are Muslim, are fundamentally a decent bunch, electing a sane Muslim Governor and a Christian Chinese Vice-Governor.

But the other juicy nugget in the headline, the last-minute dirty trick, may have upset a few of the nastier elements here.
I recounted how when I’d risen early on polling day to go into town, there inside my garden fence was a leaflet, a letter, no less, from some gutless creepoid who’d not signed his name.
Attached to the letter was the picture and comment I append above. It makes out that the winning pair are puppets, no less, of the controversial Parabowo, leader of the nationalist Gerindra party.
It seems everyone in our part of West Jakarta had an identical pre-dawn delivery, the obvious intent being that no riposte could be made.
But why reply to a sectarian sicko, whose only hint at his own identity was to say he was a Jakarta citzen of Central Java origin?
I quoted a few of its 21 ‘points,’ which may have been the cause that provoked its deletion.

Those included such helpful contributions to democratic debate as ‘the candidacy of Jokowi and Ahol is the ‘way in for Jews and Zionists to rule Indonesia.’
Another observed that ‘no nations in the world had a minority group ruling the majority group.’

I pondered the likelihood that this Jew-hating drivel would probably have boosted the vote for the candidates it so mindlessly slurred, and that friends like that, and the IslamoNazi FPI’s support, likely sealed Fauzi Bowo’s fate.

Had he disowned the white-shirt thugs’ endorsement, he might still not have won, but at least he’d have gone out with his campaign untainted in that respect.
